The distance between Gene Autry and Django Reinhardt never seemed more insignificant than on this unassuming collection of Western string-band tunes. O'Brien's relaxed and melodic guitar work is impressive without trying to impress as it ranges from old-time to jazz to cowboy to Tejano to gospel. The easy-swinging but intricate "Limehouse Blues," Reinhardt's "Swing 42," and the lilting "Big Sky Bounce" nod in a jazz direction; "Gypsy's Djewelry," played on a Djangoesque Selmer-style guitar, is an homage to one of O'Brien's key influences. "Dancing Mick from Louisville" is a delicate Irish-tinged solo guitar work. The delightful "There's an Old Spinning Wheel (In the Parlor)," learned from his Ma, and "I'll Be with You in Apple Blossom Time," with Chris O'Connell's vocals, are timeless traditionals. With fiddle, mandolin, and Dobro behind him, O'Brien lends them all a grace and precision on this outstanding debut record. --Marc Greilsamer

Enjoyable... but poor quality........2007-01-07
Got this, and a few others by the same producers, and LOVE it! -- except for the poor recording quality. The songs are upbeat, fun and perfect for an afternoon ride in the car. My little one likes to sing along! It also ends with classical music, that seems to coincide with my little one dosing off in his carseat. The only real problem... and, it's a real problem - as I have this CD and a few others by the same company... the volume greatly fluctuates between songs. I'm always having to turn the volume down or up to make the CD enjoyable. Very unfortunate... because I do enjoy the music.
Great CD!!!.......2006-05-23
My husband purchased this cd when our daughter was about 7 months old and she now is 13 months old. She absolutely loves the music!!! My 3 year-old niece loves the songs and playing sing-along! We play it for our daughter her all the time in the car when we run errands. She really enjoys the songs..we love the songs too!! I find it that playing this cd helps sooth her, specially during those times that she is being fussy. I'll definitely recommend it to any parent of infants and toddlers.
Fun fun fun CD!.......2005-10-13
This is a great ride-in-the-car CD. It's not really childish, but takes a few modern adult songs and makes them child-level. It also takes the classic child songs and spices them up a bit for even adults to enjoy. It ends the CD with a few classical songs to settle kids down for (hopefully) a short siesta. Definitely one we'll be listening to often.

Customer Reviews:
Very nice!.......2002-08-04
Very nice instrumental record (one piece has some artificial, stylized singing from Chris O'Connell of Asleep at the Wheel.)
Excellent range of styles as the other reviewer mentioned -- not repetitive like instrumental records often are. Traditional, waltz, Mexican, Irish, jazz. Six of the pieces were written by O'Brien. I don't like the two Django tracks and track #1 (sounds like Chet Atkins when he took himself too seriously) -- but I very much like the rest of the generous 14 tracks. Listened to it three times the first day! Helpful and interesting comments by O'Brien in the folder.
Well worth the money.
great guitar picking from a true gentleman of the west.......2000-09-20
If you appreciate western music (NOT country - big difference!), you'll love this one. Mr. O'Brien has played guitar on albums for Don Edwards, Red Steagall, RW Hampton, Sons of the San Joaquin and many other great western music artists, and I'm glad that he has been persuaded to record this CD. He really shines on this album, and his version of "On the Trail" from Lonesome Dove is worth the price of the CD by itself.
