4 out of 5 stars Music we all need to hear once in a while........2007-01-04

This album is well put together and I enjoy the old standards. Music is an integral part of our heritage. Often when I listen to this album, I think about what our country has been through and how very, very important it is to appreciate what we have. I spent 3 years living in France in the 60's and I cannot tell you how much all Americans looked forward to going "Home!"

Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars A very good CD.......2005-06-16

If you like a mix of songs and marches very well played, this CD is for you. The voices of the singers are good, the music support the lyrics and it is easy to listen or to sing along. Also, nearby half of the tunes are played by the Band of the Grenadier Guards and for me, this Band is the best band to play Sousa marches and military marches. The precision of the execution is perfect, the sound is lovely and the technical quality of the recording is perfect. When I listen Anchors Aweigh, I always hear the sound of the waves and it is one of the only bands that gives me this feeling. If you have just one CD of military music to buy, you may buy this one; it is a best buy.

3 out of 5 stars Revision of history.......2005-03-27

As usual, "Dixie," "The Bonnie Blue Flag," and other songs of a Southern genre are conspicuously absent. Why not throw in a couple of rap tunes to make this album truly "American?"

5 out of 5 stars Lovely CD--shameful misspelling on the song titles.......2002-11-22

I do not own this CD--though it appears it would be a wonderful album to listen to. I was compelled to write my review because of the misspelling of our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner (as opposed to "The Star Bangled Banner" as it appears not once but twice on the song list). I do hope this error is corrected.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Patriotic Album.......2002-07-20

For all those patriots out there who want to listen to classical patriotic music, then get this album. This has a lot of tracks from yankee doodle march to the Washington post march. Even Amazing grace is here. The orchestras and the chorus here, gave there best performance ever.

Enjoy

1 out of 5 stars Eeww!.......2006-06-19

This is like the music to one of those theme park Celebrate America type shows. The musical arrangements have that hokey, somewhat dated, overly sweet and enthusiatic feel I hate. I thought I was getting the standard versions of these songs but what I got was the cruise ship extravaganza, yuck!

1 out of 5 stars this land is your land.......2006-04-17

to think that "this land is your land" is a patriotic song is laughable at best, however is a common misconception of the song. you'd think that the creators of this cd would research the songs they put on the cd a little more, and find that "this land is your land" is actually a protest song (original lyrics contained lyrics such as "on that sign there it said private property/but on the other side it didn't say nothing/that side was made for you and me", an obvious attack on capitalism".

4 out of 5 stars America's Favorite Patriotic Songs.......2005-09-30

The title says it all.
Good old fashioned "goose bump" music.

4 out of 5 stars Great Place to Start a Patriotic Music Collection.......2002-09-12

This choral collection features a majority of the best known and loved patriotic songs from our country's history. I'll admit I was a little leery of the choral part when I first picked it up, but I've found that, for the most part, it works really well.

It especially stands out on the acappella version of "My Country 'Tis of Thee." It's absolutely stunning. Other fun songs are "This Land is Your Land," which I really wasn't familiar with before I bought this, and a personal recent favorite song "God Bless the USA." I love having the "Armed Forces Medley" on here so I can learn these songs. And the instrumental arrangement on "Stars and Stripes Forever Medley" at the end has me taping my toes every time I hear it.

There are a couple missteps, however. I've heard better versions of "The Star Spangled Banner." I think one reason I'm disappointed with it is that they only include one verse. I love the other verses of our national anthem, and wished they'd included at least one more since they included multiple verses of all the other songs. Also, "If My People" and "God Save America," while find songs, just don't seem to fit here.

Overall, you can't go wrong with this collection. I'm just starting to look for patriotic music, and this has been a wonderful first CD.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Performance and Collection of Songs.......2006-03-29

I am impressed with the quality of the Gramercy Brass Ensemble's performance of these traditional American Patriot pieces.

Beautiful sound, outstanding musicianship, classic yet spirited arrangements, and wide variety from national anthems to branch-specific armed forces hymns.

I would recommend this recording to anyone looking to hear American Patriotic music at its best. A very nice CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Patriotic CD.......2004-02-21

This is a great CD if you ever need or want to have patriotic music. American music played by an American brass band. This group sounds terrific. For those of you unfamiliar with brass band, it is comprised of 25 brass players and 2 or 3 percussionists. You get a rich, full sonority and these guys play GREAT! This CD is HIGHLY recommended to all bras players who want to hear tone quality, timbre, intonation, and more. Band directors would be wise to use this as a model for their students for everything from pitch to phrasing. Everybody else would be wise to pick it up if you like Americana. I know people who use this for their commute because it is upbeat and uplifting. Excellent CD!!!! You may also want to check out their second CD entitled "Christmas Time Is Here". Also highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

5 out of 5 stars Simple passion for all to appreciate........2006-05-24

The man's passion for the ideals of individual liberty embraced by our nation is sung in a wonderfully simplistic and yet beautifully effective manner for all ages to understand. Intelligence is all you need to appreciate Lee Greenwood's emotions and lyrics. Education can never be a substitute for that.

1 out of 5 stars God Help the USA--or at least the citizens who listen to this drivel.......2005-10-15

My review of this album and Greenwood's work in general--it's sophmoric music over childish, jingoistic lyrics--and as a result it's very effective propaganda. The type of folks who are most prone to becoming taken in by nationalistic rhetoric are exactly the types this music appeals to--economically challenged types with little education or cultural awareness. Considering recent U.S. elections, Greenwood was savvy in marketing to such a group.

If you require bad music to reinforce your pre-existing stereotypes, xenophobia and blind allegiance to your nation, I highly recommend buying this album.

5 out of 5 stars Dan Akroyd at his finest.......2005-07-20

I was the biggest fan in america of the USA for Africa group. I had heard about them and figured the album would be great. There had to be a great deal of excitement when you had the talent of Michael Jackson, the Pointer Sisters, Steve Perry, Cyndi Lauper and Bruce Springsteen on the same track. Well, something happened on the way to heaven. Dan Akroyd absolutely steals the show on this album. I remember seeing the "We are the world" video and being blown away by Akroyd's performance in the video. I knew he was funny, but he was just on his game on this album. Bravo sir Dan!

I remember being moved by the whole USA for Africa experience and put together a benefit album called, "East Douglas county for North Omaha". What an all star lineup. You had me on vocals along with Kevin Seitzer, Kroll, Meat, Jeff Benson and Julie Powers. Burns played the most gutwrenching keyboard riff ever heard on an album and members of meat's family piped in some truly old school polka. It was a great song for a great cause. We raised $3.78 for North Omaha. We made a difference.

5 out of 5 stars I used to love this song!!.......2004-06-06

I was 8 when this album came out. My parents have it on tape and we used to listen to this all the time. I would like to get the CD because the tape is starting to go. I remember watching the video segement and the making of it because we have it on video somewhere. It was for a great charity and needs to be released again. The singers of today should record it again and do it for charity.

5 out of 5 stars We Are The Hits (that never were).......2004-03-07

First of all: DON'T buy this CD just for the title song (Unless you need it for a special project) AND, don't buy it to help starving people in Africa. That boat sailed a long time back. For some reason, this CD has been Out Of Print for ages, so the proceeds will go to the reseller who has to charge a MINT for it because of its scarcity. So, WHY BUY IT? Bruce Springsteen, Steve Perry, Chicago, Tina Turner, Huey Lewis, Kenny Rogers, The Pointer Sisters and Prince. If you're a fan of any of those artists: the extra songs unique to the collection are among the best they've done. They're all superstars trying to one up each other. So, they're great. Each song could have been (and should have been) a hit single. Bruce Springsteen's first official (non seasonal) live release with the E Street Band "Trapped" is a great take on a Jimmy Cliff song. I can't get the tune out of my head. Steve Perry's contribution blows away his solo hit as well as most Journey tunes. Tina Turner, Kenny Rogers, Huey Lewis & The News and The Pointer Sisters were all hot at the time too, and their tracks show it, too. We Are The World is a triumph of Quincy Jones and and an apparently still on top of his game, Michael Jackson, trying to squeeze the kitchen sink into one song. They did it, and it has worn out its welcome for most listeners, but all in all, this is a great collection anyway because We Are The Hits you haven't heard.

3 out of 5 stars Charity rock or one big Pepsi jingle?.......2004-02-28

USA For Africa's We Are The World was a well-intentioned helping hand for Ethiopian famine victims. To that aid, an all-star ensemble of artists comprising a cross-section of American artists, mostly pop, rock, and soul, sang the title track, initially solo bits with artists like co-writers Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Rogers, and Stevie Wonder, before they all sung in unison. While this song helped me identify this unhip guy who was who, back in the day when he was struggling to choose what to listen to, in retrospect, this sounds more like a seven minute Pepsi jingle that went to #1 on the charts and won the Grammy for Best Single.

As for the other songs, most don't come close to the usual oeuvre of the artists concerned. Most of all, what relevance do they have to the issue of starvation? Take off the "We Are The World" song and this might as well be an odds and sods albums of tracks by well-known 80's artists unreleased on their respective albums because they weren't up to scratch.

"If Only For The Moment, Girl" by Steve Perry, is nothing special and something that might've been a B-side on any of his Street Talk singles. And the Pointer Sisters' inject a muted dose of their sassy hokum on "Just A Little Closer." Call this one "I'm Not So Excited."

A live version of Bruce Springsteen's "Trapped," originally by Jimmy Cliff, follows. Keyboard fills and rhythm guitar are heard while the Boss sings the verses, then Max Weinberg's drums and the guitars rise to a crescendo as Springsteen sings the chorus. One of the better songs here.

Canada's own joint artist collaboration, billed as Northern Lights present "Tears Are Not Enough," which follows the same initial individual vocals followed by a joint singalong. Loverboy's Paul Dean does guitar, Bryan Adams collaborator Jim Vallance is on drums. Adams, Dan Hill, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Geddy Lee, Anne Murray, Aldo Nova, Jane Siberry, future Heart-producer Dalbello, Bruce Cockburn, Corey Hart, Mike Reno, John Candy (!!), and Burton Cummings are among the vocalists. This is shorter and has less carbonation than "We Are The World."

The only track that bears a direct bearing is Prince and the Revolution doing the sober "4 The Tears In Your Eyes." It's a simple song about Jesus and his healing, preaching, and helping others, helped by the vocal harmonies by Wendy and Lisa. If I was to put it on one of his albums for sound consistency, it'd have to be Parade. A different version of this ended up on his The Hits/B-Sides compilation.

Peter Cetera was still with Chicago when they did "Good For Nothing", this decent-sounding light rock number about feeling slighted for not receiving thanks for helping some people out seems contradictory for the purposes of giving on this album.

The studio version of "Trouble In Paradise" by Huey Lewis and the News can be found on their debut album. This is a live recording in February 1985 complete with Tower of Power horns and some great sax by Newsman John Colla.

After making her comeback with Private Dancer, Tina Turner does a song that wouldn't have been a C-side song, the plodding "Total Control." Kenny Rogers does the brisk "A Little More Love," again a worthy song, but lyrically, nothing to do with charity.

As the grandaddy of 80's charity rock albums, We Are The World definitely deserves that accolade. However, some things make this effort a bit suspect. The line "we're saving our own lives" has an implication that they're singing about their own salvation. Surely none of the artists here would experience starvation or meet those Ethiopians who are starving?

And a cogent critical observation Jackson Browne made also makes a point: "That's the problem with North America. We think we ARE the world." In other words, geopolitical bias.

Despite its charitable intentions, this effort mutes the usually leftist stance in rock by rightist corporate yuppie materialism.

5 out of 5 stars What are they thinking?.......2006-09-30

As a music teacher, I'm wondering about the very critical reviews about this CD. What ARE they thinking? You are supposed to MARCH to these songs - not run to them! I hear great intonation and suitable tempos to this music. The phrasing is crisp and the rhythms precise. As to taking liberties with 1812, even the master composers did similar practices. The music "flows." This is a patriotic album that you will enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Must Have for Every Patriotic American.......2002-04-12

This CD is a great collection of classic American tunes. Listening to it really makes you proud to be an American and it puts you in a patriotic mood.

I strongly disagree with some of the other reviews here and I found the quality to be great, along with the selection of songs. BUY THIS CD. YOU WON'T BE SORRY!!

1 out of 5 stars Marching music to yawn by?.......2002-04-04

I completely agree with the two pans by the reviewers above -- the arrangements are completely inappropriate for the music. These pieces should be sprightly and upbeat -- instead they are schmaltzy and lethargic.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Buy this Album!!!.......2001-11-03

What could have been a great album of patriotic
songs is completely ruined because of brutal
editing and may I even say deception. I almost
never return a CD, but I returned this one. And
sadly because I found the sound quality very good.
Both on the outside track listings and on the inside
pullout, there is no mention that the tracks are
excerpts. Most leave out entire strains or repeats.
But the worst offense has to be the "1812 Overture".
I was excited to be purchasing an album with this
on it. But what I got was not even excerpts from
this piece. "excerpts from" usually implies that
a specific movement is presented. But this piece
is totally mutilated. Three measures are played,
five measures are omitted, two more measures are
played, etc. If Tchaikovsky were around he'd have
good cause for a lawsuit. Pleeeaasse, don't support
a product that does injustice to the composers and
does not truthfully describe the product's contents!!!

2 out of 5 stars Wake me up when it's over... (YAAWWWNNNNN).......2001-06-20

Though the first thing that I noticed while listening to this CD was the poor tonal quality of the recording, what I was most disappointed with was the overall lack of tempo in nearly every piece. To quote my husband, "It's supposed to be a marching band, not a strolling band!" Also a few of the pieces are really excerpts and not the entire piece, not good excerpts at that.

Product Description

Here's another offering of The Ozark Mountain Daredevils' classic albums from the 1970's A&M Records Catalog. "Don t Look Down", originally released in 1977, is a part of the ongoing reissue series of the group's works by New Era, and finally after many years of demand it is available on CD for the first time as a U.S. release. By the time this album was recorded The Daredevils had undergone some personnel changes through a couple of the founding members moving on to pursue their solo careers. With their replacements, and the addition of extra players, the group had grown to 8 members, producing a varied sound and feel in the music. Thus following the path that always created interest in them. On this disc are three bonus tracks that have never before been released on any of the group s earlier albums. Fans of the group will delight in the fact that they have never heard these songs before. The music on this disc, like all of The Daredevils self-styled, rootsy material has withstood the test of time and offers the same listener appeal as it always did. With the reissue of this classic album on CD the fans, old and new, will have a chance to enjoy what has made The Ozark Mountain Daredevils one of America s most original and enduring bands.

5 out of 5 stars Electric country rock at its very best.......2007-02-02

The Daredevils' misfortune was that "Don't Look Down" came out a couple of years too late. Country rock was already going out of fashion, and many of their peers faced the same destiny: too rock for rednecks, too country for rockers...

Still, the music on this album is second to none. "Don't..." is not only the band's possibly finest work ever, but it also rivals the country/southern rock masterpieces like "Desperado" (Eagles), "Hurry Sundown" (Outlaws), Toby Beau's debut, Poco's best works - and so on.

Many original Daredevils fans may have found "Don't..." sounding a lot more modern than the earlier albums. It's also fair to say that this rocks more than any of their earlier or later works. Comparison to Poco's equally mighty "Under The Gun" isn't too far-fetched, although the albums are otherwise quite different in style. Despite the modern sound and less country-oriented overall style, there are all the Daredevils elements present people have always loved, plus some quite new ingredients.

The album starts with mighty country rocker "River to the sun", one of band's all time greats. What follows is a equally stunning: "Crazy loving", "Snowbound", "Love makes the lover", "True believer"... and, of course, the ending fiddle instrumental "Stinghead". There is no single weak or even average tune on this album. Every single song here could be put into any Daredevils' "Best of..." compilation. The variety of styles is also breathtaking, from mountain country to great electric rock to beautiful acoustic ballads to... well, anywhere. Several of the tracks might well have been major hits, in luckier conditions.

The lyrics, as always in this band's case, deserve a special note: some are truly hilarious ("Backroads"), some a bit mystical ("True believer"), some just great observations of a winter's day ("Snowbound"). They all tell a story worth listening to, which is quite a rare feat of any band.

As the production is also flawless with great sound, there's really nothing to complain about. It doesn't get much better than this. Listen to yourself. The songs just get better with time...

Every song, every word and note, it all makes sense. Good for the soul.

5 out of 5 stars Another Ozark Classic.......2005-08-24

With Don't Look Down The Ozarks released another classic album in 1977. This is once again country/pop rock at it's very best.
Any album with a song like "Giving it all to the wind" on it is a classic. Everytime friends of mine who don't know The Ozarks hear this beautiful Larry Lee song they are completely blown away by it. The rest of the songs are far above standard country rock quality. Why these guys weren't as popular like The Eagles is still one of the great mysteries of the 70's !! There are 3 bonus tracks on this cd version: "Sweetwood" is one of them and is one of the best ballads ever to have been released by The Ozarks. Talking about quality control.......this track was never released until now !!
So once again.........go out and buy this album !!!

PS; Some more good news; The CBS album from 1980 will als be released by the good people of New Era in november 2005 !

Greetings to all Ozark fans,

Martin from Holland

5 out of 5 stars Live and learn. .......2007-03-19

Since CD's weren't commercially available in 1972 except as a Certificate of Deposit, and Amazon generally posts the release date and track listing of the album for sale, I'd have to say, "tough luck" to the reviewers who didn't review their purchase prior to ordering. Unfortunately it's a 'read the fine print' world we live in now, and no I'm not an attorney ;) Since I was only just begun (born) in '72, I don't have old memories of her work. I'm generally not even a fan of country music. If anyone out there has ever been to a drag show, "The Happiest Girl..." has just enough camp and spirit, as well as the Dolly Parton-esque mountain music thing for one of those crazy queens to really make a statement. And nobody I have ever seen could pull that off as well as Lucinda Holiday, hamburgers and all!!! Who would have ever known I'd discover this little slice of history and widely unknown gem 30 years later? Buy this album and, above all, be sure to make it a Skip-a-dee - doo-dah - day.

5 out of 5 stars Can't believe it.. !.......2006-03-27

I found my husband's favorite oldie and bought two in case something happens to one.. now he has the Luckiest Girl in the Whole USA.. in his car and at home.. I happen to be lucky also !! Thanks

1 out of 5 stars NOT THE ORIGINAL!.......2003-12-10

As much as I love the music of Donna Fargo, this is *NOT* the original "Happiest Girl in The Whole USA" album that was originally released in 1972 on DOT records. It's a good thing the track listing was posted here, otherwise I might have been fooled into thinking I was purchasing the original version. Fortunately, I still have my old vinyl copy, though after 30+ years, it's getting pretty tired. I don't understand this concept of "remaking" old albums and re-issuing them on CD. I feel this is deliberate deception on the part of the label to mislead the public. This is becoming quite a routine for some reason. Thankfully, those of us who remember our old 8-tracks and LP records aren't easily fooled. The ORIGINAL track listing for "Happiest Girl in The Whole USA" is as follows:

1. The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA
2. Manhattan Kansas
3. The Awareness of Nothing
4. Funny Face
5. A Little Somethin'(To Hang On To)
6. Daddy Dumplin
7. How Close You Came To Being Gone
8. Society's Got Us
9. It Would Have Been Just Perfect
10 Johnny B Goode.

That's the way I remember it folks, and that's the way it should have been reissued. I'm sorry, but either release the album in its entirety without butchering it up or omitting songs, or just don't even bother. I'm sick and tired of wasting time and money on deceptive and sly business practices on the part of the music industry, and until such time as it cleans up its act, I'll continue to treasure my old records and tapes.

2 out of 5 stars Another misleading title.......2002-07-23

This is NOT Donna Fargo's 1972 album, "Happiest Girl in the Whole USA". Rather, this is a compilation album with several of her more popular songs. If you want a greatest hits collection, there are better ones available. If you want the original album, as I did, you're out of luck, at least for now. Not a single one of her original albums are available. If you want to know what songs were on the original "Happiest" album, that information is available on her web site. The review guidelines do not allow me to post the url, but it should be pretty easy for you to guess.

This has become a fairly common marketing trick. Labels will release compilation albums, but give them the title of an original studio album, leading fans to purchase the wrong product. You have to be very careful to not be deceived by this tactic. Usually I am, but this time I got burned. Hopefully writing this will keep this from happening to some of you. A few of my other reviews are of similar deceptive albums.

5 out of 5 stars It makes me realize how happy I am to have loved my husband........1999-06-12

I have shared this song with many and they all become "hooked" on it. It came out at a time in my life (I was pregnant), and so in love with my husband. (After 24 "happy" years he passed away.) It was my song and I've been singing it for twenty five years. My niece (17) recently fell in love with it and is playing it for her friends. The lyrics still apply today. I highly recommend it. I need a CD now, my tapes are old.
