The great irony of John Barry's Academy Award-winning score for Out of Africa (which also took the Oscar as Best Picture) is that it almost never was; director Sydney Pollack had originally envisioned the film with native African music, going as far as laying the indigenous score down as he was editing. But the weight of John Barry's arguments--not to mention his considerable track record and composing gifts--held sway, and the composer delivered on his intent: a lush, romantic masterpiece for the ages. --Jerry McCulley

Out of Africa is a CD with beautiful music. When I listen to it, I imagine myself in the nature of Africa. You will enjoy it!

CD has missing track.......2006-12-03

John Barry's compositions are pleasantly sweeping. There's nothing wrong with this album, just not really enough to recommend it.

I was puzzled to learn that some time between my buying the LP record and the issuing of this CD, the track "The Music of Goodbye (love theme from Out of Africa)" was omitted. It's not that this song, sung by Melissa Manchester, is a must-have; it's more that it's sneaky to leave off tracks when you reissue a soundtrack in another format.

I absolutely love the music from Out of Africa, but I do not recommend this CD at all. The sound quality is so poor that I could only bear listening to it once.

Highly recommended for those who love instrumental music. A lot of beautiful flute, strings and some piano and harp. Very contemplative and hauntingly beautiful music.

This is by far the best CD in the Baby Einstein collection--it will put your toddler in hyperactive playful mode and exhaust you as you try to keep up. But for today's overweight, tv- and game- addicted children, this is great!

This CD is a lot of fun. The music is bubbly and upbeat and makes you want to get up and dance or just jump around. It's a great way to spend some play time with your kids. And the classical music exposure is a bonus.

Synthesized dreck.......2005-08-13

Why did the producers use synthesizers for this music? It's awful. It's possible to hook kids on classical music using the actual instruments written for it - that's how I got hooked. That's what Mel Blanc and Disney did in their cartoons, Bugs Bunny and Fantasia. I do NOT recommend this CD to anyone. It was a shower gift. If you are not familiar with classical music, then I recommend "Baby Needs Beethoven", which is a collection of music using real instruments (albeit shortened - no full length symphonies here).

To listen to Ray Wylie Hubbard's Snake Farm is to enter an eerie netherworld populated by dark and fascinating characters, some of whom are creepy enough to give you the shivers. The sandpaper-voiced Hubbard, a Texas songwriting legend, works a primal, greasy groove with these bluesy portraits, starting with Ramona, the dancing, tattooed reptile-house worker of the unforgettable title track. "Snake Farm" hypnotically mixes slithering images of sex, fear, revulsion, and humor, especially when Hubbard lets out a shimmering and menacing shudder of disgust. ("Snake farm / It just sounds nasty / Snake farm / Purty much is.") Guitar gunslinger Seth James sharpens the fine point on the stiletto that helps make these songs so lethal, but throughout, Hubbard strives for a tone of decadent elegance, whether evoking polecat love or the sideshow thievery of "Rabbit" ("There's two kinds of people in the world / The day people and the night people / It's the night people's job / To get the day people's money"). Produced by the masterful Gurf Morlix, who keeps things lean, foreboding, and roadhouse rough, the album sounds as if it were recorded in a room lit only by a naked 90-watt bulb--the perfect atmosphere in which to conjure songs of sin, deceit, and subterranean shenanigans. By record's end, redemption appears in a gonzo-ized telling of the Christ tale ("Resurrection"). But the Devil holds center stage until then, particularly on "The Way of the Fallen," inspired by Dante's Inferno, and on the Joseph Campbell mythology of "Wild Gods of Mexico," which involves a graphic canine sacrifice. Like Reservoir Dogs, the Quentin Tarantino classic Hubbard references in another humorous--if complex--example of women, sex, and revulsion, Snake Farm is not for the faint of heart. But fans of lowlife chic and exemplary Texas songwriting should lap this up quicker than cold longnecks and hot chicken-fried steak. --Alanna Nash

We heard the title cut on Tucson's KXCI, and had to get the album. We picked it up from our P.O. box today and put it right in the CD player on our way to exercise, and listened to it as went went about our errands afterwards. It's modern blues, with that little edge to it, and just fun to listen to. If you're into analyzing songs, these can certainly be said to speak to the modern angst and all, like blues are supposed to. The lyrics (which are printed out) are simple, strange, and can, I think, be as Meaningful as you want 'em to be. Hubbard's voice has a sort of limited range, but it's a great voice, distinctive, full of personality and subtle expression, and easy on the ears at the same time it commands attention. It's gonna be years before we even -begin- to tire of this album, and we're already raving about it to our friends.

this is what early zz top would have sounded like had they leaned toward alt-country rather than rock. mr hubbard plays superb electric guitar and is a fine songwriter to boot. down and dirty, gritty and greasy, blues and country and rock & roll. choosen as one of the 50 best albums of 2006 by no depression magazine, i recommend this to swamp-rockers everywhere.

Best CD of 2007.......2007-03-08

Ray Wylie Hubbard just gets better with age. This album blends his musical styles of the past 30 years into his best work yet. The music and lyrics are both very satisfying and I know I'll play this cd until it disintegrates.

Director Sam Mendes's much-anticipated follow-up to his Academy Award ^®-winning American Beauty found him exploring the period gangster film--but with a moral fiber and undercurrent of family tragedy familiar from his Oscar ^® triumph. After losing my Father back in October, I began reaching for things that reminded me of him. One of the things I reached for was the score for the Road to Perdition. Although my Father was gravely ill the day I took him to see the film, it ended up being a day not soon forgotten. I am listening to the soundtrack as I write this review. Fathers and Sons.

Hauntingly Wonderful.......2006-12-18

This soundtrack is amazing. Like Shawshank Redemption, Newman's music colors the film, reveals character, and highlights themes. I've listened to this soundtrack dozens of times, and I still love it. From the mournful "Piano Duet" to the driving "Lexington Hotel", this is a great purchase regardless of whether or not you liked the movie.

Tells The Story.......2006-04-12

Wonderful soundtrack. If you've seen the movie, you can listen to these tracks and almost guess what or who they are written for in the script. I think Thomas Newman is the drummer of their composer family, because almost all of his music has the underlying ryhthms that make you tap to the beat (even though this is classically orchestrated music), with music that perfectly breathes the air of the times it was written for.

I own both the movie and the score, and I have to tell you, this film would not be half of what it is without this gorgeous, mellow, and sometimes violent and aggressive score. It really carries the film, and I think it even surpasses it some. Newman really outdid himself this time!

Real Gangstas, Role Models, and Elvis Presley.......2004-06-10

This disc (as well as its companion, "Vol. 2: Dont'cha Hear Poor Mother Calling?") is perhaps some of the most beautiful and honest recordings of human expression you'll ever hear. Modern music has nothing on this stuff; it's the real deal. This is music that was created to get you through the day; not to sell records or to score chicks. This is as anti-commercial, and therefore, as antiestablishment as you can get. Truly alternative. And it is, in a word, spellbinding.
The greatest beauty of, not only the songs, but culture that spawned them and the men who sang them as well, is the burning human spirit that inhabits each and every track on this record. Nowhere is there a mention of giving up or losing hope. These songs are optimistic in the the purest sense and prideful in the best way. One can't help but wonder how - in a place where you could get six months on the chain gang for standing on a street corner, or five years for stealing a loaf of bread - these men managed to remain so hopeful? How could they stay so proud and sing so true, with so much life, while they were being worked to death every day, from dawn until dusk, under the blazing, hot sun with nothing but a little bread and water to keep them going? These men must have had an amazing inner strength and a strong system of values to get through it. Or, if not that, at they very least, they had to have possessed an unimaginable amount of pride and dignity in themselves to not to be broken down by their captors and the brutal Jim Crow penal system under which they were railroaded.
Thinking of that and listening to this disc, I was reminded of something I heard Wynton Marsalis say in an interview with David Frost. When asked what he thought of Rap music, Wynton said that, "Rap, because of it's sense of nihilism, represents the ultimate triumph of the white man over the black man..." Nowhere, he claimed, in the history of African-American creative expression do you find that sense of nihilism that you do in Rock & Roll. That was something that found its way into black culture after Elvis took off. So if Rock music was, and still is, a white manifestation of the Blues and R&B with a Dionysian sense of self-destruction, then the rebellious posturing and devil-may-care swagger of today's gun-toting "Gangsta" archetype is something that was adopted from white culture. Does this sound far fetched? Not if one looks at white popular culture from the fifties. Take, for example, "Rebel Without a Cause" or "The Wild One" where disenfranchised white kids, juiced up on hormones, drag race down the road, not at all concerned that somebody might crash or fly off a cliff. Where do these ideas play out in pre-fifties African-American culture? They don't. Because they don't exist. Could you ever imagine Duke Ellington, in his top hat and tails, kicking over his piano bench the way Jerry Lee Lewis did on the Steve Allen Show? Never in a million years. This sense of nihilism was introduced into the mix by white guys like James Dean, Marlon Brando, Gene Vincent, and Eddie Cochran; it was later elevated to a fine art by the likes of Keith Richards, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison before it was co-opted by latter day Rap performers.
To be sure, there is no sense of nihilism on this disc. And for that reason, the singers on "Murderous Home" (and "Dont'cha Hear Poor Mother Calling?") should be held up as role models to countless disenfranchised young people out there who have no faith in the system. The men here didn't let the system get the better of them; they didn't let the institution turn them sour; they didn't let the institution turn them on themselves. The guys on this disc are the original "Gangstas." True rebels, defiant in a time long before being an outsider was bottled up, made cool, and sold to us in the form of Rock & Roll...long before the advertisers taught us how to be self-destructive...and long before rap videos made that sense of self-destruction sexy to suburban kids.
It's interesting to note that in spite of all the positive spirit in these songs, when Alan Lomax returned to Parchman just a few years later, the younger convicts refused to sing them. They saw the songs as old-fashioned and thought singing them would be "Uncle Tomming." Ironically, of course, this was in the fifties...after Rock & Roll.
How sad then, that these songs were forgotten by African-Americans. Because what got left behind was a guiding voice. A voice that was so poetic, beautiful and honest in its heroic strength and language and so steadfast in its conviction and principle and so completely true to itself that no rapper out there today comes anywhere close to equaling its defiance. But, perhaps the worst thing of all...the saddest of thing all...is that a genuine dignity was lost. A dignity that could have been a navigational beacon...a roadmap to the high road...forsaken and cast aside...and, ultimately, all because a good-looking white boy from Memphis shook his hips on a thing called television.

DEEP.......2001-11-05

I really had no idea what i was in store for. But for those who love black, southern and prison history, spirituals, and are thirsting for music in its purest form, buy this CD!!! It has wonderful chants, commentary from Lomax, narrative from the inmatesand even clanking from the axes. You can hear the suffering and longing in their voices. You can hear the humor in may of the lyrics. Be sure to read the booklet so that you can get a clearer understanding of it all. It is a wonderful piece of recorded history. you may also want to buy the book Worse than Slavery, by Oshinsky so that you can get greater sense of exactly waht they are thinking about. One more thing..You will totally feel the energy of 22.

Incredibly powerful music.......2001-10-26

I was blown away when I listened to this CD for the first time. The recording is great. I didn't expect too much due to the time frame of the recording, but the quality is impressive. I bought this hoping to find more tracks like "Po' Lazarus" from the "O' Brother Where Art Thou" Soundtrack. What I got was much more.

One of the great documents of American music........2000-06-27

Words fail to describe this incredibly powerful album. I've had a copy since the 60's, and still have an unopened LP copy in my "vault" (along with the first Roberty Johnson LP). Luckily, I don't have to describe the power of the music - you can click on the samples, and hear for yourself.

Reams of praise have been heaped on this album, and every word has been an understatement.

If you have any interest whatever in American folk music or in blues or jazz, you either have a copy of this or should get one. This is the absolute peak of Lomax's years of collecting.

Cut 8. 'O' Berta' not the one I thought it was.......2002-09-11

I heard a great arraingement of "Berta" during the movie "The Piano" which stared Charles Dutton. I thought that arraingement or at least some approximation was on this CD but it turns out that track 8 'O' Berta' is a disapointing version of that great tune. Otherwise if you like to hear these types of songs you might like this cd.

Five years before the release of ANThology, Alien Ant Farm befriended Papa Roach, then fellow strugglers on the California club circuit. And so AAF wound up signing to Papa Roach's New Noise Records. AAF have furthermore strengthened their Roach connection by employing Jay Baumgardner, producer of their benefactors' Infest, to lend sheen to the noise. The result doesn't show a tremendous range, but is generally excellent, with sweeping, soaring guitars ("Whisper," "Stranded") and shuddering riffs ("Wish"), putting one in mind of a less disturbing version of Alice in Chains. Standouts include the opener, "Courage," led by Mike Cosgrove's off-kilter clatter and Dryden Mitchell's winding lyrics; a chopping, pleading cover of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal"; and the revved up "Flesh and Bone." With the tense, Pearl Jam-like "Attitude," AAF attempt to change the mood and tempo, and one hopes they'll continue such sonic explorations. I found this cd in a cd changer I bought off ebay so I thought I would check it out. I had heard Smooth Criminal, Movies, and Attitude and knew they were pretty good but I was surprised how good the rest of the songs were. Whatever happened to these guys?

I dont understand everyone who is like "hey man, this isnt harcore enough. The only good song is Smooth Criminal. Michael Jackson's cd is better." Did you even listen to the other songs on the cd? and if your so hardcore why did you buy the CD in the first place. I enjoyed almost every song on Anthology. and truANT. And their new cd Up in the Attic which you can get on i tunes or buy on amazon end of june.

One great album.......2006-02-20

First off this is the album that got me into music period! I got it for my 13th birthday. Prior to this album. I barely listened to music at all. Smooth Criminal is an excellent cover of MJ's original from the bad album.

I ask that anyone who reads this review, please don't listen to the haters that write a one paragraph piece of crap review of this album. I can understand that some people won't like the album, but don't be a hater. People do think that AAF does bad music that is about death, but the thing is that they use metaphors in their songs and make you think a little bit.

For example:
Happy death day isn't a song about killing everyone in the world or something. It is about when you hate someone so much and you wish them dead, but in the back of your mind you know that is they did die you would be devistated.

This record is truly a great album. I had a couple of friends who were hating on AAF a few weeks ago and I had them listen to one of their songs and they are now borrowing the album. That's how good it is. I also have gone through 2 copies and I need to get a 3rd soon!

Orange Appeal.......2006-01-13

This album is astounding. I first heard it about two years ago, and it still amazes me. Within those two years, I have found many reasons to absolutely love this CD.

Some of my favourites:
Courage-Very, very cool guitars. I get an outerworldly experience when I hear it. 9/10

Movies-Lyrically, one of the best on the album. Musically, it floors me how much emotion is put into this song from the singing to the instruments. 10/10

Flesh and Bone-A religious song. Not in your face, like Creed would do it, but quite subtly and nicely. This song is bass driven, like most of the tracks. 10/10

Whisper-Harder, more edgier. I don't think the subject matter pertains to regular people though [it's about record producers.] 9/10

Summer-Corny chorus. Good song. Heartfelt. You could hear the frustration and desperation in Dryden Vera Mitchell's voice. 9/10

Attitude-I get goosebumps when I hear this song. Slow, no guitar pounding. It's such a wonderful song, and it's definitely in my top ten Best Songs Ever list. 10/10

All in all, buy this album. Don't be disillusioned by the fact that they are protegees of Papa Roach. They sound NOTHING like that suck-fest. ANThology is my favourite album. It is not perfect, but it is really damn good. They don't need to curse or spew nonsencical, supposedly "deep" lyrics. They keep it simple, and it works out magnificently. The hidden track is gorgeous as well.

Definitely NOT Down and Definitely ON THE FARM..........2006-06-24

Little Feat is such an unusually talented and funky band - probably one of the best American bands of all time. And I think that this is their strongest CD. Many Litte Feat songs have such incredibly complex rythmns and beats; they almost seem to not follow a steady beat, yet the songs are very tight and in their own way, are never off beat. Very unique songs! This CD, from 1979, was Lowell George's last, as he died right after the production. It has 4 very solid tunes - Perfect Imperfection, Front Page News, Straight From The Heart, and Wake Up Dreaming. I remember buying this album right after it came out and I played it to several friends - withing a month or so, all of them bought the album. Very high praise indeed - this a wonderful CD. You can't go wrong.

For completists only.......2006-05-25

Down On the Farm would be Little Feat's final studio album to feature their leader Lowell George as the band would complete the release soon after his untimely death. While their previous release, Time Loves a Hero, showed an exciting new direction in fusion, Down on the Farm sounds like the band phoned it in. The great songs as well as their strong musical interplay were gone and a very glossy production didn't help matters.

The title track is the best song here and remains a staple of their live show. "Six Feet of Snow", which the band still performs in a much stronger bluegrass version, and "Kokomo" are the only other tracks you could all decent and would have been better if they weren't so overproduced. The rest of the album comes off sounding way too professional, kind of like when the Allman Brothers Band went adult contemporary in the early-80's. In fact, Lowell George's vocals sound very similar to Dickey Betts at times. The performances have very little passion and the album gets progressively worse from "Be One Now" to the end. Based on the fact that George's death was a severe blow to the band, you can forgive them for this release and the band would put out several strong albums after they regrouped in the late-80's. However, I would recommend this only to a diehard fan who wants to have their entire catalog.

An Often Underrated Album!.......2005-05-12

"Down on the Farm" was the last album to feature leadsinger, guitarist and songwriter Lowell George. Actually George had left the band before the album was finished, and sadly during a solo tour in 1979 he died from a heart-attack. George had always been the driving force in the band, but due to healthproblems ( drugs/alcohol) his position in the band had diminished after "Feats Don't Fail Me Now".

The previous album "Time Loves a Hero" had very little input from George and their musical style had become much more slick and and funky.

After George's death the other bandmembers decided to finish the album they had been working on before George left. Fortunately George had recorded vocals for most of the tracks, and he wrote 5 of the songs on the album. The album is often referred to as one of the weaker albums from the George era, a fact I never understood. It's no exaggeration that it's one my personal favourites.

George's vocals were never better and his songs are oustanding. "Be One Now" is simply heartbreaking. "Kokomo" and "Six Feet of Snow" are as good as anything on "Dixie Chicken" or "Feats". The title track written by Barrere is catchy and funky and featuring one his strongest vocal performances - I used to believe it was George singing.

Among the rest of the album's tracks "Straight From the Heart", written by George and Payne also deserves to be brought out.

The final two tracks could be the reason that the album as a whole is often underrated. They nice tracks; a little too polished for my taste, with very litle, if any, input from George. Still a great album.

Only for the greatest of Feat enthusiasts.......2004-08-02

This album was created using bits and pieces of an unfinished album found in Lowell's studio after his death. Be warned that Lowell never heard anything close to the final version of these songs. To credit him with co-production of "Down on the Farm" was a compliment to him at best and a commericial-backed white lie at worst. The truth is somewhere in between.

Having said the above, I'm still glad his buddies released it because it gave the world a few more nuggets of his slide work and amazing voice to hold onto in his absence.

Some gems with a couple of misfires... but what gems!.......2004-01-17

Many people are bit hard on this album, Lowell George's last with the group before his untimely death. While it may not be as brilliant as "Dixie Chicken" or "Feats Don't Fail Me Now," it is a definite improvement over "Time Loves A Hero." This is largely because Lowell contributions to this album are much greater than the previous one. And the songs he has written or co-written are great. "Kokomo" and "Be One Now" are the George standouts and Barrere contributes one of his best songs, "Perfect Imperfection." "Six Feet of Snow" is the band's one foray into Zydeco and is pretty good, too. The only real misfires on this album are the overlong closer, "Feel the Groove," and "Wake Up Dreaming." "Front Page News" is alright and the title track is solid. This is maybe not the best Feat album but it ranks pretty closely with "Last Record Album" and even the weaker tracks are quite listenable. And, as always, Lowell's voice and slide guitar playing are gorgeous and the entire band plays brilliantly.

The board book that comes with this has wonderful, bright, fun illustrations that my son (and I!) just love. The companion CD is fun for occasional use but not necessary if you're willing to read the book with your toddler (though it does score points for helping put my son right to sleep on fussy long car trips!)

solid and consistent album .......2007-02-15

The Good
" Bad Morning" is a driving anthem for those that can't stand hearing the morning alarm go off. You can't ignore the pounding drums and catchy chorus of "Forgive and Forget." "Around the Block" has infectious riffs and a fetching cowbell beat. That's right, cowbell. Vocalist Dryden Mitchell's chorus section is melodic and hook laden. "San Sebastian" uses muted riffs and blazing guitar licks to draw you in. Meaty riffs and a simple yet effective hook dominate "Getting Closer." Mitchell displays his best vocal performance here as he delivers with lots of heart and emotion. Acoustic, country style guitars with a modern rock twist help lead "Crickets." "State of Emergency" is loaded with thunderous drum beats and fiery guitar runs. "She's Only Evil" is a moving ballad about the negative aspects of a sour relationship. It either has a bombastic ending, or there's a bonus instrumental stuck in there.

I came across a copy of ANThology while over in Iraq, and bought Up In The Attic when I got back a couple of weeks ago. I had never heard of them before, and have to admit that the energy of their style really grabbed me. I even bought a copy to give as a gift. Highly recommended!

AAF is back, and doing it right!.......2006-09-05

AAF first came on the scene in 2001 with the hit single "Smooth Criminal" which was a cover of the Michael Jackson song of the same name. In 2003 they released a second album called truANT. This album didn't do well at all and caused AAF to be dropped by their record company. Now they are back and have released their 3rd album (4th if you count their independent album) and its truly some good rock music. As opposed to truANT, AAF took their original style and used it in this album. This is a must-have if you liked ANThology or want to just hear some good rock music.

An Interesting Contradiction.......2006-08-27

Alien Ant Farm are an extraordinarily interesting band, for various reasons. First of all, they made it big in the late 90's/ early two thousands by covering a somewhat obscure Michael Jackson song (they did a very great job of it, I might add.) They came up together with friends and then labelmates Papa Roach, and had minor parallel runs of success. While some remember Alien Antfarm as a musical footnote, a novelty act if you will, people that actually listened to their major label debut "ANThology" knew that there was more to this band than bizarre covers. The bizarre actions of eccentric frontman Dryden Mitchell may have had something to do with the bands stagnancy; he was distant, talked in strange voices, and just acted like an all-around nerd in both television and magazine interviews. After a bus accident looked like it would end AAF's short career, Dryden and Co. persevered to release a sophomore album, "truANT" for Dreamworks a few years after "ANThology" broke. While more of an artistic triumph, the second album thrust the band further into obscurity (despite the memorable video for "These Days" which featured the band crashing the Hip Hop Source Awards and playing on top of a building.) Just when I thought they were done for, I saw that they had released this, their third album, "Up In The Attic" (after their new album "Third Draft" failed to see the light of day due to conflicts with Geffen.) The album basically continues in the vein of "TRUant", with splashes of salsa, funk, and SoCal punk playing over their alternative hard rock backbone. The interesting thing about this band is that they seem to be unsure as to whether they want to be a successful commercial act, or a bizarre, artistically satisfying, ne'er understood college rock band. They have the skills to do both, but just when they are heading in one direction, they take a U-turn and go the other way. For example, on "It Could Happen", Dryden sings like a maniac, delivering an unbelievable vocal performance over dizzying guitar playing. However, the lyrics are downright awful; but this is bizarre because some of the songs feature outstanding lyrics but pedestrian musicianship. Alien Ant Farm have all the tools to make it: unbelievably catchy hooks, Monstrous choruses, outstanding musicianship, and a bizarre, charismatic frontman. They just have to make a choice. Overall, I would recommend this cd to fans of the last two, but offer that it won't win the band any new fans either.
