5 out of 5 stars The real thing.......2007-04-13

The Pine Leaf Boys are the genuine article: this is real Cajun music, not just Cajun-flavored pop. The use of accordion and fiddles makes for a wonderful sonority, that is edgy and soulful at the same time, and the singing, most of it in that wonderfully twisted French that Cajuns speak, is just as perfect. There are plenty of zydecko bands out there, who draw from this music, and fuse it with other sources. But the Pine Leaf Boys offer the real thing, straight up, or as I usually tell the bartender, "neat." Une bonne collection, mes copains!

4 out of 5 stars Great modern-day Cajun music.......2007-04-01

Fans of Louisiana cajun music will dig this, another fine album from this up-and-coming young ensemble. Heartfelt and lively, they bring new vigor to this old style... Lots of great French-language originals from fiddler Cedric Watson, too. Recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Good But Not Great.......2007-05-22

This is an enjoyable CD, but I strongly recommend you purchase Putamayo's ZYDECO instead. It contains some greats like Geno Dalfose's "Bye Bye Mon Neg" and the Creole Zydoco Farmers' "Creole Farmers Stomp," which you won't be able to SIT and listen to. It also has Queen Ida's "My Girl Josephine," which is a classic.

Zydeco's Greatest Hits does contain some good, standard cuts like Buckwheat Zydeco's "Ya Ya," and another cut of theirs,"Turning Point," which is great. I also like BooZoo Chavis' "Uncle Bud." For the most part, though, the Putamayo disk will keep you hopping.

You may also enjoy Putamayo's LOUISIANA GUMBO which contains a variety of cajun, southern rock, and zydeco.

4 out of 5 stars Good for a new Zydeco Fan.......2007-03-09

I had only heard Zydeco music in cajun resturants. So when I needed a zydeco cd I had no clue what to buy. I just kinda chose this one blindly. It turned out to be wonderful! It wasn't too deep so for a person like me who was only exposed to it very little, I didn't feel like "this is way over my head!" My co-workers loved it too. I bought it for a work function. We just played the cd over and over and by the end of the day, people were singing along and everything. Really cool for if you just want to expand your music knowledge and taste to include Zydeco music. I good find indeed!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT Cajun music!.......2006-08-03

Great upbeat music. Good representation of zydeco music. Very enjoyable. I bought two!

4 out of 5 stars Very good...........2005-12-16

Wow, Amazon, thanks so much for all the information. For people who actually enjoy knowing what they're getting, here's who plays what:

1 Ya Ya - Buckwheat Zydeco
2 Give Him Cornbread - Beau Jocque and the Zydeco Hi-Rollers
3 Your Mama Don't Know - Nathan And The Zydeco Cha Chas
4 French Rockin' Boogie - Geno Delafose
5 My Toot Toot - Rockin' Sidney
6 Hot Tamale Baby - Clifton Chenier
7 Turning Point - Buckwheat Zydeco
8 Uncle Bud - Boozoo Chavis & the Magic Sounds
9 Broken Hearted - Zydeco Force
10 Follow Me Chicken - Nathan And The Zydeco Cha Chas

Now that you can see who plays what, any zydeco fan should be able to comfortably identify all of these artists, and see that, while the songs are not NECESSARILY zydeco "hits", the artists are all zydeco stars. Other than the sad exclusion of Keith Frank, this is a pretty excellent album for its price.

4 out of 5 stars Unbeatable for the price........2001-06-07

When I saw the low price on this CD, I wasn't sure if the quality would be great. Turns out "Zydeco's Greatest Hits" is definitely danceable. A good mix of some of zydeco's masters, including Boozoo Chavis and Nathan & the Cha-Chas. I only wish it had some Rosie Ledet as well. The sound quality is good.

Album Description

The Bayou's barnstorming bandleader Buckwheat Zydeco is back with his first studio disc in eight years, and he'll be on tour all over the country.

Jackpot! combines soulful original tunes, inspired playing and singing, and the trademark exuberance that's made him the world's best-loved zydeco artist, and has earned Buckwheat Zydeco the sobriquet "the world's greatest party band." There's plenty of Buckwheat's signature accordion, and for the first time ever Buck specifically features his soulful mastery of the horizontal keyboard on a three-song Hammond B3 "Encore featuring Organic Buckwheat."

Jackpot! opens with the strutting "I'm Gonna Love You Anyway" before swinging into "It Must Be Magic," a tune that leads into a string of great new songs. The sweetly funky title cut and the slinky guitar breaks of "Rock, Boogie, Shout!" are due for road tests at festivals, theaters and clubs across the U.S. and Canada during the months ahead. Zydeco fans can expect more of the rootsy boogie that fuels "Come And Get Yourself Some" and the Creole French "Old Times La La" on the album, two of nine accordion-led originals on the disc.

Jackpot! takes a surprising and very cool side trip as it goes home with a trio of tunes offering a 18-minute encore presentation of "Organic Buckwheat," reuniting Dural with his first love, the Hammond B3 organ.

Dural's venerable keyboard playing stands up to anyone playing the B3 today -- whether it's the wailing blues of "Buck Goes Downtown," the jazzy tour de force Jimmy Smith tribute "Buck Goes Uptown," or on the anthemic reggae of the finale, "Buck Goes To Trenchtown." The Hammond organ only brings Buck back closer to his roots - as he first gained renown playing the Hammond in zydeco king Clifton Chenier's legendary Red Hot Louisiana Band in the 1970s.

Just heard this cd over the weekend, amazing. This is a phenomenal cd, anyone who loves zydeco needs this one in their collection. Really gets you going and you just want to get up and dance.

5 out of 5 stars Must Buy For Those Who Like Real Home Cooked Music!.......2005-06-07

I pre-ordered the CD after catching Buck live in NYC thinking it would be a decent album. I was wrong. This is a great album and a must buy for long summer car trips, sweaty dance parties and to remind oneself that not all music comes artificially flavored. Must buy.

First, just cue up the 11th cut- Buck's Going Uptown. Invoking the late great Jimmy Smith at the start, Buck just rips the Hammond B-3 on an up-tempo funky soul infused jam. Is there any better summer music than this? Does anyone else play this stuff anymore? The only problem is the song only clocks in at 6:45. Can we have a real Jimmy Smith half-side version next time? By the way, very tasty guitar solo on this one.

After that gets you in the mood, go back to the album opener for some Grade A Prime zydeco. No clunkers here, every cut is great. Standouts for me are track 6 and 9 as well as the opener. Of course, the last three tracks with Buck on the Hammond are superb.

Slim Harpo, Dr. John the Night Tripper, Tony Joe White … one can't help but flash on those illustrious practitioners of swamp music, be it blues, rock, or pop, when listening to CC Adcock's latest effort. As with all of the above, Layayette, Louisiana's Adcock makes music that's dense, damp, and malodorous as a Baton Rouge bog. What's so welcome about Lafayette Marquis it that it arrives decades after the heyday of the Excello sound and the rock & roll offspring it inspired, and long after the genre needed a shot in the arm. From the rhythmic opener "Y'all'd Think She'd Be Good 2 Me" through the voodoo creep "Slanoshotz N' Boom-R-Angz" and the gently rolling closer "Between the Lies," Adcock is at home with swamp sounds as a bayou trapper. It helps that he has the connections and inclination to enlist a few savvy vets to help out, including the late producer Jack Nitzsche (the reverberating "Stealin' All Day" is the last track he helmed), but it's pretty clear that Adcock is right at home with these grooves. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars The most sophisticated 'swamp music' ever made.......2006-09-21

This CD smokes. It's got a lewd, hip-shaking boogie-beat, atmosphere thicker than Louisiana fog, production that emphasizes the beat, molasses-thick lyrics that don't aspire to profundity --- yeah, "Lafayette Marquis" is the good times music you've been looking for. The late-night alternative to Bryan Ferry or Barry White. The worthy successor to Dr. John, Z.Z. Top and John Fogarty.

C.C. Adcock hails --- that's the word for guys like this --- from Lafayette, Louisiana. That's Cajun country, west of Baton Rouge. Average rainfall: 61 inches a year. On rainy days in his childhood, little Charlie Adcock learned to play guitar. By 14, he had a band --- Boogie Chillun' --- that he remembers as "a rhythm and blues Menudo." He played with Bo Diddley and toured with Buckwheat Zydeco. Good connections got him a record deal, and a much-praised first CD.

A decade passed, and now we have "Lafayette Marquis." Well, he is a nobleman --- at least in his clothes. He likes custom-made suits and expensive shoes (the reptilian pattern on the CD cover is from his boots). But when he talks about his songs, he's no gent. One song, for him, is "a score to a cock-fighting scene --- it's about a couple of oilfield, renegade, ruffneck podnuhs of mine."

How fun a guy is C.C. Adcock? Listen to him talk about his home town: "On any given night, you can start out in the country with some food, drop in to a Cajun dance hall and watch the old folks glidin' round the floor, then put the top down and jump back into town and rock around to the new sounds of some up-and-coming-cats. Then, you can cross the tracks and bump at a Zydeco disco, have a few Crown & Sevens and -- at the end of the night -- head south to another Parish where they stay open all night, and you can boogie `til daybreak in front of a classic swamp-pop jukebox and still make it home in time for Mass. And that's not even a fairy tale night."

This CD is like the souvenir of such a night. A monster of a car --- an old Mercury with a sleek V-8 under the hood. A VFW hall you almost can't see through the foggy night. Women in cotton dresses, men in jeans. Beer in bottles. And on stage, a powerhouse band, playing tight songs about loose females. A crazy fiddler gives the boogie some Cajun twang. The drum sounds hollow as a barrel. The bass player drives the beat like a steam engine. And above it, C.C. sings lyrics that are family-friendly only because they're too slurred to hear.

Get the party started.

This is a great collection of songs for people who are from New Orleans or for people who love New Orleans and miss it. It has almost all of the classic Mardi Gras themed songs, and it flows really well.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best.......2007-05-10

No contest = if you buy one Mardi Gras CD - this is it. Orginal recordings and great original sound. This is the one Mardi Gras CD that I give to friends - where ever they live. Listen to the samples, if that doesn't do it for you, God bless you.

5 out of 5 stars good all around .......2006-07-07

Enjoyed this cd very much.. It had more cajun than i expected and was glad.

4 out of 5 stars Love That Jazz Man.......2002-02-15

This is a very delectable sampling of many rockin' New Orleans Jazz flavored tunes. Some of the songs are performed by such rock n roll legends like Dr. John and The Neville Brothers. Others are from more soulful artists like Madri Gras Mambo by the Hawkettes. Sill others are percussion driven like Little Liza Jane and Meet De Boys On The Battlefront. And of course there are plenty of great brass and keyboard arrangements to keep any jazz fan happy.

Whereas many of these artists were not legends in the annals of music history, their contributions to this disc are certainly very good. This is a very appropriate party tape for ayoung hip crowd especially if your are anywhere near the Bayou. Goes nice with some Crawfish, Jambalaya, and a beer or two.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome and fun.......2000-01-23

This has been the star of several parties for us. A real good time mood maker. Great for Mardi Gras parties! Buy it, you won't be sorry.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of a Master.......2003-11-07

I guess I'm not qualified to evaluate whether this is the best collection of Chenier's work, but this is a great collection. I was surprised that Chenier is a pretty good blueman, but the Zydeco numbers are the best, and that's why most people want to listen to. I suppose alternating the blues with the zydeco balances the collection.

The interview at the end of the CD starts to meander, but I was surprised to hear Chenier say he invented Zydeco mostly to distiguish himself from other musicians, rather than some compelling need to create a new musical form.

There maybe a better collection out there, but this was good enough for me!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Collection!!!.......2003-07-23

A great introduction to the best singer/accordionist in the history of Zydeco, this collection features a mix of Chenier's classic Zydeco standards, like "Ay, ai, ai" and "Zydeco Sont Pas Sale" as well as some great blues numbers. One of the strengths of this title, as well as a weakness, is that longtime Chenier producer Chris Strachwitz set out to highlight Chenier's blues abilities, which are considerable. Chenier was an outstanding blues singer, but the price for the inclusion of each blues number is the exclusion of a Zydeco masterpiece (although the listener never feels shorted, as there is not a bad cut on the whole album). I suppose it is a six of one, half a dozen of the other, with the high level of blues actually adding another facet to the King of Zydeco (if the quality were any less, then I might complain, but as it is, it's really perfect).

Overall, the album is outstanding: some of the best Zydeco music ever made, interspersed with top-notch blues and topped off with a fascinating interview, which, along with a previously unreleased version of "Zydeco Sont Pas Sale" make this interesting even to a long-time Clifton Chenier fan.

Too Much Fun, C.J. Chenier's fourth album as a bandleader, is the best of the four, and more closely resembles his dad's (Clifton Chenier) records than anything else being released these days. In the liner notes, C.J. declares that he plays "real songs," not "this new type of zydeco ... where they just play one riff over and over and shout some words." This knock on Beau Jocque may be unfair (Beau Jocque does as much with one riff and a groove as James Brown once did), but it does signal C.J.'s devotion to his dad's song-based zydeco. C.J. co-wrote four of the songs, recycled three of his dad's and added such inspired choices as the calypso standard "Man Smart, Woman Smarter," Z.Z. Hill's blues standard "Down Home Blues" and Fred Koller's Nashville novelty number "Give Me Some of That." Guitarist Harry Hypolite is still on hand from Clifton's great band, and the younger musicians make the catchy hooks fit comfortably in the dancehall grooves. What really separates this recording from the zydeco pack, however, is C.J.'s singing. Not only can he nail a juicy melody, but he can bring out the story in the lyrics. He tells the woeful tale of all the "Bad Luck" he suffered until he met the right woman with a perfect blend of humor and sincerity, and he delivers the romantic ballad, "Richest Woman," with the raspy, gospel-soul fervor of a Solomon Burke. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Too Much Fun is Really Good Fun.......2005-09-02

If you like Zydeco, if you've been to Louisiana, if you love to dance or you just want to be happy then you'll enjoy C.J. Chenier. He is one of those musicians you discover in some small club and you wonder why he hasn't appeared on Saturday Night Live or one of the nightly talk shows.

This is just as the title says! It has slow music. It has upbeat music. It makes you happy and puts you in a good mood! The accordian is the "KEY"! If you close your eyes, you think that you're in New Orleans.

5 out of 5 stars Hand Clappin', Toe Tappin' Fun...and Lots of It!.......2000-06-20

C.J. Chenier, son of zydeco legend Clifton Chenier really shines on this disc. Too Much Fun is exactly right! You can't help but have fun, singing and dancing along to this disc. These are songs to fill the dance floor. It has a mix of both fast cajun-style songs, and slower, more 'traditional' blues songs. Backed by the Louisiana Red Hots, Chenier's smooth accordion playing changes the mood of each different song. Chenier's solo on "Richest Man", one of the slower songs, is very impressive and original. Quickly became my favorite Zydeco album, and I bet it will become one of yours, too.

Labels run the inherent risk of trivializing or marginalizing a region's music when they attempt to create a compilation. And yet Putumayo, which has made a musical-lifestyle name for itself by producing a bundle of these types of collections, does itself mighty proud with Louisiana Gumbo. Drawing from various statewide sources and time periods, Gumbo celebrates rather than appropriates. Merging blues, jazz, Cajun, and Creole influences along with country-inflected rock, R&B, and piano in the styles of boogie-woogie and fast-pumping Ferriday chording, this group of selections is a magnificent representation of some of Louisiana's smartest and tastiest offerings. From zydeco king Clifton Chenier to ivory tickler James Booker and Tipitina regulars the Neville Brothers, Gumbo is served up dirty, dark, and delicious. Husband-wife duo Carol Fran and Clarence Hollimon rear back to holler and hammer through "Door Poppin'," Eddie Bo puts bad-ass funk and swing to "Piano Roll," and Johnny Adams's "It Ain't the Same Thing" is as fine as swamp-rompin' R&B gets. --Paige La Grone

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good........2005-12-13

First of all, I have to vent and say that calling this album "Louisiana Gumbo" was a total copout.... Referring to Louisiana as a "gumbo" of cultures is possibly the tritest and most worn-out way to refer to the state, and it gets older and older every time I see it. There must be more creative and original ways to name an album.

That said, this is a pretty good album. The songs are mostly New Orleans-style, there are a couple of Zydeco cuts but no real Cajun songs; a little more diversity would've been nice, but seeing what a butcher job Putumayo did on their "Cajun" collection, maybe I should be thankful they didn't try (their "Zydeco" collection is really wonderful, though!).

If you love New Orleans music, though, you'll be thrilled. This album makes for a nice primer for those who aren't familiar with the music at all, as well. It's a nice one to have in your arsenal, for sure.

If you want a really thorough and complete Louisiana collection, consider picking up Doctors, Professors, Kings and Queens: The Big Ol' Box of New Orleans instead, it's much more of an investment, but it's a much higher-quality (and much larger) collection.

5 out of 5 stars What a 'sleeper' !.......2004-01-12

I don't remember buying this CD, but I certainly remember the first time I played it. It is a fantastic collection of Louisiana Blues and Zydeco. Particularly like 'Festis', but really all of it is good.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2001-06-06

This is a wonderful collection of blues, soul and R&B and zydeco from New Orleans and the bayous of Louisiana. And a great introduction to lesser known artists who really deserve to be heard, like Charles Sheffield. But of course there are also the well known artists, such as the Neville Brothers and Clifton Chenier. This album is guaranteed to get your feet tapping. The 24 page booklet includes an essay about Louisiana and it's music, and a page devoted to each song and it's artist, and photos.

5 out of 5 stars As Good As It Gets...........2001-06-06

Hot & Spicy, Tasty & Fulfilling.....just what gumbo is supposed to be! First heard in a little local boutique, I was shakin my shimmie from the first song on and just HAD to buy it! Makes me wish I were strollin down d'bayou or scoffing up some of Tipatina's finest right now. I've bought several copies to give as gifts (some weren't all that excited until they gave it a listen; now those people are turning others onto it). I've given a couple other zy CD's a try but like the man says, "It ain't the same thang".......buy it and enjoy the Big Easy in your own easy chair.

5 out of 5 stars Crazy for Gumbo.......2000-08-25

I heard this CD in a gift shop in Lewes, DE, and found myself dancing in the aisles. It is as much blues as what you might think of as traditional cajun-style music. It reminded my friend and me of Etta James, but with assorted artists and great blues stylings. I can't wait to have my hands on my own copy!

Amazon.com essential recording

Having won unanimous praise as a high-water mark in the zydeco and Cajun traditions, Bogalusa Boogie should have a place reserved for it in any collection of American music. It's got enough driving energy to hold its weight against any rock recording of the mid-1970s, when it was recorded in one day. It's got a trawler full of zydeco soul, too, riding a percussion wave built from the King of Zydeco's brother Cleveland Chenier's rub-board and Robert St. Julian's lag-time blues drumming. Leading the Red Hot Louisiana Band from behind his brawny, always-on accordion, Clifton Chenier charges through "Ride 'Em Cowboy" with devil-may-care abandon and then slinks into a chilled blues on "I May Be Wrong," riffing his accordion off the sax and guitar in splendid contrast. Chenier never sounded better on record than here, and for that fact alone, this is a must-have. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars The King of Zydeco.......2007-01-02

I got this record back when I was in school when Clifton was still burning down the house on Saturday nights down here on the bayou. You couldn't help but be taken away by the backbeat groove of this band. Zydeco was initially the black mans cranked up cajun music. Nowadays, it can be heard all over South Louisiana in various forms.
But here is the man who really put it on the map and it still sounds as good today as it did thirty years ago. Just listen to the contemporaries around the South who still move to that beat.

5 out of 5 stars Great listening!.......2003-12-22

My first and favorite Clifton Chenier recording. Very approachable music even for the uninitiated. I agree with a previous reviewer that if you only try one zydeco CD, this should be the one. Clifton is absolutely "the man" when it comes to hard rockin' zydeco accordion music. If "Allons a Grand Coteau" doesn't put a smile on your face, I don't know what will. This is a killer recording and should be in everyone's collection. Don't pass this one up!

5 out of 5 stars Vas-y Clifton! (Go Clifton!).......2000-05-19

This is the ultimate zydeco album and with good reason. It's loaded with non-stop party music that's quick to capture the spirit of the genre (and its geographical importance) with incredible power, passion and soul. The album initially earned top reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone and became an essential title. The ensemble performance is superb: Paul Sénégal's guitar, Cleveland Chenier's rub-board, John Hart's tenor sax, Joe Brouchet's bass and Robert St.Julian's drums all assist and add weight to Le Roi's accordion work. All these cuts are downright classic, too! Check out "Allons A Grand Coteau", "Quelque Chose Sur Mon Idée" or "Ma Mama Ma Dit". It's guaranteed to cure your blues and get you snappin' in no time flat. Remarkably, this music has aged so little since it first appeared on (originally) LP and on CD. It's immediacy is stunning, its performances sharp and the production still solid (the album was originally recorded in 1975). It's why Clifton Chenier (and it's pronouced Shay-nee-ay) ended up being crowned the King... Want only 1 zydeco album? Get this. But, believe me, you'll want more and more and more once you listen to this great disc!

5 out of 5 stars Ride 'Em - Right on!.......1999-09-13

"Ride 'Em Cowboy" alone would be worth the price of the CD, but this collection has many winners. Highly addictive! To know Clifton Chenier is to love the CD. Not to know him would be shame.
