The Environmental Sounds of Crawford--What Really Happened!
The original idea was to release old recordings that even Rhino wouldn't consider. Everybody and their dog had a project. '60s garage bands, midget copy bands, etc. We were going to call the label DWI Records. Discs with Integrity! Get it??? But as all new ventures begin to splinter over creative differences, we each went our separate ways with our own sub-labels that would be under the DWI umbrella. My personal label became Cavier Madness, a testament to how far I had personally come since the '70s when we all treked to a local theatre to watch a midnight showing of Reefer Madness. Now, I had the label, and the sub label. All I needed was product, and a distributor! I started my own personal crusade to acquire and/or secure the weirdest product I could find. You can't imagine how many people have illegal recordings. Totally unreleasable. I bet over half of the stuff I received was George Jones jamming in his tour bus. But the last straw was receiving a recording--an actual recording--of Hank Williams' entire funeral. The songs, the sermon, the well wishes, the tears...enough. That was the day I decided to forget about the old stuff and record something new, even though my attorney insisted that if I released it as an import, nobody would sue! I was flipping through some environmental discs at Target, when it hit me. The Environmental Sounds of...Crawford, Texas! So why Crawford? After a few listens, it should be obvious. The most out-of-the-way, one-road town...and yet home--second home--to one of the most powerful men in the world. The best part about this disk is that it's totally non-political, and I mean that in a good way. After the election in November 2004, all roads led to Crawford. So, on a partly cloudy day in December 2004, just as all of the gift shops were beginning to hang their Christmas decorations, The Environmental Sounds of Crawford was recorded. When we got back to the studio, I'm not sure if we really thought any of the recordings would be worthy of release. But as we listened, and tweaked, and mastered, it all made perfect sense. This is not just any recording. This is a piece of history. All the sounds of a town that barely exists.Who could ask for more.Nothing has been added or faked to make the recording more interesting. It is what it is, and it always will be. In the '60s I remember Ringo Starr saying that people used to come to "see" the Beatles, not to hear them. And so it is with The Environmental Sounds of Crawford. If you don't want to listen to it, you can hold it in your hand...and imagine!I personally feel that long after all of the excitement has lifted, everyone that somehow manages to own a copy will realize sooner than most, that they are in possession of the first important collectible of the 21st century. Call it the "Pet Rock" of recordings, if you must, but whatever you call it, find a special place to keep it, and occasionally look at it again...like an old high school yearbook. And if you must listen to it over and over again, listen with your eyes closed...and remember when we were young and anything seemed possible.
