Editorial Reviews
People
This felicitous tribute album celebrates the long career of the folksy Nashville singer-songwriter with the help of an impressive array of guest stars.... But the real highlights involve older stars.... The package generates two immediate reactions: "They don't make 'em like Hank any more" and "Too bad."

Faith No More are virtually impossible to categorize; they blend metal and rap elements in a mix that becomes seamless on The Real Thing, whose hit single, "Epic," is a perfect combination of these disparate genres. Other high points are the thrashy "Surprise! You're Dead!," an excellent cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs," the funk-layered-with-keyboards "Falling to Pieces," and the soft but spooky "Zombie Eaters." With the addition of vocalist Mike Patton, the band secured a highly talented frontman and skilled lyricist. The Real Thing is one of those rare albums that is impossible to quantify but astoundingly good. More accessible than the follow-up Angel Dust, it's also the first album new Faith No More listeners should get. --Genevieve Williams

1 out of 5 stars badly in need of re-mastering .......2007-06-19

The album itself is without question five stars. The one star is for the HORRIBLE sound quality.

4 out of 5 stars What is it?.......2007-01-10

Sure, this album has been out a long time, and it may even seem dated if you weren't born when it came out. But it's so damn good. I hadn't heard it in more than 10 years and just wanted to check it out again, to see if it really was as good as i remember. The short answer: you damn straight it's good. It's freaky-deaky! Heavy and soft, loud and quiet, chocolate and kiwis.
Go get it.

5 out of 5 stars Faith restored.......2006-12-24

In the midst of near band melt down and free for all, FNM fired their lead singer and brought in friend Mike Patton to pen lyrcis to their album that would be known as The Real Thing. Mixing Mike's love for vocal ranges and styles (everything from rapping to just rocking out like a true rock frontman) with the band's most accessible sound to date (and looking back now, THE most accessible period), FNM created a staple sound/album of the alternative scene, mixing some true music styles from rock to rap to a pre-acid like jazz sound. While some reviewers will try to sit there and say this is THE ALT ALBUM and Nirvana's Nevermind is a St. Anger for it's genre(?), FNM's The Real Thing is one of the cornerstones of the Alternative genre that evolved into Grunge (sorry but while TRT is great... Nevermind DID change an entire rock world by going back to the roots of rock that were long forgotten and bogged down by hair spray and power ballads, destorying what was left in the wake of GNR's AFD).
There is nothing much to say but Faith No More's The Real Thing is just a rocking album for the masses.

5 out of 5 stars It's still fun!.......2006-11-10

I LOVED Faith No More back in the day and owned most of their albums. My old cassette version of this got eaten in the player and I didn't replace it for the longest time. Finally got around to getting it on CD and realized how much I missed the band and the album! They were pretty groundbreaking for the time. Saw them in concert and loved them even more. I can't talk all technicla with you about styles, revolutionary sounds and whatnot, I just know what I like!

5 out of 5 stars One word, Genius........2006-09-11

This album is pure genius. The blend of music that this album has is simply out of this world. To here the totally different contrasts on the album, listen to the funk "Falling to Pieces" and to the metal and darkness of "The Real Thing". This truly a masterpiece of an album. If you like music, i recommend this album. One of the best of all time and CERTAINLY FOM's best.

Bo Bice, American Idol darling and Alabama babe magnet, had to have known he was taking a risk in naming his debut full-length The Real Thing. Up until now, those who weren't fans of the show and were introduced to Bice's heart-on-his-sleeve brand of southern rock through either his fall 2005 guest spot on Carlos Santana's All That I Am or his chart-topping turn on the single "Inside Your Heaven," also from 2005, may have been tempted to write him off as reality-show riffraff. The Real Thing--thanks in no small part to producer Clive Davis as well as Bice-boosters Richie Sambora, Jon Bon Jovi, Chad Kroeger (Nickelback), and Ben Moody (Evanescence)--redeems the hirsute, hard-charging rocker. Bice steps lively through a cavalcade of soaring guitars and top-drawer hooks, and he doesn't skimp on the belting--hear it on the full-flame lament "Nothing Without You" and also "Remember Me," an insistent rant sunk chest-deep in sincerity. If Bice sounds less earthy here than he did on the show--onstage he recalled the singer from the '60s band the Grass Roots to eerie effect at times--few will be disappointed. This is modern music with a Southern-man twist made irresistible by a bare-it-all guy who means it. The real thing, in other words. -Tammy La Gorce

2 out of 5 stars Let him sing his own songs, record company!.......2007-05-28

After listening to what Bo could do on "American Idol," especially the song he sung a capella, I decided to snatch up this album as soon as it hit the market. Egad! Where's the Bo I know?! I was certainly disappointed. After getting the album, I happened to watch an interview story where cameras followed Bo in the making of this thing. It was a terrible choice on the part of the studio/producer/record company/whoever's ultimate decision this was to not let Bo sing his own songs on this album. He's a great song-writer and can put his fantastic voice into his own songs with so much more heart than this album delivered. If you want just another album with so-so songs on it, go for it. If you want the real Bo, hope and pray that the undoubtedly stagnant sales from this album don't stop him from making a second album that demonstrates his true ability. I am not impressed with the square hole he got crammed into on this one.

2 out of 5 stars Huge Disappointment.......2007-05-16

Every song on this album was a huge disappointment. Each track sounded like so many other mediocre songs out there already. I thought Bo prided himself on being a little different during the competition, but this album was anything but. It was watered down even for watered down music.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing.......2007-03-29

Bo Bice should have won American Idol. We need a rocker idol. His first CD is a good one, his next one will be even better.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-03-05

Just LOVED Bo on American Idol and couldn't wait for a CD. While his voice is excellent, thought too many of the same, slow love songs on this CD. Was hoping for a more upbeat country rock type CD.

4 out of 5 stars Go Bo!.......2007-02-10

I was reluctant to purchace this CD, even though I loved Bo on American Idol, but I loved it. He has a great voice and the songs are well written. I wish I would've heard more of Bo's own songs, though. You're not wasting your money on this CD.

4 out of 5 stars didn't work for rehearsals.......2007-03-22

I used this CD to help me rehearse for the BIG production I was in, but it didn't match the libretto at all. I think there was one song on there that I could use.

3 out of 5 stars Big for folks doing the Musical.......2006-03-20

If you're getting this CD to help prepare for your school or community group doing the musical, there are a lot of changes from the CD to the book. Aside from finding the book in a new key and some chunks added/deleted, Here We Go Again and When You're Big aren't included anymore.

Overall, the music's a little trite, but there are some nice moments -- mostly the stuff sung by the female leads.

5 out of 5 stars It's Awesome, It's Amazing, It's BIG!!!!.......2006-01-22

My high school did "Big" my sophomore year, and oh my god, it was such a fun musical to do. I kind of forgot about it until my senior year, when I suddenly craved some of that music again. So I purchased this CD and I've been loving it since. They got rid of a couple of the songs and replaced them with others as the show progressed on Broadway, so I was suprised to hear new material (to me anyways), and for the most part, I actually enjoyed these original songs over their replacements that my production contained. This cast is phenomenal and the guy who plays Josh Baskin sounds so much like Tom Hanks at points, its crazy. It's a simple, yet a bit fantastic musical about growing up, and it's funny and romantic, and a lot of fun. I love all the songs, and it's a shame it didn't do too well on B-way. At least this recording will keep the music alive.

"This Isn't Me" is one of my favorite tracks, as it's a lot of fun and has a great beat, but suprisingly it was replaced with "Good Morning to Mom", which was only so-so. "I Want To Go Home" is a great ballad that Josh sings, and its simple, a bit funny, and the ending is the best, as its cute and sad. Another song they got rid of, "Here We Go Again", is a song Susan sings, and again, I like it alot. It has a quirky melody that I like. "Stars, Stars, Stars" is another great song, and is quite cute. One of the more popular songs. "Cross The Line" is the finale to Act I and is also very excellent and up beat, and makes you want to dance. "Stop, Time" is my favorite song on the album by far. Sung by Josh's mom, it is one of the more poignant moments of the show. Heartfelt, sad, and truly beautiful, it defiantely makes you appreciate your mom. Barbara Walsh sounds superb on this: she has a great voice. I love this one. "Dancing all the Time" is another good Susan song, and it leads into "I Want To Know" by Young Josh, which is another good ballad. "Coffee, Black" is another showstopper, fun ensemble song, and again, very comedic. "One Special Man" is Susan's ballad to Josh, and it is very beatiful. My only regret is that its only 2:21 so its a short one, and I just want her to start belting at the end, but no, its a quiet ending. Still, I love this one too. The finale is great too, and features an amazing duet between Josh and Susan. I love the harmonies they do.

All in all, this is a great album. Sample the songs and give it a try. This is a must have!!

4 out of 5 stars a lost gem.......2004-10-14

i saw this musical at the local high school in 2001 and was plesently suprised i of course saw the movie and the only thing i knew about this musical was it didnt stay long on broadway, so when i saw it was i shocked this is a delight cross the line still resenates in my head 5 years later.

1 out of 5 stars Ungodly awful.......2004-06-19

BEWARE. This musical is perhaps one of the five worst pieces of music I have ever experienced. I began to wonder if the composer was attempting to make the world's worst musical. Listen for yourself and enjoy the disjunct vocal lines, the desperate attempt at "fun music", and - worst of all - how the highlight of the entire show both dramatically and musically is the insipidly awful "Heart and Soul". Stick to the movie because this baby is horrendous.

Taj Mahal's been chasing the blues around the world for years, but rarely with the passion, energy, and clarity he brought to his first three albums. Taj Mahal, The Natch'l Blues and The Real Thing are the sound of the artist, who was born in 1942, defining himself and his music. On his self-titled 1967 debut, he not only honors the sound of the Delta masters with his driving National steel guitar and hard vocal shout, but ladles in elements of rock and country with the help of guitarists Ry Cooder and the late Jessie Ed Davis. This approach is reinforced and broadened by The Natch'l Blues. What's most striking is Mahal's way of making even the oldest themes sound as if they're part of a new era. Not just through the vigor of his playing--relentlessly propulsive, yet stripped down compared with the six-string ornamentations of the original masters of country blues--but through his singing, which possesses a knowing insouciance distinct to post-Woodstock counterculture hipsters. It's the voice of an informed young man who knows he's offering something deep to an equally hip and receptive audience.

Soon, Mahal turned his multicultural vision of the blues even further outward. The live 1971 set, The Real Thing, finds him still carrying the Mississippi torch, while adding overt elements of jazz and Afro-Caribbean music to its flame. But it's overreaching. His band sounds under-rehearsed, and the arrangements seem more like rough outlines. Nonetheless, these albums set the stage for Mahal's career. (For a condensed version, try the fine The Best of Taj Mahal.) Today, he continues to make fine fusion albums, like 1999's Kulanjan, with Malian kora master Toumani Diabate, and less exciting but still eclectic recordings with his Phantom Blues Band. --Ted Drozdowski

5 out of 5 stars A-MEN, brother reviewer..........2003-09-13

Yeah, man, the "official" reviewer just doesn't get it AT ALL. This is one of the best ROOTS recordings EVER - and I don't say that lightly. Remember...this is 1971...LIVE, a 2 LP recording, at the Fillmore...I mean, the Allman Brothers - WITH DUANE - did their recording that same year. Now, how many acts could have gotten away with playing a tune with nothing but a banjo and a TUBA, for cryin' out loud! ("Tom And Sally Drake")? Taj Mahal, that's who. Taj engages the audience as well as anyone ("Gimme some help...GIMME SOME! - You can do it...if you're jacked up to it...) and standouts here are the norm. "You're Goin' To Need Somebody On Your Bond" is the groover, with Taj 'gettin spiritual' with the blues, and doing the back and forth with the crowd. Also a highlight is "Ain't Gwine Whistle Dixie No Mo'", where every band member gets a piece of the action, and my spine tingles at the thought of John Simon groovin' on the piano, and John Hall doing a GREAT guitar solo, and ending, with Taj whistling over the many horns. No, if you don't get it, you don't get it...but I was 15...and I got it. This is Taj's moment in Time, Live - History, I believe it's called - and he grabs on and holds tight. Any fan of blues, jazz, roots, gospel, or African-American music History has to consider this a MUST HAVE CD. Period.

4 out of 5 stars Taj Always Had His Own Style.......2003-09-13

This is an excellent Taj Mahal CD. The album is fun and relaxing and must have been a great show to see. The quality of the music is great considering it was taken from a live performance. Although, a few times on the CD when Taj is talking between songs, the sound drops very quiet for a short time but quickly shoots back up to a good volume. The use of horns is a great change on this album and the other musicians on the stage sound great throughout. This is a good CD which will spice up any blues collection by providing a sound different from most other blues albums.

5 out of 5 stars This is it!.......2003-08-04

The "official" review doesn't take into account the power of this album as a whole. The chemistry is there, and this has the raw energy of the best blues. One of my favorite albums of all time.

5 out of 5 stars The Blues Rev Speaks.......2001-08-09

I completely wore out my original double LP album listening to The Real Thing. And "REAL" it is. This is my favorite Taj Mahal album and one of the top five of my favorite blues albums of all time, considering that my Blues LP and CD collection exceeds 350 albums. The ochestration of traditonal blues songs played with by a typical blues band coupled with the backing brass section of Mr. Howard Johnson and friends, is more powerful than a B-52 air raid. I'm going to purchase a second copy of this album for my archives because I know I'll wear out this CD before long.

The American psychedelic movement was bound to produce unexpected progeny--including the 1970s, which began as a mainstream attempt to absorb the "free love," recreational drug use, and sartorial eccentricities of the previous decade. But there were parallel repercussions elsewhere in the world, and nowhere was this phenomenon more fascinating than in West Africa. As LPs became cheaper and readily available, local musicians began to incorporate the fuzz and wah-wah guitar vamps, cheesy organ riffs, blatting saxes, and fat, funky bass lines of sixties R&B plus Santana-influenced Latin rhythms and the extended, destination-free guitar solos typical of the San Francisco sound. These were not emulated by rote but freely adapted by younger Africans, mostly students, whose own acoustic traditions had already been transformed by exposure to urban technology. The resulting amalgams, whether they evolved in Benin, Nigeria, Gambia, Cote d'Ivoire, or Mali, remain incredibly lively, funny, inventive, and surprising. --Christina Roden

4 out of 5 stars Neat Collection.......2006-12-16

I won't say this is the best "world music" CD I've ever heard, or even the best Luaka Bop production, but it is very good and very unusual. Let's say certainly well above average - as are the lengths of many of the songs. The music is hard to compare to anything else... maybe psychedelic reggae? Maybe not. Anyway, if you're broad-minded, musically speaking, chances are you'll like it, so buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Love it love it love it love it.......2006-09-21

This is a great album. I bought the first week it came out and still have not tired of it a year and a half later. Get it! You will put its songs on mix tapes and people will think you're awesome for having found these rare but outstanding songs!

4 out of 5 stars Funky and Original.......2006-08-10

This is a great CD. Even richer and more nuanced than I expected.

5 out of 5 stars Real Music.......2006-04-19

This is the best 12 song compilation cd I've ever experienced in my life. Anyone who votes anything less than 5 star is obviously a cheap wad or doesn't know anything about music.

5 out of 5 stars Funky For the Money.......2005-10-19

If you like funk, or rock, or jazz, or just love good music you will like this CD. It is like a mix between James Brown and Jimi Hendrix. Every song is amazing and they are all different. Sure you may not understand the language, but funk is international. Hands down worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars Sheri Petta - who would a thunk?.......2007-02-17

I heard a cut from Sheri Petta and enjoyed it so I ordered her only album and have played it over and over. She is gifted with a silky smooth syrupy voice - a torch singer with soul and perfect pitch - a real find.

A superb CD. Silky voiced, smooth renditions of classic numbers excellently produced with very professional backing. Well worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Fresh New Voice.......2006-01-22

Sherry Petta's music resonates with a fresh new sound. Her voice is clear and clean...reminds me of listening to jazz in a hot club, but without any smoky haze... a contemporary sound for today. I have given Sherry's CD as a gift to many friends and they all enjoy listening to it over and over again. The lilt in Sherry's voice is just charming. Buy this CD today for hours of listening pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Magical!.......2006-01-18

You must buy this CD. While visiting Arizona recently, I heard a song from this CD on the radio. I figured the singer was some famous person, and then I heard the DJ say it was from an "upcoming star". Well he was right. This woman can sing! All of the songs put you in a calm, relaxing, and "feel good" state of mind. In short, Sherry Petta's music is magical! I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars A primer for the forgotten 70's powerhouse.......2003-05-12

Cheryl Lynn remains one for the ages: a voice that transcended her material and the short time that she was in the limelight. This "Sony Special Products" disc doesn't even scrape the surface of the explosive vocalist. Culled from her 1978 debut album (6 cuts), 1980's "In Love" (2 tracks), the title cut from 1984's "Preppie", and "It's Gonna Be Right from 1985 (1 cut), there are still some glaring omissions, specifically her duet with Luther Vandross ("If This World Were Mine") and her R & B smash "Encore".

If one is just interested in a few choice Lynn samples, then this is the one to have. However, the true fan would be best to invest in "Got to Be Real: The Best of Cheryl Lynn".

5 out of 5 stars A Premiere Album For A Diva Of Such Magnitude.......2006-05-17

Angela Winbush by far is one of the most underrated singer/songwriter/producer of our time. Just when music was in a state of flux between gangsta rap and hip hop, Angela gave us an album of pop/ r&b sensibilities in "The Real Thing". Produced by her and executive produced by husband of the moment
Ronald Isley. Every song is top notch. Slinky, sexy and smooth. Everything from The Real Thing to I'll Never Be The Same is hot. Menage A Trois is a song about threesomes which she is not agreeing with. Why have three when you can have her?
I Learned To Respect The Power Of Love is a sensual track about the joys and pains of love. To me, I think Stephanie's version is a way lot better than hers due to the instrumentation. Angela's is wholesome while Stephanie's is more spiritually based. Overall, this is a dime album. Get it! Grade: A+++++

5 out of 5 stars My FAVE LP From Angie!.......2003-05-28

{{I've Learned to Respect (The Power of Love)}}

That song have a very spiritual meaning, really moving too!

Angela Winbush wrote that song in 1976 for Alton McClain & Destiny and then it was topped in the charts in 1986 by Stephanie Mills. Finaly, Angie sang it in her 1989 release Its The Real Thing.

Personaly, I can't figure out which one is the betta version! Stephanie or Angela? I saw both ladies on the Apollo back in 2000 and they broke down while pre4ming that #. They tore the roof and people of all ages were crying after they finished the song.

I heard Angela's version last night and I noticed that while singing that tune at the end she hollered "Stephanie, let me tell ya about that power!" like both ladies have witnessed the same pain and only BOTH know what went down in their struggles.

Very Well produced LP and the lyrics are jawdropping! "Precious" is my FAVE jame from there.

I have yet to understand why the wife of superstar Ronald Isley has not received her due recognition. As a songwriter, she is in a class by herself and her distinctive voice is easily recognizable to all familiar with it. This late 80's gem is worth the purchase. The exemplary cuts are "Lay Your Troubles Down," performed with husband Isley, "Ménage a Trois," and the hit "I've Learned to Respect (the Power of Love)."

C'mon, folks, the title says it all. Y'can't get "realer" than this.
