Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.
The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Axe Rufus Wainwright, and it would be 5 stars.......2007-06-13
This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.
Yes, it's one of the best albums I own.......2007-06-03
I listened to it over and over and over last year. Such quality all 'round.
Brokeback Mountain.......2007-05-13
The product is what I expected. It arrived on time and in the condition advertised.
A matter of taste..........2007-05-08
I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.
Perfect, just like the movie..........2007-04-21
It is so wonderful, relaxing..if you`re thinking in buying...Just do it!

Wanting to hear the sound of a balalaika!.......2005-10-18
I have not received my cd yet, but I was expecting to receive one with balalaika only, so I am already disappointed. In the samples, the orchestra is so predominate I cannot tell which is the balalaika. Thanks, Violet
From Russia, with Strings.......2004-08-09
The Osipov Russian Folk Orchestra made this fine recording some four decades ago, when the U.S. and the Soviet Union were barely on speaking terms. I imagine that some of the people who bought this record found themselves on FBI or CIA observation lists. Still, it would have been worth it, for the sheer exuberance of the music alone. The performances are bold and exciting, tinged with a hint of danger, and the listener is carried away on a crest of winter sleigh rides through places like Moscow and Vladivostock. Sure, the orchestra was capitalizing on the popularity of Dr. Zhivago, but at least they were able to find an audience. There's a little bit of hiss, given the antiquated recording instruments of the time, but it isn't enough to distract from the music. In fact, it's barely audible. I understand that they have since released a remastered version of the disc, but I'm always suspicious of perfection. One other thing: the cover leads you to believe that this is solely a balalaika show, but that isn't quite the case. There is, in fact, a whole orchestra here, but it is used quite smartly. Those other instruments give the music the air of authenticity, and create a kind of old world mood, but it's the balalaikas that carry the day.
Spectacular.......2004-07-15
This album is not only one of the finest technically, but also musically. It was recorded back in the early sixties with the finest equipment and the finest audio technique ever devised. This has to be one of the most enjoyable listening experiences the listener will ever experience, as is all of the Mercury Living Presence series. We are privilaged to have these great recordings re-made on CD, and this particular one has to be at the top of the list. It will challenge any other recording technique, and it will lift your spirits every time you listen to it!
Nothing beats this for exuberance.......2000-02-06
The sound of massed balalaikas is a real treat, especially when recorded with as much vividness and realism as on this disc. The Osipov Folk Orchestra also consists of bass balalaikas, accordions, flutes, Vladimir Shepherd's Horns, and percussion and they produce quite a kaleidoscope of sound! I particularly enjoy the comedic Vladimir Shepherd's Horns, heard to their most humorous effect in the Tchaikovsky piece, which is guaranteed to make you smile. This recording uncannily conveys the impression of a live event. Of course, the performers deserve most of the credit for this. Their unanimity of attack and sheer exuberance are heartstopping. Even if you think you don't like Russian folk music, give this a try!

simple but amazing.......2006-01-29
The guitar and vocals on this CD will blow you away. Of all of the Catholic Classics CDs, this one is my favorite - an awesome way to learn some of those more traditional songs without a voicy choir.
Surprising, but beautifully done.......2006-01-12
I really expected a more traditional arrangement with organ & choir, so I was in for a bit of a shock right off the bat. The arrangements are relatively simple with one or two voices and limited orchestration. However the effect is wonderful. The primary singer has an unusual high and clear voice, and the harmonies raise goosebumps with their beauty (all I know about music I learned from my highschool punk rock band, so you'll have to listen to the tracks above if my description is unclear).
Some of the tracks are forgettable, but the others are truly outstanding. "Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow" is wonderful, and exceeded only by "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name." The mixture of latin chant with vernacular on "For the Beauty of the Earth/Ubi Caritas" and "Go Silent Friend/In Paradisium" was tastefully done. The performers and arrangers also rescued the otherwise saccharine "How Great Thou Art" and turned it into a genuinely inspiring hymn, although they were unable to accomplish a similar feat with the thoroughly overplayed "Amazing Grace."
So many other people have beautiful renditions of Ave Maria, so the track on this CD barely registers for me. Panis Angelicus is done better on many other disks as well.
Still, if it were only "Praise God..." and "Holy God..." on this CD, it would be worth the price. Truly excellent.
This is the one to get........2003-09-08
Very beautiful and inspiring rendition of some favorite Catholic classics. The most beautiful: "Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow" which fades in the middle into a chant-like revery-inducing song only to flourish again with new-found faith at the end. Second most beautiful: "Holy God, We Prise They Name," which builds in three voices towards the end, one added for each person of the Blessed Trinity. Also noteworthy: "For the Beauty of the Earth," with its mix of Latin and English transitions and blending of Gregorian chant in between verses. Good rendition of "Ave Maria" and "Simple Gifts." A lot of steel-string guitar played strong and true, but not overwhelming the beautiful voice of David Fischer. Fischer accompanies himself on the best tracks, to great effect (especially "Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow").

An underrated GEM - jazz piano trio at its best!.......2005-08-10
This is truly remarkable music from an outstanding piano trio.
After the first listening if this CD I thought it was pleasant ... but nothing special. I found myself a few days later recalling several haunting melodic lines but forgot where I had heard them. I eventually remembered and relistened to this CD and it was a revelation.
This is one of the best piano jazz trio CD I have heard (for taste comparison I treasure all of Bill Evans - of course, as well as most, not all, Keith Jarrett, and some modern trios such as EST, Vassilis Tsabropoulos (Achirana is still the best ever piano trio CD), John Taylor (all of his ECM recordings with Peter Erskine are golden) and the underrated and rarely heard Richard Bierach.
This is Pasqua's best trio recording, with the unbelievable Peter Erskine on drums and the mesmerizing Darek Oles on bass. Don't be fooled by the quiet and polished arrangements, this is deep and thoughtful music. While it may not boil over with loud exuberance, it will resonate in your heart and mind with subtle afterthoughts - now that is musical magic.
There is not a bad piece on the whole set, with originals and standards with originality. Too bad there's no music samples on Amazon but you can find them elsewhere, such as CDUniverse for example.
I can't imagine anyone regretting this purchase.
So beautiful it brought me to tears..........2005-08-02
I love this album because Alan Pasqua is so passionate about his music. Even his improv is constant melodies.
I guess ECM doesn't have a lock on gorgeous piano trios after all.......2005-06-25
Here's a homegrown session everyone taken by the beauty and delicacy of Tord Gustavsen, Vassilis Tsabropoulos, Marcin Wasilewski, EST, and other European piano trios can be proud of. With My New Old Friend, Alan Pasqua has produced a disc that in many ways surpasses the best the Europeans have to offer.
Pasqua, though not that well known in jazz circles, despite his having produced a handful of accomplished discs on smaller West Coast labels and having been a mainstay (on synth!) of Tony Williams' 70s band, here proves that he deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the foremost jazz pianists of the day. For example, it's fascinating to compare his take of Charlie Chaplin's standard, "Smile," with Brad Mehldau's from his recent disc, Anything Goes. Whereas Mehldau brilliantly mines the piece's inherent irony, Pasqua goes for an entirely different feeling, a kind of wistfulness bordering on tragedy, lending the tune an almost unbearable poignancy. Playing the familiar melody with the lightest and most tender touch, he undergirds it with dark, dense, and dissonant chord voicings, creating a mood of shattered serenity and faded love. Combine that with the extremely subtle bass and drum stylings of Messrs Darek Oles and Peter Erskine, and you have a revelatory reworking of a famous standard.
The three other standards, "You Must Believe in Spring," "All the Things You Are," and "Body and Soul," are each handled with a similar delicacy and attention to detail. Indeed, the trio locks in with such a very high level of musical conversation and group interaction that it almost seems as if they've been playing together forever. Pasqua and Erskine have shared the bandstand and recording studio for some time now, but newcomer Oles, fast becoming a mainstay on the West Coast jazz scene, adds an entirely new and welcome dimension.
The six Pasqua originals give nothing away to the standards. It is as a composer, perhaps even more than as a leader and instrumentalist, that Pasqua makes his strongest impression. His tunes have a dancing freshness and lilt about them that both immediately ingratiates and makes a lasting impression. That, perhaps, is the disc's greatest accomplishment: it is not only beautiful, but memorable. One keeps wanting to return to it to recapture the wonderful moods it creates, even as it regularly produces music of consequence--a rare and welcome accomplishment in any category of musical endeavor.
Highest recommendation, and Kudos to Cryptogramophone for getting such glorious music from these veterans.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

I simply love Tiffany's voice...very soulful and wise beyond her years. Too bad she's never been taken seriously as an artist. If you have any doubt at all about her talent, simply listen to the title track. Even after all these years, I still love to hear this girl sing....

Not as great as "Tiffany" but still great........2006-06-09
"Hold An Old Friend's Hand" was realsed on November 21st 1988 and sold 2 million units. It features slightly more mature songs and a very mature 17 year old singer was behind the mic. The only hit from this album is the awesome ballad "All This Time" which hit #6 on the Billboard charts. I thought it was so sad that Tiffany's fans were drifting away from her. This album isn't as great as "Tiffany" but it's still pleasing to the Tiffany fan. It's still bubble gum pop but we have some guitar solos. I was pleased with more synth songs than "Tiffany" but we don't have any "I Think We're Alone Now's" on here but that's okay.
1. "All This Time"- This is an example of the more mature songs on this album. Tiffany has just lost a lover and she doesn't know what to do with "All This Time". Highest chart positon was #6.
10/10
2. "Oh Jackie"- I don't know what to think about this song. I think it might be about a best friend who Tiffany fought with and now her friend Jackie is on the radio. It might be about a boyfriend. It's a great song with synths and strong vocals. 9/10
3. "Hold An Old Friend's Hand"- It's the title song, which I don't see why it didn't chart. Lovely song about a boyfriend who Tiff wants to come back into her life. I think this is a cover version of a Tracy Nelson song in 1974. I love the saxs on this song. 10/10
4. "Radio Romance"- Great song about Tiff wanting her best friend's boyfriend and dedicating a song to him on the radio. She sings " I see you baby, every single day holdin' on to my best friend but ya don't see me, so I make the same request now every single night, goin' out from me to you on the dedication line". 10/10
5. "We're Both Thinking Of Her"- My favorite song on the album, a simple song about Tiffany's boyfriend wanting to leave her for her best friend. 10/10.
6. "Walk Away While You Can"- About how Tiffany's friend is with an older guy and she's warning her to walk away while she can. "Better walk away while you can, 'cause your hearts in control and ya don't understand, your still a young girl, he's almost a man better walk away while you can". 10/10
7. "Drop That Bomb"- Cute song about Tiff telling her fans to go after that boy they want. I think the way Tiffany sings the song is kind of annoying. I think this would do better on Debbie Gibson's "Out Of The Blue". I think this song is the type of song that Tiffany didn't want to sing anymore. I reccomend this one to
Debbbie Gibson fans. 5/10
8. "It's The Lover (Not The Love)"- I've aways liked this song because I thought Tiffany really wanted us to know that there is hope after breaking up with someone. I thought she was there for us when she sang this song. 10/10
9. "I'll Be The Girl"- Another "Drop That Bomb" type of song. This one seems like another lost Debroah Gibson song. I do like the part in the middle where she sings, "I'll be the pillow that you cry on' and "I'll be the laughter if ya ever need a clown". I thought Tiffany was tired of singing this song also. Debroah fans would also like this song. 5/10
10. "Hearts Never Lie" (Duet with Chris Farren)- This is like the "Could've Been" or "Feelings Of Forever" of this album. Chris Farren's voice goes well with Tiffany's. Beautiful. 10/10
11. Overture- Beautiful guitar pieces of "All This Time", "Hearts Never Lie" and "Hold An Old Friend's Hand". 10/10
Overall score: 8/10: Great songs. More mature vocals. Two sound like lost Debroah Gibson songs. Her next album "New Inside" is a totally different sound after breaking with George Tobin. This album is not boring but not as great as "Tiffany".

MOSTLY BORING!.......2004-05-29
I didn't get to hear Tiffany's 2nd album until 1992. I'm surprised I didn't. This album is BORING! I couldn't believe it! Follow up a multiplatinum debut from '87 with this boring set of songs from late '88? Too many bland, pointless ballads that sound like "All This Time" or "Could've Been." As I listened to the album, I dozed off to sleep during the second half. That's how dull it sounded with such flat music with too many sappy lyrics. The pressure to follow a very successful debut might have been hard. But Tiffany sounds directionless and mediocre on a lot of this album. I came off a little disappointed after hearing it.
Won't you c'mon around and hold this girl's hand?.......2003-10-19
The first single, "All This Time" sounds a lot like Madonna's "Crazy For You". The difference is, one reached the Top Five, the other didn't. Her brave face shows in light of an emotional sundering, with no regrets, and full of acceptance that they'll never meet: "The sun still shines, the sun still sets/the heart forgives, the heart forgets." My third favourite song here.
A mixture of synths, string and funky bass, "Oh Jackie" has her asking questions to the title character: "you never meant to let me go", "am I all alone", "tell me I'm not just somewhere you outgrew", where the answers all seem to be "yes."
The title track has her using her scratchy pre-teen Stevie Nicks voice in places. She offers the hand of friendship of someone who's hurt her in the past and she still feels for: "I promise not to throw you/you don't have to stay; I just want to hold you/won't you come on around and hold an old friend's hand." But there are other wise verses here that made her older than her teen years. This merited a Top Five at the very least, but it tanked on the charts. That she's able to convey such emotion at her age then shows a lot of maturity. This ties with another ballad here as my favourite song.
The single "Radio Romance", which is a sung radio dedication, has overtones of 60's Motown pop with a bopping 80's synth beat.
The "her" in "We're Both Thinking Of Her" happens to be the narrator's best friend. The idea here can be summed up in this line: "What's she got that I ain't got? She's got you." Nice fuzzy guitar here, and a rhythm beat reminiscent of Jeff Lynne's production.
"Walk Away While You Can" has a keyboard rhythm like Madonna's "True Blue" about a young girl advised to act out the title because the older man will use her and "your heart's in control and you don't understand."
"Drop That Bomb" has leanings towards the R&B pop of "Let's Hear It For The Boy", except I don't recall Deniece Williams using sound effects of a synth "bomb exploding."
"It's The Lover (Not The Love)" is yet another winning keyboard ballad--she was getting really good at these exhorts those hurt to try again: "Don't give up in time to find/the one who's right will come to you." The chorus is formed by adding "that deserted you" after the title.
"I'll Be The Girl" has funky keyboards like Lisa Lisa's "Head To Toe". There's some comfort when she sings "I'll be the pillow you cry on when you're feeling down/I'll be the laughter if ever you think you need a clown."
"Hearts Never Lie" has keyboards like Force MD's "Tender Love" and is the "Could've Been" of this album, with backing string synths and electric guitar. Chris Farren, her duet partner, sounds like a juvenile Steve Perry. The reconstruction of love is the theme here, be it "start[ing] all over/one emotion at a time."
The "Overture" is a brief acoustic guitar instrumental of the title song theme combined with some bits of "Hearts Never Lie." Fitting, as they are the two best songs here.
Even though Tiff doesn't write any of the songs, the songs are better in maturity and lyrical content, and her genuine voice is an excellent conveyor. An evolution over her self-titled debut. So come on around and hold her hand, or this album--you won't regret it.

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27
This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.
Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04
Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.
Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.
Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28
There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)
Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04
As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.
One Night Only .......2006-07-19
I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

Classic Blues.......2006-11-13
Like all the rest of the reviewers, I was wondering if Chris ever did a follow up. It wasnt made easy when there are other musicians called Chris Anderson. This album is absolutely top class from begining to end. Heres a breakdown.
1. You're gonna need me - A nice slowish Blues number that reminds me of Walter Trout, but when Walter plays in this style, I get bored easy. With Chris, his vocals are much fuller, and the guitar doesnt have to be 100mph.
2. SLow Burn - A mid paced Blues instrumental that again reminds me slightly of the Walter Trout vibe. Maybe it is from the keyboards.
3. Old friend - A southern tinged tune featuring Warren Haynes on Slide guitar. Excellent vibe throughout.
4. One step ahead of the Blues - One of my favourites. A nice slow 12 bar
blues number
5.Crying for my baby - An up tempo number that reminds me of the Allman Brothers Band.
6.Life is Hard - Another emotional slow Allmans styled blues number
7.Aint givin up on love - Another up tempo rocker. ALso reminiscent of the ABB.
8. Trust me - My least favourite tune on the album. The ABB meets SRV?
9. Jakes song - Really nice Southern styled Ballad.
10. WHen will you be satisfied - My favourite. A great rocking blues rockin foot tapping toon. Love the bass-drum accompanyment. Great vibe.
11.One good woman - Another slow paced blues tune with touches of ALbert King.
12.Driving out of the Blues - Another of my favourites. Great rockin, great guitar and as always great vocals. This reminded me slightly of Bryan Adams at his peak when he knew how to rock.
13. Untitled instrumetal - Basically 2 Bottleneck slide guitars for just under 2 minutes. Really cool.
Too big a secret in music.......2005-07-27
I found this cd 7 years ago and have been listening to it regularly ever since. Tremendous vocals, blistering guitar and backed by Gov't. Mule drummer Matt Abst (with cameo by Warren Haynes), this release really grooves. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a sophomore release from Mr. Anderson. He is an incredibly gifted blues musician and while he may be doing a regular gig in the country music field, he truly belongs in the blues genre. I am a big fan of this man and would love to hear other music by him. Also, for those of you who do not know, there is a hidden track at the end, #13 and is untitled. Bottleneck blues instrumental, just amazing. C'mon Chris, give us MORE!!!! Mike in Ohio
What Chris is up to NOW.........................!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-04-13
After reading all the reviews it seems everyone is asking the same question.Where's Chris!!!He's now playing with a group called Blackhawk. Yeah I know it's country, sort of, but it's kickin.Having known Chris for about 15 yrs. now,I can promiss you, it does'nt matter what kind of music he's playin,it's great....also,the guy on keyboards is Mike Koch(he & chris have been together since Molly Hatchet)yes, thats right.Mikes now touring with Dickey Betts Band.Oh,by the way,if you want to check out some of chris's older stuff, just crank up some Outlaws,Now that's goin way back !!!!!!So, if your ever in Nashville, you never know,Chris might just be sittin in with somebody------just listen for the killer guitar man.Hope this helps out all the people that feel the same way I do about Chris Anderson-Theres no such thing as enough!!!!!Oh Yeah,Chris If you read this, come on home and play,we miss it.....BE COOL......SEE YA SOON !!!!!!
A true must for blues lovers.......2003-02-05
This cd is a must for anyone that truely loves the blues. Chris is able to carry you off not only with the sounds of his guitar wrapping around you but also with his voice as he releases each word. My favorite song on this cd is "One Step Ahead Of The Blues",I as many others ,I'm sure, can relate to it. Ever since this one came out I have been patiently waiting for the next one. Pleeeeease we need another one Chris.
Thers only one problem.......2002-05-06
I like everyone else who owns this cd am wearing it out.Does anyone know of any other cd's from Chris. If this guy is just playing backup for some band we are all missing out on one of the best blues guitar players of all time. I guess to sum it all up I would say if you like clean, clean, clean blues this cd is a must.I WANT MORE OF CHRIS ANDERSON. Is ther any more? Someone please answer.

Still singin' those mountain ballads after all these years.......2006-12-05
Country music fans today, just listen to the music and enjoy it for what it is, but did we ever really think about the starts of country music? Who started it? What kind of songs did they sing? Were they any good? Did their children follow in their footsteps and were they sucessful?
So many questions!! This CD is the answer. The first family of country music was the Carter Family, A.P., Sara, and Maybelle of Clinch Mountain, VA. But they were much more than mountain hilbillies who liked to party on friday nights. They wrote songs about lost love, the place they knew and loved, and most of all, just fun songs.
We start off with the legendary. "Keep on the Sunny Side," the Carter's theme song. This song is basically about how if we just look on the bright side of things, they aren't so bad after all. "Storms and clouds will in time pass away, and the sun again will shine, bright and clear."
Hey June Carter fans? Did you know where "Wildwood Flower" came from? It was from the good ol' Carter Family! Actually, it was one of their first hits, probably the most reknown carter family song in the world. About lost love, it's a song you'll want to sing 24/7!
"Worried Man Blues," is my very favorite Carter Family song. It has a catchy tune, and a good beat. The song is about a man who is sentenced to go to prison, but he has no idea what he's done. Filled with fun and laughter, this will become and family favorite.
"My Clinch Mountain Home," tells you alot about the Carter's backaround history. It reflects the carter's lives from "Ole Virginny."
"Foggy Mountain Top," is a great song. It features Sara's yodeling, and Maybelle's great guitar pickin'. This song, like "My Clinch Mountain Home", secretly shares backaround information about life as a Carter as well.
Ah, "Single Girl, Married Girl," the Carter's first hit, and undoubtfully their most sucessful. This is a solo for Sara, and also a solo for her autoharp.
In "My Old Cottage Home," A.P. does most of the singing, which is rare since he usually only did backup. Very similar to "My Clinch Mountain Home," but also very different. It's one of my favorites, so yuo will proabaly liek it too.
"The Valley of Shanandoah," is a very sad song. It tells a story about how a man fell in love with a beautiful girl in the past summer and promises to return to her next year so they can be married. Sadly, when the man returns, he finds that his true love had passed away into the great kingdom above. Teh song may be sad, but it capture your heart.
"Chewing Gum," is a really fun song to sing, and it really helps past the tiem away. A song that Sara wrote when she was a child, "Chewing Gum," features many funny lines that will make you laugh out loud as if you were watching Hee-Haw!
If you buy this CD, it's liek hearing the Carter's story through music. It's truly any country msuic fan's treasure. Be sure to read my other revies for June Carter Cash's "Press On", "Wildwood Flower", "Keep on teh Sunyn Side: Her life in Music, and "Live Recordings from the Lousiana Hayride."
