Album Description
For a band that's been compared to Joy Division, Leonard Cohen, Wilco, and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, the National sure sounds a lot more like the Czars or Uncle Tupelo on this sophomore album Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers. The band focuses on slow atmospheric songs, it's when it kicks out the jams that the music is the most compelling.. With so many influences rearing their heads and ample musical chops in the bag, the National might not be masters of any one genre, but it creates a fine amalgam nonetheless. Brassland. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
one of my Top 3.......2007-05-03
The first song is low...talks about personal weakness and how to hide your feelings from another. Mentions strangers ("you're just another one of them"), death and unknown men.
The second is completely different, in tone, in tempo. Full of energy & screams. Talks about being lonely ("she's lonely, man"), ghosts, haunted ("by an important life you could have led").. OK, same doleful content, but a lot more upbeat and forms a beautiful contrast to the first song.
I highly recommend this band because it's not typical Alt Country. No. Beautiful violins--it's more like a combination of continental classical mixed in with heartfelt American art-nouveau. Allez-y et achetez-le.
bought Sad Songs...after to listening to "alligator" 1,000 times........2006-11-12
If you have listened to "Sad songs..." once it may not click, but it'll whet your music curiousity. I have to say it, although cliche, it is The National's "The Wall". Pieced toghether song by song with a purpose. One of my best listening experiences ever was playing "sad songs..." and "Cherry Tree" at high volume in my living room with a nice glass of Sapphire and ice.
I laughed, I cried, and caught a good buzz...
You should buy this album if you like true musical talent and thoughtful, intellegent lyrics. This album reverberates on another level.
Buy this album, or Cherry Tree, or Alligator, love it, then go see them live.
absolutely amazing.......2005-11-27
Songs 2 through 9 are some of the best stuff The National has done. Slipping Husband lodges in your head and refuses to leave. I kind of wish it had been the first track on the record. Cardinal, Track 1, has 3 am feel that seems misplaced as the first song but who cares this CD has Husband, Murder Me Rachel, 90 mile water wall (best title ever) etc...
Masterminds.......2005-10-28
Excellent band. Saw them live somewhere in europe a couple years ago and wasn't impressed. Man have they evolved. Buy it, become a better person.
A great discovery.......2004-12-13
The title of this album is misleading. It could be called Funny Songs for Angry Lovers ....or Dirty Songs for Sad Lovers....lyrically, the songs explore different sides of relationships and there is a lot of levity..... song titles like Trophy Wife and Sugar Wife make me think the album title may be intended as a joke. Though who can say. Whatever the case, this is an interesting, intense album.
There are quiet acoustic and electronic ballads like the frst song Cardinal Song and one of the last, Patterns of Fairytales ....but also totally blistering, raging rock songs like Murder Me Rachael and Available. I am partial to the latter....but I think they wouldn't be as effective without the quiet, beautiful moments. As far as influences, there are some hints of americana in the Wilco sense in spots (like 90 Mile Water Wall) but also Joy Division in other songs like Available. I was turned onto the National by a friend who is also a fellow Nick Cave fanatic, but I can't really compare them to any specific Cave era or album. I am more reminded at times of Leonard Cohen and even Silver Jewsand Wilco.

As the line in the opening track, "The Peanut Vendor", says: "Fifty million monkeys can't be wrong." And back in 1971, the purchasers of this debut LP (originally The King's Singers: By Appointment) found overwhelming proof in its vinyl grooves that a refreshingly new quality product was on the market. Soon the unlikely lads known as The King's Singers were all over television screens in the company of the likes of Val Doonican, Shirley Bassey, and Nana Mouskouri--also, of course, performing bucketloads of serious repertoire in concerts. For those who rushed to buy the original, this re-release is a real trip down memory lane, the excellent sound enhanced by the extra detail and color in the CD transfer (though, please note, there's less than 35 minutes of music). "Cherry Ripe," "Scarborough Fair," and Bacharach's "Wives and Lovers" are here, along with lots more, performed with that familiar mix of vocal perfection and effortless poise and complemented by the discreet contribution of the Gordon Langford Trio. --Andrew Green
Customer Reviews:
King's Singers Debut.......2007-01-12
I am a real fan of the King's Singers, and this album was very well received. I loved it. Recommend it to anyone.
Thirty years old: still terrific.......2003-02-02
We have loved this album for 30 years. We are so pleased it has been released on CD. It was originally part of a very small collection of gramophone records, and is now one of hundreds of CDs, but it is one we keep playing and playing.
The singing is flawless, the songs are wonderful and the arrangements are very clever. What more could you want?
It includes The Kings' Singers theme song, "What Kind of Things (do the Kings' Singers sing?)" which is a humorous description of the variety in their music and in their vocal ranges.
Other highlights are:
Summertime, which is quite close to the orignal sheet music, carefully arranged for 6 voices.
The folk song Scarborough Fair adheres quite closely to the Simon and Garfunkel arrangement, whereas The Oak and the Ash and Blow Away the Morning Dew are special creations for the group by Gordon Langford.
Time Was and The Green Leaves of Summer show the group's ability to create a wonderful mood through slow, soulful singing.
Highly recommended. Timeless music.
This is vintage King's Singers!.......2001-06-09
In the thirty or more years that the King's Singers have been going, they've released dozens of CDs. And as much as I adore some of their recent recordings, I still regard this first album as some of their best work.
This performance is both of a very high quality and is also a magnificent showcase of the variety of things the King's Singers sing. I doubt you would find many other recordings which contain works by Tchaikovsky, Gershwin, Bacharach as well as traditional folksongs from the British Isles and America - especially not recordings that are of such a high standard. The vocal harmonies are just delicious, and the Gordon Langford Trio also provides a brilliant accompaniment and gives songs like The Peanut Vendor, Shenandoah and Summertime a delightful relaxed feeling. Then there is also the lighthearted and whimsical What Kind of Things - a song all about what sort of music the King's Singers sing!
I was going to give this CD four stars rather than five (mainly because I hesitate to give top marks to anything ever - I know, I'm picky), but in the end I honestly couldn't think of anything which would justify taking a star away. It's worth all five!

A Canadian musical crossbreed, the Clumsy Lovers combine traditional instrumentation with shifting time signatures and rock & roll adrenalin. Within the sprawling expanse of Smart Kid's 15 tracks, the Vancouver quintet surveys a wide range of musical territory, offering surprises at every turn. Bluegrass banjo meets reggae rhythm on "Bobby Banjo" and "London Bridge," while "Okay Alright" combines the new-wave bounce of Blondie with harmonies direct from the Beach Boys. On the syncopated, fiddle-driven instrumental "Cock of the North," the band manages to sound both Celtic and Caribbean. Much of the interplay displays the sort of energy that has made the Clumsy Lovers a popular live attraction, but "Better Days," "Don't Worry," and "Not Long for This World" show the maturity of their songwriting and command of the studio. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Smart Choice.......2006-05-24
How do you explain this album. How do you explain the Clumsy Lovers. Long a fixture on the Irish Festival circuit, with the release of Smart Kid, the band shows a wide range of musical stylings.
For celtic purists, "Coming Home" and the instrumental "Cock of the North" are for you. I have heard a lot of comparisions to Bare Naked Ladies, based in part the the Claire Dane's reference in "Bobby Banjo", and to a lessor extent "This is Clumsy Love". Bluegrass fans will love "People I Have Been Meaning To Thank." "Coming Home" reminds me of "Already Gone" by the Eagles. Likewise I can see "Don't Worry" comming out of a younger Bruce Springsteen, and "Rockefeller" would be at home on a current song list. Speaking of the boss, if you are a fan of We Shall Overcome, the Seager Sessions, you will love this group. Just when you think the band might get to "pop"centric on "Smart Kid" or "Better Days" Andrea's fiddle and Jason;s banjo pull you back into familiar territory. We do have a new version of "London Bridge" which after appearing on Barnburner, Still Clumsy After All These Years, Live, and the bootleg cocnert from Denver, still manges to find a new sound.
After not getting lead vocal time on After the Flood Andrea gets to shine on "Okay, Alright" one of the funnist songs never to make it on the radio. It almost feels like a follow up to "Single Girl" from Under the Covers, only the trials of the workplace are the scence rather than the pitfalls of marriage.
Fianlly, my favorite. "Not Long For This World" is a lovely ballad by Chris dealing with impending loss. Andrea plays a delicate fiddle to start, envoking a feeling of mourning. Then Trevor's basic guitar cords and smooth vocals tell a story of approaching death and a joy for life. It is a love song too. IF you have ever been with someone you know would be taken form you far to soon, you will relate to this. The bridge between the second and third verse feels like we are in church and the congregation rises lead by the strenght of Gord's drumming. The final verses is the bittersweet moment with loss of life, the promise of something better, and plea that "this one time, let me be right". Jason's banjo and Andrea's fiddle playing lead us out and provide fitting passage as we leave the world of The Smart Kid and move on to the next stage in this exciting band's career.
I love the lovers.......2006-02-22
I was recently introduced to their music through a few free downloads. Needless to say, I fell in love. Good album, fun music, and talent beyond anything you here on the radio today. The Clumsy Lovers are definitely worth a listen.
Wonderful, Deeply Original Energetic Music.......2005-11-19
I caught the Clumsy Lovers last year at a Celtic fest and they blew the house away. I've bought some of their earlier albums and they didn't capture the quirkiness and energy. Smart Kid does. It would be hard for me to have a favorite song since I love the whole album. There's Celtic, bluegrass and Jamaican influences way down but its all Clumsy Lover's music. Fantastic musicianship, great singing and wonderfully crafted songs. When I bought this album a couple of months ago I was listening to it all the time and still play it a lot. By the way, I like this album.
Smart Kid Review.......2005-07-08
Great album A must buy for any Clumsy Lovers fan or for anyone that loves fun music
They just get better and better..............2005-07-08
I've become a big-time Clumsy Lovers fan over the last year & a half or so. My first introduction to their music was live in concert. It was amazing! So good that I've seen them a total of 6 times now (last time was just last week). As good as they are, the recorded music doesn't quite do them justice, but they do just get better with time. I have nothing but praise for this CD.

Eleni makes covers seem all her own.......2007-06-08
On this album, and the jazz EP "Maybe, Yes" it's hard to divine what Ms. Mandell wrote and what's a cover. Because to her own tunes and well-chosen covers alike she brings her unique brand of soulfulness, sultriness, wisdom, strength and vulnerability. I'm haunted by "Kingsport Town" and "Iowa City." I also love "I've Got a Tender Heart" and "You're All Bad (and That's Why You've Been Invited)".
Now I love this album, as I love all her albums, but if you're new to Eleni Mandell I would not make this my first album. This is great, but I think "Miracle of Five," "Afternoon" and "Thrill" are better intros. On those albums nearly every song is a GEM. All her albums are chock full o' pearls, but those 3 are all all-out lustrous from beginning to end. Oh, who am I kidding, "Wishbone" is great too. Hell, they're ALL good. Look, just get them all. Treat yourself! Believe me, you're gonna end up getting them all anyway.
fantastic country disc........2007-02-24
i love this cd. this is one of the most listenable country discs of the last decade. eleni mandell's vocals carry this material perfectly, her phrasing is divine. the instrumentation is subtle and tasteful. 12 songs, each one a gem, from slow torch songs to catchy uptempo melodies. get this disc and have a better life than the one you are having without it.
What it says it is, but what's the point?.......2004-01-02
It's hard to really understand why Eleni has made an album of traditional country songs. Her artistic worth surely lies in a collision of styles, adding up to a stange and original leftfield hybrid. There's nothing remotely leftfield about this album. Maybe that's the point. As an album, as a straightahead country album, it's quite good. And it has a handful of excellent songs. But as a fourth instalment of the Eleni Mandell musical vision? It makes no sense when considered that way. But then, perhaps Eleni doesn't care that much about the evolution of her music. She made a country album because she loves country music. However, I think she has probably alienated alot of her loyal fans by doing so. Would a Tom Waits fan put up with the great man making an album of country music? Probably not. Eleni's last album, Snakebite, was her best and most extreme, and suggested she may move even further into leftfield territory. But now this confounding change of tack. In a way, her wilful disregard of what is expected, is to be admired. In another way, it's hard as a music listener not to shake one's head and wonder at what's going on. She has the freedom to make whatever music she wishes. But does this mean that she actually should? This album is very valid, in that it makes one question whether one should expect anything at all from a favoured artist. Whether it's wrong to want an artist to pursue a certain path over another. Like when Phil Ochs, at the start of the seventies, started doing covers of Buddy Holly. His fans reacted badly. Personally I wish Eleni had not made a country album, because country has been done to death. She does not contribute anything to the genre that hasn't been contributed before. I sincerely hope that this is a one-off project, that she is not now a country artist. If the next album she makes is more of the same, I won't buy it. Loyalty only stretches so far. Eleni is an original talent, and has the ability to continue to make original, offbeat music. Whether she does or not, is entirely her decision.
I can't get these songs out of my head.......2003-11-19
I saw Eleni Mandell in New Orleans at the Mermaid Louge under swooping cars above. She came on stage, just her with her little guitar and her bassist, and showed us what a great performace should be. Nevermind that Tulane Radio SHOULD HAVE gotten us in without a cover. Nevermind the really, really bad bands before her. She was great.
So I got the CD. At the time I was listening to a lot of Kelly Hogan, who has an angelic voice (as you allready know). Eleni, as I call her, is a cousin of Kellys musically, but a differnt peach as well. She has soul. She has a great taste. She knows how to write and sing a song.
She said on stage, probably a joke that she repeats often from up there, "I always say nobody should ever cover Tom Waits songs or this one." Then she sang a beautiful rendition of It's Raining. Even if you aren't a True Lover, you might like this Country.
Classic country for the new millenium.......2003-04-26
Excellent musicianship, top-quality production, fantastic performance. Eleni Mandell has a voice perfectly suited for the "music of pain," and she wrings a lot out of it here. The instrumentation is blissfully simple and never distracting; a perfect companion for Mandell's spare vocalizations. If you have ever mistaken a Garth Brooks tune for something by N' Sync, but know old Hank Williams and Patsy Cline tunes by heart, this is an album you'll appreciate.
Grab Country for True Lovers, K.D. Lang's Shadowland, and Neko Case's Furnace Room Lullabies, and you'll be set for a whole evening of two-stepping and crying in your beer when your best friend steals your girl, and your dog drives off with your truck.

I truly, truly love you........2006-05-29
The Four Lovers were an early incarnation of the Four Seasons. They had one chart single back in 1956, "You're the Apple of My Eye", which managaged to reach #62 on the national charts. This CD collects all 25 songs they recorded for RCA Records (all in 1956), plus six alternate takes. The group released five singles for RCA, plus an album that didn't include any songs that were released as singles. This is solid mid '50s rock and roll. It sounds a lot like the Four Seasons, but with a '50s rock sound, and Frankie Valli didn't use his falsetto voice as often on these recordings. Very enjoyable early rock and roll, although not as good as the Four Seasons classics that they started recording six years later.
Frankie Valli's Early Years.......1999-12-31
This CD is guaranteed to please any Frankie Valli fan--now you get a chance to hear what he did before his first big hit with the Four Seasons, "Sherry". If you like this CD, you might also like "Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons: The Fantastic First Years", which has most of the early Frankie Valli tracks that are not included here.

A Good Find.......2000-02-10
WXPN of Philly turned me onto Mr. Nichols (and a ton more great singer-songwriters) and I really enjoy "Lovers Knot". It is a great CD to put on when you're reading the Sunday Paper in a quiet house near a roaring fire.
"Sugar Creek" reminds me of old James Taylor.

This guy is fantastic! check it out, you will not be disapointed. I can't discribe it, just to damn good to pass up. I heard "as the rain" on DMX and fell in love with the voice behind it. I ordered the CD on amazon.com and the whole damn thing is the best.
Jeb Loy Nichols is Amazing..........1998-12-29
I really enjoy Lovers Knot. I got turned on to Jeb Loy Nichols through the group Okra All-Stars that he is in with some other alt-country guys like Dave Schramm and Ricky Barnes. Check them out if you like Jeb!!
A good find!.......1998-08-16
We caught this guy as an opening act for Joe Ely at The StageCoach in San Juan Capistrano. Though we'd never heard of him, his band was tight - and we really enjoyed everything we heard. Went and got this CD the next day - a great mix of musical styles....a pleasure to listen to.
This is the "Real-Deal" Highly Recommended!.......1998-04-30
I first heard Jeb Loy Nichols on our wonderful NPR station (WCBE) here in Columbus, OH. They had Lover's Knot as a "featured album of the week" and Jeb Loy stopped by and played live in studio as well.
The songwriting here is just superb - fusing folk, funk, country, reggae and americana styles into a beautifully crafted CD. Put this CD in your player and leave it there.

Customer Reviews:
The highest quality performance.......1999-03-13
The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?
