Opera for Aficianados as well as Newbies.......2007-06-11
If you are looking for peaceful, beautiful music this is for you. It is a delightful mix of some of opera's most memorable moments. Long time opera fans will be familiar with most of the arias and newcomers to opera will recognize music that has become identified with movies and commercials.
superb! .......2007-05-12
If you love wonderful operatic moments then this cd is a great buy for all of the wonderful and spectacular music on it. You get two cds for the price of one great opera cd, and all of the talented singers that were taken and put on these tracks do definate justice to all of the composers listed. A great cd to add to your collection especially if you are an aspiring singer or a student in music. Absolutely Fantastic!
beatiful music.......2007-02-23
former reviews are no exaggeration, this is the most beautiful music I have come across. I have many opera CDs but this is one I never tire of.

A Major Document of an Incredible Oeuvre..........2007-03-12
.
Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.
DGG's sound is excellent.
This set is a remarkable document of art.

Customer Reviews:
Highly enjoyable.......2001-06-30
This is a very enjoyable album performed by one of the best American choral ensembles. All the selections are excellent, and well recorded. My 4-star score is because of Shaw's score of the Pilgrim's chorus from Tannhauser; one of most moving choral works ever written. Shaw has the male chorus sing the straight melody through most of it, with what I'd describe as a glee club sound. While wonderfully sung with remarkable control, it lacks (until near the end) the power I've heard in other performances using greater range of choral harmonies available from such a wonderful ensemble. The "Regina Coeli" is truly a gorgeous performance.
Don't know what they're singing, but I like it!.......2000-05-10
I'm not a big opera fan - generally I'm glad when the fat lady sings! But, I love classical music, and a lot of the MUSIC of opera. That said, I really enjoy this disc!
The Atlanta Symphony and Chorus, under the baton of the late, great Robert Shaw, enjoy a well-deserved reputation as one of the preeminent choral organizations. It's just wonderful to hear such a large choir with such command of dynamics - they can shake the room, and they can whisper. The TELARC recording is up to the usual excellent quality - they have captured those dynamics.
I purchased this disc for one reason - because it has Wagner's "Pilgrim's Chorus." And it's magnificent - what a transcendent piece of music! Other selections range from the obscure-but-lovely, to the melodies that have been whistled by everyone at one time or another. Personal favorites include Moussorgsky's "Coronation Scene" from _Boris Godunov_, Bizet's "Les voici" from _Carmen_, and the awe-inspiring "Regina Coeli" from Mascagni's _Cavalleria Rusticana_. There are definitely no "dud" tracks in this collection. It will surely be appreciated by the opera and choral buff, but also by rubes like me, who like the music but don't have a clue what all those foreigners are carrying on about! Know what I mean, Vern?

Customer Reviews:
A missable item among the riches of the Schwarzkopf catalog.......2006-03-20
Since this double-CD is long out of print, I suppose there's not much value in criticizing it in detail. EMI has released dozens of lieder and opera recordings with their preeminent star, including great live concerts from Salzburg with Gerald Moore from this period in the mid-Fifties.
Compared to Moore and Edwin Fischer, by far her best accompanist, George Reeves is stiff and unimaginative, not to mention that the paino sounds thin and clattery. Schwarzkopf recorded every song here in at least one and often multiple versions that are much better. Unless you want a souvenir of Schwarzkopf live in New York, this set is a miss.
A complete Schwarzkopf lieder recital........2003-09-07
Lieder recitals featured prominently in the career of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. Not many were recorded in their entirety, however, announced encores and all, or approved for issue. This double CD offers an opportunity to hear her in her prime, recorded in Carnegie Hall, New York, 25th November 1956.
With George Reeves, who brings vast experience and plenty of personality to the piano accompanying, Schwarzkopf delivers a succession of her favorite items, none too demanding (apart from an operatic aria) and all enthusiastically applauded by the audience. One or two of the Schubert strophic songs are given interesting dynamic "interpretative" presentations, not attempted in her studio recorded versions. After a bracket of Mozart lieder, Schwarzkopf announces that she has received many requests for the inclusion of an operatic aria. She provides one of Fjordiligi's arias from "Cosi fan tutte", coping wonderfully well with its many difficulties.
No allowances need be made for "on location", mono recording. The sound is astonishingly realistic, and the total duration is 103 minutes.

An encyclopedic collection of Schubert songs, Volume 2.......2005-10-26
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (born 1925) is considered by many to be the foremost authority on Schubert Lieder for the male voice in our time. He likely made more recordings of this area of music than any other singer, having not only this 9 disc set, but another 9 disc set (Volume 1) for DG, the three complete song cycles: "Schwanengesang", "Die Schone Mullerin" and "Winterreise" (DG, Volume 3 of Fischer-Dieskau's Lieder edition), plus a 6 disc set of Schubert Lieder for EMI, also with Gerald Moore. Figure in the earlier recordings from the late 1940s, and live recitals on such labels as Orfeo, and there are ALOT of Fischer-Dieskau Schubert lieder recordings available.
Critics of vocal recitals and lieder may have other opinions, but I think this is as fine a collection as any. I keep this, like Volume 1, to be able to refer to a given song, not to listen to disc after disc of Schubert Lieder in one sitting, even though all are delightful works. Fischer-Dieskau manages to make Schubert's simple, strophic songs sound like great masterpieces, perhaps greater than they really are. And pianist Gerald Moore is an excellent partner: Moore and Fischer-Dieskau work as one, in perfect sync.
Keep in mind these are all songs for male voice, and not the complete Schubert songs. DG should be commended for releasing these recordings on CD and keeping them before the public. If you are really a Schubert completist, consider also the complete Hyperion Schubert Edition, with Graham Johnson, piano, and singers such as Lucia Popp, Peter Schreier, Janet Baker, Stephen Varcoe, Maragaret Price, Ian Bostridge, Martyn Hill singing all the 700+ songs Schubert composed in his short lifetime (1797-1828; Schubert's first lieder were composed about 1815). (The Hyperion Schubert edition is available in Great Britain for about $250 for 40 discs, if you cannot find it in the US).
For further comment, please see my remarks for DG, Volume 1 of Schubert Lieder by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
Make up your mind to this journey........2001-02-07
Since this set of Schubert lieder (3 boxes, 21 cds in all) has become a legedary classic, I don't think I should make any comment. But just a suggestion to those who want to embark on these discs. Make up your mind on this journey. On facing such a tome record arranged and sung chronically, it's useless and wrong only to listen to some famous lieder or discs or just listen randomly. You should spare a long period of time, begin by listening from the very first disc to the last disc. And, during the period do not listen to any lied of other composers. Then gradually, lied by lied, disc by disc, you will forget this is Fischer-Diskau and Moore---This is a real life of a great soul! You are really touching and breathing with a great soul! Feel the sound of schubert, feel his struggle, his emotion, his feeling, his hate and love. Feel how those youthful spontaneous and raw lieder gradually developed into fully ripened masterpieces. Such wonderful experience belongs only to really patient listeners.
It took me about 2 full weeks to listen to the whole 21 discs. Fischer-Diskau and Moore chose the "Abschied(Farewell)" to be the last lieder read (this song happened to be the only lied of Schubert to be recite with piano accompaniment, and which was composed during his final years). Thus the whole hundreds of lieder, or the whole life of Schubert, ended on this lied, farewell to the earth. It began with "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde (Goodbye, you beautiful Earth)". I will forever remember when I finally came into this lied, on the first words of Diskau's "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde" I trembled and cried from the very first note to the last note. My god, it's untouchable granduer.

This disc launches one of the great projects in the history of recording: the complete songs of Schubert, the world's greatest songwriter. Hyperion was lucky that they caught Janet Baker--a renowned Schubert singer--just at the end of her distinguished career, but still in fine voice. Graham Johnson, pianist and guiding spirit behind the whole project, has given her excellent material to work with: songs to texts by Schiller and Goethe. An auspicious beginning to a magnificent voyage of discovery. --David Hurwitz

The Mack Daddy of Musical Series Begin here..........2006-06-27
'The Hyperion Schubert Edition, Complete Songs, Volume 1' sung by mezzo-soprano Dame Janet Baker, accompanied by pianist, Graham Johnson is, to my ear, much more satisfying than the several 'selected' Schubert collections by contemporary divas such as Renee Fleming and Anne Sophie von Otter.
Since I am a rank amateur in music appreciation, I give you my visceral impressions, and some attempt at why I think these may work for you. This recording is comprised of no more than 19 out of the over 600 Lieder composed by Franz Schubert, but they are joined by the fact that they are all based on poems by two of Germany's greatest poets (up to Schubert's time), Goethe and Schiller. Thus, there is a great uniformity in both the music and the lyrics. As someone who own's over half of this 32 CD series, I recommend this as a sample for anyone who simply wishes to see if they are interested. It may not have as much resonance as the last recordings which do Schubert's famous song cycles such as 'Die Schoene Mullerin', but they are very, very pretty, and Dame Janet certainly does them justice.
A worthy start to a very special series........2001-08-02
The editorial comment reflects the strong recommendation given to this CD in the "Penguin Guide to Compact Discs". I add my own recommendation also, not only for this CD but for the whole project which it initiates, the plan to provide a truly complete survey of Schubert's song output.
The accompanist and moving spirit throughout is Graham Johnson. In his notes, he mentions inheriting a ten-volume Schubert edition, full of pencil markings, from legendary accompanist Gerald Moore. The older accompanist, collectors will remember, made a memorable series of Schubert lieder recordings with Dame Janet Baker. Well here is Dame Janet in her mid-fifties but still in vocal splendour, together with the younger accompanist, recorded in 1987.
One of the principles of this huge recording project is to match singers with songs. Anyone privileged to attend a recital by Dame Janet, a tall statuesque figure, will once again enjoy the experience of sharing music that seems to suit her perfectly. In "An den Mond", a song requiring a vocal range of almost two octaves, Dame Janet's lower register is used with remarkable dramatic power.
There is, moreover, the miracle of Schubert's genius, illuminating the texts of Goethe, Schiller and other of the German poets. A minor miracle is that such illumination was possible at such a young age. The 17-year-old Schubert begins, for example, the song "Nähe des Geliebten" with a swelling crescendo which accompanist and singer share, wonderfully well-contrived to suggest urgency. Other examples could be provided, but I hope this is enough to recommend this CD, if not the whole edition of 37 or more, to music lovers everywhere.

below average voice and interpretation; admirable program.......1999-09-29
Pilgrim's voice is without expression or feeling, and unfortunately, is with excessive and unstable vibrato. The selections are wide-ranged and interesting. The program has great potential as a comprehensive resource, but it's vocal performance lacks talent, technique, and interpretation.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent performer.......2007-03-09
This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
I'm fascinating.
A unique project.......2006-11-23
Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.
Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12
First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.
Definative.......2005-07-23
Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!
Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Voice From The Past.......2006-07-27
This two-disc set gives a good overview of the great Russian Bass singer. It has a total of 36 selections, and covers the years 1911 to 1936.
With a voice of tremendous range and power, Chaliapin could also sing softly and with feeling. A very flexible instrument that comes through the old recording technology of the 78 record era. A good example of the pure physical gifts of his voice is 'Farlaf's Rondo' by Glinka. A 'patter' song, with words and syllables sung rapidly and seemingly without taking a breath. As if the performance wasn't difficult enough, Chaliapin speeds up the tempo at the ending of the rondo! It shows the breath control he had, and while the singer seems to be none of the worst for wear, I was left breathless just listening!
Two selections, Boris' Monologue from 'Boris Godounov' and 'Song of The Flea', by Mussorgsky, are represented by two different performances. This gives a good idea of the breadth of Chaliapin's art, as each performance of the same work is full of nuance and artistry. It is hard for me to pick which performance I like best. As with any great artist, each time a work is performed it is not just a repitition, but a unique recreation.
The transfers naturally have much surface noise, as all are from the 78 rpm record era. I have most of these recordings on transfers to LP's and the noise is much more apparant than on the CD transfers. With older recordings such as these, any transfers and 'cleaning up' of the sound can only go so far. If too much of the noise from the originals is 'cleaned up', the recording can lose presence. Whomever engineered the transfers to CD has hit a happy middle ground. The background noise is still there, but not so annoying as on LP, while the sound of the actual music and Chaliapin's voice seems much more alive.
What I have read about Chaliapin says that he was not only a great singer, but a great actor also. The two do not always go together, for a great voice in opera can make up for a lack of acting ability. To have both talents rolled into one is rare. Contemporary accounts of Chaliapin's operatic performances comment as much on his acting as his singing. There arevideos of his film performance in Ibert's Don Quichotte, which I want to see when I have the chance.
If you're passion is the human voice, you must hear Chaliapin. It is not possible to say he or anyone else was the best. But these recordings show he was a consummate artist, and are well worth exploring.
Recommended.
Chaliapin - Prima Voce.......2006-03-18
The recordings are old but the only way one can hear a legend!
The selections are excellent and the quality is as one would expect from this vintage recording.
I enjoy going back to hear these voices and this is the only way to understand the history
