5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of the New Christy Minstrels.......2007-01-10

When I was a small boy in the 1950s, my dad used to bring young sailors home with him sometimes. He or my mom would give them a home-cooked meal and an opportunity to visit with their kids (my siblings and me). In return, sometimes, they would provide engaging conversation and/or musical entertainment. So it was with a couple of young doughboys who would later wow audiences across America and around the world: Dean Jones and Randy Sparks.

While Dean went on to become an actor in the Disney stable and star of such classic films as 'The Love Bug' and 'Beethoven', Randy formed a band and 'sparked' (pun intended!) the Folk Music fad that swept like a wave around the world in the mid-1960s. Named for the Christy Minstrels who rambled from town to dusty town in the Old West entertaining far-flung American settlers, Randy Sparks and the New Christy Minstrels traveled around the world and fanned the cooling embers of our rich folk heritage to a bright, new flame.

Songs like 'Green, Green', 'Ramblin'' and 'Today' as well as many made popular by such other folk artists as Peter, Paul and Mary and the Kingston Trio, were often written and first performed by the Christies. Many of Randy's troupe, such as lead singer Barry Maguire, went on to have great solo careers in the music business.

Randy Sparks and Dean Jones may not remember us, but my dad, Frank King, never tires of reminiscing about entertaining them in our San Diego family home 'way back when.

I am so happy NCM have come out on CD. I have almost every NCM album (yes, vinyl) they made. My father taught me to love good music, no matter what the genre. NCM were my favorites growing up, because they so heavily relied on the voices, rather than a show or the instruments. It is a simple form of performance music, but when you look into the combinations of harmony and the talents that sprang into other areas from this group - it is one of the foundations of today's music.

4 out of 5 stars Presenting/In Person The New Christy Minstrels.......2006-11-05

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the CD. Given that there are two albums on the CD, it is a good value if this is your type of music.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-06-09

Both albums on one CD...what a bargin! A nice touch for the NCM fans!

Perhaps the hardest-working band in the Lone Star State, this Denton, Texas, four-piece's annual 250-plus live show agenda has molded them tighter than a No. 6 train in Manhattan rush hour. On Slobberbone's third album, songwriter Brent Best still prays to a homespun punk-rock confessional with both ears equally entrenched in Texas twang, his most intimate stories parlayed into a country-tinged compound of blustery barn-burners and back-porch ballads. The band has matured, slamming the door on their ever-charming sloppiness while turning to pedal steel, mandolin, banjo, even horns. The 12-string and fiddle symmetry of "Meltdown" slams into "Placemat Blues," which borrows a riff from the Replacements' rocker, "I.O.U." (from Pleased to Meet Me, recorded at the same Ardent Studios in Memphis). But the rest of the way, Slobberbone keeps it more refined ("Josephine"), even elegant at times ("Magnetic Heaven"), without ever losing that Southern boy sense of humor ("Gimme Back My Dog," "Pinball Song"). --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars The essential album.......2007-05-11

You know those albums where from begining to end the musician(s) can do no wrong? This is one of those albums. In my humble collection of 300-400 CD's this is one of the 5 greatest. This album is Slobberbone at it's finest, firing on all cylinders. There are no throw away songs, no filler, just one amazing song after another. This is a CD I know I'll still be putting in the stereo 20 years from now.

5 out of 5 stars God, I miss them........2006-07-18

This is a brilliant album by a great band at their peak. The reviews that precede this one have already broken it down song by song, so I won't. I'll just add that years from, people will look back on this work and hold it much higher regard than enough people did at the time it was released. I've read that Van Gogh had trouble selling paintings in his lifetime as well.

5 out of 5 stars an album about love, losers and life.......2004-04-10

i almost missed the notice, but when i spotted that the old 97's were going to play at the horseshoe in toronto, only a 90 minute bus ride away from the UWO campus, i threw down the books, packed up an overnight bag and jumped onto the next bus. i had never heard of the opening band, some cheezy name like 'slobber butt' or something equally silly - what did i care, i would be seeing the old 97's in a few hours !

little did i know.

it took a while for me to get into them, but by the time brent best got down on his knees, sweating blood and pleading himself hoarse on 'Josephine', i was hooked but good. i picked up their cd's after the show (Barrel Chested and Crow Pot Pie), but when i got home, i was so disappointed to find that Josephine wasn't on either (tho Billy Pritchard was a nice consolation surprise).

when i heard that this album had been released, i ordered it online that very day. and unlike the narrator in the song, i can get my fix of 'josephine' whenever i need. the rest of the album is a fine mix of wit and pain, but if josephine doesn't make you weep in sympathy, you need an operation to repair your tear ducts.

5 out of 5 stars Oh. Hell. Ya........2003-10-09

This little beauty of a CD prit'near melted in my lil' player. I didn't take it out of the magazine for months. My girlfriend moved in and SHE loved them and they spent another three months in the machine. These guys are so very talented, it's kinda hard to explain without you having heard them. They all-out rock, but they're tight and smart about it, they don't rock out some big solo as an expression of the guitarist's ego. No. They place it well, it's clear that the songs are crafted into their cohesive wholes and not a series of good lyrics tatooed on the coolest riffs on hand at the moment. And talk about your swanky lyrics! They go from the tear-jerky, wistful "Josephine" to "Tilt-a-Whirl" (which isn't on this album, but that hardly detracts from the point) where his girlfriend can't pass up the blinking lights of a carnival and ends up ejected from the, yes, tilt-a-whirl, All the while he bemoans accusatorily "tilt-a-whirl, you took my girl." It's good clean fun. Just a little addictive. See them live if you have the chance, your ears will ring with glee.

4 out of 5 stars Bracing Blues Rock With a Sense of Humor.......2003-03-20

Slobberbone's "Everything You Thought Was Right Was Wrong Today," bears at least a passing resemblence to the work of Social Distortion, namely blues rock with an occasional country twang and a dash of punk attitude thrown in. What separates Slobberbone is their keen sense of humor. Tracks like "Lazy Guy," "Gimmie Back My Dog," and "Pinball Song," are both biting and funny, and even an ostensibly serious song like "Lumberlung" has its amusing aspects. Other standout tracks include "Some New Town," "Magnetic Heaven" and "That is All." Not everything works, but enough of it does to make this album a keeper.

Overall, an excellent blues, country, punk rock album in the fine tradition of Social Distortion.

Amazon.com essential recording

Though Dwight Yoakam is tagged with a well-deserved (and in his case complimentary) "outsider" label, he is, ironically, one of country music's most accessible artists. Tomorrow's Sounds Today, his follow-up to the wonderful, acoustic-only Dwightyoakamacoustic.net, is proof. While it may be difficult to think of Yoakam as accessible--his music and persona are brash, cocky throwbacks to the days when slightly dangerous country artists actually did fall off their barstools--he has become so adept at incorporating a broad palate of influences that music fans of many stripes feel comfortable with the Kentucky cowboy. On Tomorrow's Sounds Today, Yoakam again reaches to hard-driving, old-school, honky-tonk country as the main ingredient while leavening the mix with jolting shots of rockabilly, Tex-Mex shuffle, and ain't-love-heartbreakin' sentiment. Yoakam's primary influence, Buck Owens, guests on three tracks, "The Sad Side of Town", "I Was There" (featuring Pete Anderson's growling guitar work), and "Alright, I'm Wrong," which showcases the accordion of Flaco Jimenez. Elsewhere, Yoakam delivers rocking country backbeats, memorable hooks, dusty down-home waltzes in full drawl, even a cover of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me." As usual, Yoakam's impeccable band is up to the task, handling the songs with ease while not sacrificing a single volt of electricity. --S. Duda

5 out of 5 stars Yoakam deserves the comparisons to Patsy and Hank..........2006-12-10

I was channel surfin', and the video for "What Do You Know About Love?" kept coming on. I watched it. I didn't think much of the video, but I loved the song. Then I got a chance to get this CD as a free bonus, so I went for it. And I love every note of it. Dwight is one of the few modern country stars with SOUL. He can be compared to country music's great artists, like Hank and Patsy. His stuff has the soul of old country music, and it's modern at the same time. He really means what he sings. This CD are amazing. I especially adore the first 3 songs. I never get tired of them. A friend of mine call this album "whiny", and I got quite irritated at her. She was raised on modern country music, which is generally crappy, overly sentimental ballads, or right wing, jingoistic, wrap yourself in the flag garbage. Dwight is real country music, and it isn't whiny, it's sincere. Country music is white man's blues, with songs about heartbreak, cheating wives, battles with the bottle, redemption, etc., etc., and Dwight knows this, and he lives it, especially on this album. This is a wonderful album, one of Yoakam's greatest, and one of the best country albums in a long, long time.

4 out of 5 stars Thank You Dwight........2006-04-24

If You People, Been Looking At My Other Reviews, You Understand That I Like This Kid. He Brings Us An Other And Different Kind Of Country Music. A Kind Of Music I Realy Like.

5 out of 5 stars This is it!.......2005-09-05

Some folks say "Hillbilly Deluxe" or "This Time" were the finest Dwight albums ever. I strongly disagree. This is the one. If Dwight never released another album or never sang another note, we'd still have "Tomorrow's Sounds Today". You cannot (and will not) EVER find a country music album so complete. Hey, this album should be required listening for any fan of country music. I can't pick one song that stands out on this whole album; they are all equally good. I dont think I can say enough about the quality of this piece, but it is by far the finest Country Music album of the past 30 years; and you can take that to the bank! A++++++

5 out of 5 stars "Tomorrow's Sounds Today".......2004-12-18

I'm pretty new to Dwight Yoakam's music. Unlike many other reviewers of this album, I have not been a long-time Yoakam fan, nor do I own everything from his musical catalogue. In fact, this is only the third studio album of his I have purchased. Perhaps I do not have the same insight that other Yoakam fans may have, but this CD is simply too good for me to let go unrecognized.

Take just one listen and you'll see that Dwight Yoakam is not like any of his contemporary country acts. "Tomorrow's Sounds Today" is a collection of 14 exceptionally unique, beautifully presented, and well-written songs. As a whole, the CD is delightfully entertaining and well textured with a varied selection of material, almost all of which was written by the man himself.

Some of my favorites on this CD are "Free to Go" (which focuses on the uncertain nature of love), "Dreams of Clay" (a beautifully written song about love gone astray), and "Heartaches Are Free" (which is reminiscent of the classic Hank Williams.) Over all, I'd recommend this CD for anyone who likes real country music that has a bit of an alternative twist.

4 out of 5 stars Entusiastic "real" country that refuses to dissapoint.......2004-04-20

Dwight Yoakam's Tomorrow's Sounds Today is a conspicuous title considering the album's constant references to a sound that witnessed its livelihood many a yesterday ago. But, any listener familiar with Yoakam's reputation, would come to expect that the country singer's retro-styling would only make the music involved more interesting.

Riding on the strength of these tunes, this album shines as bright as a southern star. While it's safe to say that Yoakam has once again spent some time writing from a room at the Heartbreak Hotel, with songs such as "Time Spent Missing You," "A Place To Cry," and the exceptional "Dreams of Clay," it is also quite obvious that he still possesses his uncanny ability to make it sound hip to be broken-hearted. Armed with his trademark country croon, Yoakam trots through an album that revisits influences ranging from Buck Owens (of which he duets on the album's closing bonus cuts) to Elvis to Cheap Trick, with a cover version of their age old hit "I Want You To Want Me." Basically, there is a gem of some sort here for most anyone. Although not quite a seminal D.W. recording, this one still concludes making you feel pretty cool to be blue.

    5 out of 5 stars From Out of Nowhere . . ........2006-11-06

. . . while David Grisman was taking a break from his ground-breaking "Dawg Music" came this gem of a traditional bluegrass album, featuring:

    1) The rock-steady Herb Pederson on banjo (his letter-perfect reading of Earl Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Chimes" and his break on "Hot Corn, Cold Corn" are required listening for any aspiring picker)

    2) Spirited fiddling by James Buchannan

    3) The always reliable Emory Gordy Jr. on bass

    4) Pleasing vocals from the "Dawg" himself ("Little Miss Blue Eyes," "The Children Are Crying")

    5) Some absolutely etherial singing by some longhair refugee from the country-rock scene by the name of Vince Gill ("Lonesome River," "Making Plans"). I hear he's had a bit of success since then.

It's always amazing to me how certain combinations of musicians find each other, what the common thread may be, and what they can produce (as well as what might have been . . . ). What's notable about this collection is the tight harmony singing of Gill, Grisman, and Pederson, particularly on "Making Plans" and The Osborne Brothers' classic "Once More." Truly a great one-shot effort.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bluegrass By Great Guys.......2001-06-07

Do yourself a favor and get this cd, if you like bluegrass you won't be disappointed. Along with a (much younger) Vince Gill appear the great Emory Gordy Jr, Jim Buchanan, Dave Grisman, and Herb Pedersen. If you know bluegrass, you already know what that means.

3 out of 5 stars Lonesome River song thrills, chills to the bluegrass bone!!!.......1999-01-31

Alas, my computer would not allow me to preview the songs from the site. I have, however, heard the song Lonesome River done from this CD on a Nashville station. It is classic bluegrass that I could listen to repeatedly, for days on end, I believe. I will be purchasing this CD. I can't wait to here the rest of the songs. I am extremely hopeful that the rest of the selections will be as soul-satisfying as Lonesome River is. I actually would have awarded more stars, based on this one song, but thought that I really should hear more than one. Thus, I awarded 3 stars as sign of great expectations.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Romance! Music! Comedy! And ELLEN FOLEY!.......2000-02-02

Live stage shows are an art form much overlooked in America; so finding this CD was a wonderful surprise, as it allowed me to enjoy something I wouldn't otherwise ever have a chance to see: a play starring my favorite actress, ELLEN FOLEY! I've always been more impressed with her acting (NIGHT COURT) than her singing (BAT OUT OF HELL) and this CD contains more of her presence and personality than any record I've heard her on! It's mainly the story of a woman who has 2 encounters with a man who, while he comes across as optimistic and uplifting on the surface, is really a self-destructive personality with problems of his OWN! (I could probably relate because I've met the type!) Highly entertaining; highly recommended! (Now if only someone would reissue her solo album, NIGHTOUT; or get her to do a new album... we can hope, right?)
