5 out of 5 stars Save Me When I Die.......2006-03-31

Seemingly possessed by the demons inherent in a rock'n'roll lifestyle, Too Slim has penned these 11 original songs testifying to trials and tribulations, but with salvation nevertheless close at hand. Despite a possible tongue-in-cheek perspective, the songs possess a certain sense of spirituality. For example, "Walk on Water", the percussion-heavy opening track, tells of the guidance offered by an older and wiser mentor philosophizing about human limitations.

Not all the songs are about regret, guilt and fear of retribution. However, these sentiments are expressed quite vividly on the seemingly Robert Johnson/C.C.R.-inspired "Mississippi Moon" - "....hellhounds runnin', hot after my tail [and soul], on a moonlit night on the swamp with the snakes and the alligators". The guitar-explosive "Soul Perspective", showing a slight nod to Robin Trower's "Day of the Eagle", and "Missed that Train", both underscore his determination to overcome negative forces.

Rather than berate himself too much for his weaknesses for alcohol and women, as evidenced in the radio-friendly "Brown Bottle Rock", the sultry double-entendre of "Broad Minded" or the slinky rockabilly edge of "Some Kinda Momma", Too Slim rejoices in these celebratory vices. Maybe he's not quite ready to be saved yet!

The nostalgic, but overly-long "Wish I Was Fishin" and "Oven Burnin' Woman" are funk-blues-jazz-rock mixtures, the latter offering a sensual analogy to wood-chopping not unlike blues-harper David Rotundo's "Can I Come In Your Kitchen", which gives a new meaning to "cooking"!

"Flatback Flathead", a slide guitar scorcher with a driving beat, is the requisite car song. It's right up there with Deep Purple's "Highway Star", David Lindley's "Mercury Blues" or Golden Earrings' "Radar Love".

The CD closer is an excellent smooth jazz instrumental showcase that reinforces the tightness they have accomplished as a team, while displaying the tremendous individual talents of these three musicians.

4 out of 5 stars BEST KEPT SECRET IN THE U.S. !!!!.......2005-08-01

Since seeing this great band live several times I have bought 4 of their albums but I think this is the best one I have. Tim "too slim" Langford is a great guitar player with tons of energy. Tee shirt says "Straight Whiskey Blues With A Southern Rock Beer Chaser" Great way to describe their music. I recomend you buy this album and if you get a chance to see them live, don't pass it up!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Blues.......2003-09-11

The new album by Too Slim is in my opinion his best to date. The band just seems to keep getting better. I have seem them live twice in the past year and their live shows are great. The band works hard and Too Slim (Tim Langford) can play the guitar. I picked up this album after their live show in Helena several weeks ago. Be sure to pick this CD up and all their other albums also. You won't regret it. See them live if you get the chance. It is well worth it. Play on!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best CD yet........2003-08-25

Thanks to Greenburo I got an advance copy of this CD. Being from Spokane myself, we're real homers for Tim's music. I think this is the best CD from these guys yet. I highly recommend it . And remember, "chop, chop, chop, all night long!"

5 out of 5 stars Best Contemporary Blues/Rock Album of 2003!.......2003-08-20

I purchased the CD at one of their live shows and I can't quit listening to it. Too Slim is an incredibly talented guitar player/song writer. This CD is pure americana with influences ranging from CCR to The Allman Brothers to ZZ Top and Johnny Winter. Buy it you will like it!!!

There were two essential qualities to the Cult's music: Billy Duffy's soaring guitar lines and Ian Astbury's distinctive vocals. When that partnership dissolved in 1995, the Cult floundered. High Octane Cult wisely focuses on the band's better years, from the release of Love in 1985 to Sonic Temple in 1989, including hits like "Fire Woman" and "She Sells Sanctuary." The fact that the latter turned up in a car commercial both indicates the Cult's position in the pop-metal pantheon and serves as a depressing reminder of the fate of much guitar-oriented rock. At least the same thing hasn't happened to Metallica. --Genevieve Williams

4 out of 5 stars clever compiltation.......2006-07-01

This a fine collection of songs from The Cults earliest albums, beginning with "Dreamtime" through the exceptionally simple titled "The Cult" and has therefore a lot to offer, although the subtitle "Ultimate Collection 1998-1995" is not accurate, because 2 songs date from 1996. It even consists of 3 singles ("In The Clouds", "The Witch" and "Resurrection Joe") which have not been part of any of the albums spanning this period (with the exception of "The Cult Singles" album, that is, which has most of these songs also) and more, contains the scarce and unknown track "Beauty's On the Street", to my knowledge never released before. Even if you don't heard this song before you can easyly recognize this as an example of a The Cult song (which is recorded somewhere at the time when no specific album was gained for and shortly afterwards the band collapsed). Not included of course are songs from the latterday album "Between Good and Evil". But altogether this is a very good introduction to the music of this band. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars If you get only one Cult album, ..........2006-03-30

this is the one you want. Just about every song is very good or great. One of the most underrated bands in history. Listening to this collection will make you scratch your head and wonder these guys aren't world famous yet crap like Puddle of Mudd, Nickelback and Limp Bizkit has gotten major airplay over the years.
My only quibble would be that they edit out the Indian chant intro to "Wild Hearted Son" and they fade out of "Heart of Soul" a little bit quicker than on the underrated '91 album "Ceremony."

4 out of 5 stars This album rocks pretty hard.......2003-01-08

I wasn't a "Cult fan" - I just liked a couple Cult tunes I heard on the radio. Man, these guys jam. What this means is that I wouldn't be a big fan of their "Love" album style, but I love their "Sonic Temple" and "Electric" style. Which is not to say that I don't like the hits here from "Love", but that's the point of "best of" collections, no? Well, you could buy the 3 albums listed above and listen through the songs you don't like, but even then you'd be missing the first cut on this CD - "In The Clouds" - which wasn't released on album, and is in fact one of the hardest rockin' Cult tunes, and probably my favorite song. Put it on, turn it up, and drive on.....

5 out of 5 stars Firrrrrrrrrrrrrre.......2002-03-01

..."the fire in your eyes, keeps me alive"...everyone join in now..."and the world turns around..."

Yet another one of those discs that makes me wanna drive my car really, really fast...

5 out of 5 stars Time makes it better........2001-06-24

I bought this CD two years ago cause I wanted the song "Firewoman". Then the rest of the songs grew on me. after two years of playing the songs on this CD, I have come to think of The Cult of a band I should have been listening to for years. I am now a Cult fan for life.

4 out of 5 stars Dedicated to the Memory of Maynard Ferguson - recommended for MF Fans.......2007-05-08

It is entirely appropriate that the first recorded tribute to the late Maynard Ferguson comes from the Dan McMillion Jazz Orchestra. There is no more devoted follower of Maynard Ferguson, his trumpet style, and his music than Dan McMillion. Though no recording date is supplied, it is clear that the music on "High Octane" was recorded very near to the time of the great trumpeter's death. The CD insert includes this line, "This CD is dedicated to the memory of Maynard Ferguson, May 4, 1928 - August 23, 2006."

But in truth, all the Dan McMillion Jazz Orchestra CD's are tributes to Maynard Ferguson. "High Octane" falls directly in line with the pattern of McMillion's previous releases (all of which are very enjoyable and well recommended). At least eight of eleven tracks on the present CD come directly out of the Ferguson book from the 50's to the 90's. And the three charts that may not be from the Ferguson book are certainly written in the style of the Ferguson band. All the charts are played with power, precision and enthusiasm by this excellent Florida based band. One of the great attractions of the McMillion Jazz Orchestra is hearing the Ferguson book played with full big band instrumentation. Hear for example, the trombone section on "Another Star" and the baritone sax on "Night in Tunisia."

McMillion himself plays Maynard's parts and while there was only one Maynard Ferguson, McMillion does a more than credible job. In fact, his power and accuracy and high note chops are often quite astonishing (e.g. "Danny Boy", "Four"" and "Hey There"). On "Don't Let The Sun Go Down on Me" he passes Maynard's part over to lead trumpeter Chad Shoopman, who matches McMillion's power and chops. The band itself boasts some excellent soloists. Keith Oshiro shines on trombone and baritone horn, as do saxophonists David Moss, Tom Dietz and Dalton Hagler, trumpeter John De Paolo, and pianist Richard Drexler. Drummer Glen Bush is a strong and swinging though somewhat heavy-handed drummer. But then again this exciting music requires lots of power from the drum chair.

While "High Octane" is a tad short at 49 minutes, it is a warmly recommended tribute to arguably the greatest brass player of the 20th century. There is no doubt that Maynard Ferguson would have been be delighted by "High Octane." So too, will those listeners who love Ferguson's music or who have enjoyed any of the earlier CD's by the Dan McMillion Jazz Orchestra. Dan McMillion makes no great claim to originality, but his tireless devotion to Maynard Ferguson and big band jazz is paying high dividends for lovers of this art form.

The Fue's post-grunge high-octane style connotes whiskey, cigarettes, and race cars. Unlike many of their modern contemporaries, the sonic characteristics of The Fue's music draw more on the great rock & roll bands of the sixties and seventies than the modern, perfectly produced rock bands of today. There is a raw, uncooked feel to The Fue's music that makes it all the more endearing and contemporary.
