worth money.......2007-05-24
this cd set is definately worth the money spent. i haven't heard some of the music before but was willing to give it a try.
Great Patriotic Music.......2007-02-21
Beautiful music perfect for feeling patriotic. Received CD promptly and in great condition.
A good choice of tunes with good quality.......2005-06-30
If you like military tunes and marches, this 2-CD is a good choice. The orchestration is good, it is well played and the quality of recording is good. If you like this kind of music, it is a good choice to buy.
Brilliant!!!.......2003-08-11
I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.
Best Patriotic Music I've Found.......2001-09-20
Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

Aaron Copland.......2007-05-13
It's okay but I dont listen to it much. I have other things I would rather listen to like Chris Isaak Lawrence Welk Bee Gees etc
Best Collection of Aaron Copland.......2005-12-21
Aaron Copland is for me one of three of America's greatest composers of the 20th Century. Bernard Herrmann and Jerome Moross are the other two. Aaron Copland would have been 100 years old on November 14, 2000. In reflection I turn back to my first Copland album, "Copland's Greatest Hits." I was familiar as most people are with "Hoe Down" and that was the springboard for me. What attracted me was that distinctive "American" sound and "American" quality of the piece. This "American" sound is very present in Jerome Moross' score for the epic Western film, "The Big Country." One can also find similar influences in Bernard Herrmann's score for "The Kentuckian" and very much like Copland, Herrmann researched and interpolated regional folk songs and integrated them into his own unique style. Because I always liked film scores and also very much liked Copland's "Hoe Down" I always thought there had to be some connection with the musical approach. When I got this album and listened to "Appalachian Spring" for the first time I knew that I had discovered pure "Americana" and I have found that sound replicated in so many films. If you listen to the scores for "The Natural" or "Field of Dreams" or even recently to "Saving Private Ryan" this sound is present. This is a tribute to Copland and American music. Copland reinvented American music by giving it his unique structure. Copland's music is so simply melodic yet richly textured that it has an inherent sophistication that defines our nation. This is my favorite Copland album. That may be sentimental, but it helped me try to define a sound that I personally found moving and uplifting. I highly recommend this album of collected recordings. The recording of "Appalachian Spring" on this CD performed by the New York Philharmonic and conducted by Leonard Bernstein is my favorite recording of this piece to date.
The finest version of Appalachian Spring -- bar none!.......2001-12-09
I marvel at this CD every time I listen to it. This CD features Aaron Copland conducting the Boston Symphony in a performance of his own Appalachian Spring. There are many poignant hesitations and nuances in this performance. There is good reason why this piece has become synonymous with Americana -- listen to it, close your eyes and just let the images unfold.
This CD also contains Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Philharmonic in the Billy the Kid Ballet Suite. It is a spectacular performance as well.
Outstanding Collection of Copland Music.......1999-11-09
Every cut on this CD is very good. My personal favorites are "Appalacian Spring", and the "The Tender Land - Finale: The Promise of Living." I would recommend this CD to anyone who is a fan of Classical Music.
Breathtaking, beautiful and aweinspiring!.......1999-07-12
This is no doubt one of the most beautiful classical CD's I have ever listened to. Copland was and is an extremely gifted composer.

The early vanguards of a Toronto music scene that would eventually produce Tragically Hip, Jane Siberry, Cowboy Junkies, and other standouts, Blue Rodeo's stateside profile never quite matched its Canadian acclaim--and we're definitely the poorer country for it. Frontmen Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor may anchor their songs deep in tasteful range of American roots rock , but there's nary a trace of slavish devotion to any of it. Indeed they inject a countrified, Gram Parsons sensibility into a simmering cover of the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody," and shimmering Big Star/Twilley power pop hooks to "Rose Colored Glasses." Be it the folk-evocations of "Hasn't Hit Me Yet" and neo-country "Bad Timing" or the spare, sensuous ballad "Dark Angel" (featuring Sarah McLachlan on piano and backing vocals) and dreamy drone of "Side of the Road," Blue Rodeo takes some familiar bottles and fills them with heady new musical wine. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
"America's best band is...Canadian." - Rolling Stone * 14 essential tracks * 2 previously unreleased tracks Blue Rodeo are one of Canada's greatest bands, having sold almost four million albums worldwide. Greatest Hits collects 14 essential tracks on one exceptional CD, pulled from their catalog of nine albums. Featured are the poignant ballad "Try," the guitar-powered "Side of the Road" (from the group's psychedelic masterpiece Nowhere to Here), and their recent hit "Bulletproof." Two previously unreleased recordings - their unique take on the Bee Gee's classic "To Love Somebody" (complete with fiddles and pedal steel) and a live version of "After The Rain" - make this, their first ever compilation, even more special.
Customer Reviews:
From a Canadian living in Europe.......2006-08-03
Listening to this album brought me back to my highschool days in Ontario and days with my friends who listened to Blue Rodeo. The choice of songs is great, although a few more ballads would have made the whole album all the better and more complete. This is a great album from a very unique band!
Canadian country / rock / folk at it's finest! .......2006-01-28
BLUE RODEO...were mainly influence by many great Canadian born artists , like...NEIL YOUNG...and most of...THE BAND!
As we find out in their history/live DVD * IN STEREOVISION * there was something called the...TORONTO SOUND...in the 1960's that was formed on...YONGE STREET...in TORONTO , by the many Canadian artists that played there...The Hawks[THE BAND : Robbie Robertson]...who were one of those bands along with...The Sparrows [STEPPENWOLF : Jerry Edmonton/Mars Bonfire]...THE MYNAH BIRDS...NEIL YOUNG...JONI MITCHELL...also played in the Toronto...YORKVILLE...area at that time.
People mistakenly write [including...ROLLING STONE , magazine] that...BLUE RODEO...play an...Americana style of music.
That is NOT true at all...Yes...BLUE RODEO...have some American musical influences but they also have British influences as well and also some CANADIAN ones...After all the world's musical evolution didn't just stop North of the 49th Parallel or South of TEXAS...Canada [or what would eventually become Canada] had been playing their own style of music for centuries just as in all of the America's.
But it is easy to understand this confusion because many people think that the major song writers for...THE BAND...are American...The themes for the songs may have mostly been about America but the music and words was written by Canadians...And they added their own Canadian musical influences to their music to create a new sound that was a mixture of musical styles from many countries and not just from the U.S.
BLUE RODEO's Greatest Hits...gives one a small taste of how what others started in TORONTO , CANADA , in the 1960's has evolved.
This is really CANADIAN country / rock / folk at it's finest!
Ironically this CD starts out with a great cover song...TO LOVE SOMEBODY...by the...BEE GEES...I guess that we can also add Australia , into their mix of sounds.
Most of the songs here , were hits in their native land , but they prove that they can country / rock / folk , with the best that the U.S. has to offer.
You hear great Canadian country ballads and...JIM's...beautiful voice in such songs as...TRY...BULLET PROOF...BAD TIMING...sung and written by...JIM CUDDY...I would describe him as the romantic in this band...Thought provoking country/rock songs such as...LOST TOGETHER...ROSE COLOURED GLASSES...The...DOORish like DIAMOND MINE...written and sung by their other lead singer and song writer...GREG KEELOR [They rotate from song to song].
GREG...I would call the...JOHN LENNON...of this band.
This band plays all kinds of music...on this CD , from country/folk...HASN'T HIT ME YET...the folky...DARK ANGEL [with guest...SARAH McLACHLAN]...to the psychedelic/rock...SIDE OF THE ROAD.
Here in CANADA , their live shows are stuff of legend and this is proven on their 2 CD live disc...JUST LIKE A VACATION.
They had trouble getting airplay in the U.S. because their sound was so unigue [is it country? is it rock? is it pop?]
that U.S. radio stations didn't know what label to give them...What kind of music station should play them?
In Canada , radio stations were not so strict about the musical styles on their radio stations...They would get country , rock and pop airplay.
BLUE RODEO...are not just "greatest hit wonders" as their CDs are consistantly great.
Albums like...5 DAYS IN JULY...CASINO...OUTSKIRTS...LOST TOGETHER...NOWHERE TO HERE...ARE YOU READY...ect...stand up very well , on their own.
So , if you want just a taste of some of their best work , get this CD and you will not be disappointed.
If you want even more greatest hits from...BLUE RODEO...then I would also buy their great 2 live CDs called...JUST LIKE A VACATION...[It is cheaper at Amazon.ca and is sold in Canadian funds]
And/or you can also buy their only DVD...IN STEREOVISION...for live performances and videos of their hits! [100+ minutes long]
As I have written , it is country/rock/folk at it's finest!
Only a couple missing..........2005-07-22
Love all the songs a couple of my faves were missing though...
Great Songs - but not all of them!.......2005-04-18
I gave this album 3 out of 5 stars because of the glaring omissions. While alot of their best tracks are here, where's Rebel, How Long, House Of Dreams(One of their best songs, period), Rain Down On Me, Flying..? I could keep going, and that's only from their first three albums. One would hope Volume 2 will correct this. Actually, they could probably fill 3 greatest hits albums. Any real fan of these guys would just pick up any one of their albums,(better yet, get them all) you won't be disappointed with any of them. By the way the guy from Missouri is an idiot. "The Days In Between" was one of their poorer albums and "Tremolo" was a middling album and I know what I'm talking about, I've been a fan since BR's first album "Outskirts" way back in '87. Get yourself "Five Days In July", it's Blue Rodeo's masterpiece.
America's loss..........2004-12-11
This is a nice collection of their greatest hits up in Canada because I don't think they have ever had one here. America's loss! Nice sound with great harmonies that is very reminiscent of many great `60's bands like The Byrds, CSN and The Hollies. They even do an amazing cover of The Bee Gees "To Love Somebody" with strings and horns which has never been previously released. Their songs go from pop to country to rock to folk and even to some great psychedelia (check out "Diamond Mine"). They sound like five different bands that are each very talented. Sarah McLachlan's voice and piano appear on one song..."Dark Angel".

Aaron Copland: Essential Classics.......2003-11-21
This excellent introduction to the symphonic Copland repackages an earlier "Decca Double Decker" (see B000004284). Deleted are "Old American Songs" and added are "Billy the Kid" and "Danzon Cubano". These recordings were made from 1969-1994. The sonics are exemplary. The performances are all very good to excellent. Everyone has their personal favorites of these works so your mileage may vary.
Dorati & Detroit SO > Rodeo, El Solon Mexico, Dance Symphony. Howarth & London Sinfonietta > Music for the Movies. Marriner & The Academy > Quiet City. Metha & LAPO > Fanfare for the Common Man, Appalachian Spring, Lincoln Portrait with Gregory Peck, narrator. Philip Jones Brass Ensemble > Ceremonial Fanfare. Zinman & Baltimore SO > Billy the Kid, Danzon Cubano.
Gregory Peck comes across very, very well. Warm, personal, forthright. Worth the price of the disc just to hear him deliver the words wrapped in Copland's music as directed by Metha and performed by the LA Philharmonic Orchestra.
Don't expect any copious liner notes here -- there aren't any. Just a listing of what's what and who did what. Two panels of the folded sheet are needlessly occupied by advertising other "essential" CDs. I would gladly rip them out if I didn't like the overall design so much. The art direction and design of the package is stellar but lacks "essential" or any background information.
Unless I'm mistaken, there are 5 "hits" on the first disc and 6 on the second. That's 11. The subtitle here is "12 Greatest Hits". Am I missing something?
Still, judging by what's here, the selections and performances, an excellent compilation. I'm glad to have it.

It's somehow fitting that the first definitive career overview from Blue Rodeo opens with a dressed-down but impassioned version of the Bee Gees' orchestral-pop classic "To Love Somebody." Not that the veteran Toronto roots-rockers are known for covers: the mark they've carved in Canadian music post-1985 is their own. But, even at their most ambitious, Blue Rodeo remain a bar-band at heart--a canny bunch with all the right rock & roll/pop/country/psych reference points pinned figuratively to their denim sleeves. Greatest Hits does what it should, laying out the band's career highs on a single platter. First track aside, it sticks to chronological order--something that seems to have fallen out of vogue in the realm of best-ofs--and the distinct voices of tag-team songwriters Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor ensure that things are nicely varied. The disc also underlines their deft balance of song smarts and adult-contemporary radio appeal. Though it's lean at 13 tracks, this entry-level volume should make an ideal one-stop for fans and dabblers alike. --Kieran Grant

Customer Reviews:
not complete.......2004-12-05
It's a good primer for those not really familiar with Blue Rodeo, but the hits are not all here. The glaring omissions are Head Over Heels and Rain Down on Me. I still wonder about the strange decision to open with a cover...
Wait for a more comprehensive set -- this disc is skimpy.
All the hits are here.......2002-02-04
Blue Rodeo's greatest hits package is a good sampling of the band's music over the last several years. It's hard to describe their music (sort of a weird rock-country hybrid), but it's certainly distinctive, and they remain a popular band and live act (in Canada especially). Unfortunately, they are not amenable to radio play, both because of the aforementioned hybrid quality of the music, and because their songs tend to approach 6 minutes in length. If you don't know the band, or are only familiar with a couple of their most famous songs (e.g., "Til I am Myself Again" and "Try"), I would recommend picking this up as a great introduction to the band. If you are a fan of the band, the two new songs on the album are great, and arguably worth the price of the disc on their own merits.
Unfortunately, since this isn't a major U.S. release, it's considered an "import" by Amazon, and therefore it's a little pricey. In addition, the songs that achieve high popularilty tend to have a similar "feel" to them, so the 14 tracks do not have the same variety as, say, the Barenaked Ladies recent Greatest Hits CD.
