Nitpick about soloing "in the style of"..........2007-05-31
I just thought I'd add a "caveat emptor" for readers who might take the phrase "in the style of" in the review below too literally.
To my mind, playing guitar "in the style of" someone means playing the "Hot Rod Lincoln" solo as that person would (obviously, this would just be a guess on Kirchen's part, but would be very interesting nonetheless).
What REALLY happens on the song is Kirchen (is it pronounced KER-chin or KEER-k'n?) plays "snippets" or short riffs from songs made famous by the artists mentioned--which is not quite the same thing as playing "in the style of."
IOW, instead of pretending to be Ritchie Blackmore or Eric Clapton or... (etc.) playing the solo to Hot Rod Lincoln, Kirchen plays some signature riffs for which those gents are famous (the riffs from "Smoke on the Water", "Sunshine of your Love" etc.).
My biggest complaint is that he left out Rory Gallagher, the best guitarist ever.
Nevertheless, I still find the CD, and that song in particular, highly entertaining and do not at all regret buying it. In fact, I'm thinking about getting Kirchen's "King of Dieselbilly" recording.
A dream team: Bill Kirchen joining forces with Dwight Yoakam!
Great stuff; even better REALLY live.......2006-03-07
If you're a Commander Cody fan and you have all the Cody/Airmen stuff you can find, then get over to the "K" aisle and start picking up on Bill Kirchen.
"Womb to the Tomb" is a neat little "magic reality truck" song.
All of the Cody classics covered here are, as one would expect, excellent -- particularly "Hot Rod Lincoln", which runs eight minutes, and has a middle section wherein Bill demonstrates he can make his Telecaster sound like anything, including Jimi Hendrix's left-handed Strat. (I caught his live show shortly after i bought this album, and the Really Live "Lincoln" ran more like fifteen minutes, with even more messing around, including longer "tribute" segments, including most of a verse of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me").
I could have stood another couple of tracks off the Cody album "Let's Rock", particularly "Rockabilly Funeral" (which was part of the live gig i caught) and "The Home of Rock'n'Roll" (Which wasn't) -- but hey -- what's here is great.
If you like rockabilly or Western Swing; if you like Commander Cody (duh), Asleep at the Wheel or Jason & the Scorchers you probably ought to have this CD.
The First Four Tracks Alone..........2004-12-06
The first four tracks along are worth the price of admission. With Track 4, "Hot Rod Lincoln", you will understand why Bill Kirchen is known as a "Master of the Telecaster". It wasn't until my middle age that I began to understand the importance of "Live Music". Bill Kirchen is an actual *musician* who sounds as good on the road as he does in the studio, sometimes better. "Rockin' over China" and "The Finger" are good finishers for this set of excellent live music.
I would definitely agree with the previous reviewers. This CD is a keeper.
If you enjoy the genre of "Swamp Rock/DieselBilly/Bang&Twang" then is is an album for your collection.
top notch.......2001-08-17
A truly fine performance by a master. I enjoyed the songs, humor and variety. The portion where he imitates a couple dozen other guitar greats is worth the price alone. Sound quality of disc is very good.
THIS CD IS JUST TOO MUCH FUN!.......2001-03-21
If you're gonna throw a party, first ya need the beer, then comes the entertainment. And that would be the dancing girls and this Bill Kirchen "Hot Rod Lincoln Live" cd. If your a fan of Commander Cody, I promise you'll love this. If you've never heard of the ole Commander, think "Hot Rod Lincoln". And you really haven't heard "Hot Rod Lincoln" till you've heard this funky 8 minute version that's played on the same "Coal Burning" guitar that was used on the original tune from 1971. This new version is soooo good that you'll press track 4 over and over again until your dancing feet wear out. I don't think there has ever been anybody around who has as deep of a twangy guitar sound as Bill Kirchen. Not even Duane Eddy, who is just one of the many musicians that Kirchen playfully mimics on Hot Rod Lincoln. But this isn't the only great song on here. Kirchen throws in a couple Commander Cody songs from the good old days. "Lookin at the world through a windshield", and one of my favorites "too much fun". BIll Kirchen isn't any novelty act though. This guy writes great original songs like "secrets of love", "swing fever" and a great rockin tune "rockin' over China". I highly recommend running out and getting this before your next party. You'll definitly want to have this cd handy, just in case the beer runs out.

Purrfect for swing dancing..........2003-12-12
I used to swing dance to these guys all the time. I love this retro swing music(& I'm only 14 years old). This music is sort of a mix of rockabilly, swing ,and western swing. F-U-N & very

Rockabilly at it's BEST!.......2000-04-20
Local S.D. Rockabilly band with a Stray Cat/Cochran style. These guys are simply amazing. Being a huge rockabilly fan it's rare to come across a band that can play their instruments as well as theese guys do and I can't wait till they do it again!

HRL, a must get for Rockabilly fans........2003-07-31
The Boulevard, very first Hot Rod Lincoln CD and possibly their greatest. It has a fine remix of Summertime Blues, Sleepwalk and many other great songs, not to mention it is a total mood booster. Unfortunately, it's a very rare CD and not often found in stores ANYWHERE, so Amazon is giving off a great deal for a great CD. Check it out, you'll fall in love with it.
Their first, their best.......2002-03-13
This is a must own for all RAB fans. This is HRL's very first CD and I think it is their best. Great mixture of original songs and classic rockabillys. Don't miss them if you happen to be in San Diego. This CD is hard to find, if you happen to see one... grab it.
Cars + Women + Booze= Rockabilly.......1999-09-03
This is as powerful a rockabilly act as SoCal has ever produced. If you havent heard of these guys, get this record, get schooled. This is what rockabilly is all about -No Khakis allowed

Customer Reviews:
SEE THEM LIVE!!!.......2002-03-13
As much as I love the band, this CD does not live up to Boulevard and Blue Cafe's caliber. It took them 4 years to follow up on Blue Cafe but it's mostly mediocre, middle of the road rockabilly tunes that they came up with. It's best to experience HRL live in San Diego or in RAB fairs, hootenannies and car shows. But if you're a die-hard... it's still worth owning.
