The bluegrass bandwagon continues to roll in 2001. This collection attempts to capitalize on the breakthrough success of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. Drawn from Rounder's rich catalog, the 19-cut sampler of female singing, fiddling, and picking extends from an era when women were a novelty in this male-dominated music category through the popular crossover ascendance of such contemporary artists (and O Brother favorites) as Alison Krauss and the Cox Family. Harmonies from the likes of Rhonda Vincent and the Stevens sisters soar toward the heavens, while the earthier strains of Hazel Dickens and Ginny Hawker are more reflective of the music's hardscrabble roots. Though Wilma Lee Cooper's "You Tried to Ruin My Name" has all the subtlety of a hog-calling contest, such rawness is about as real as this music gets. --Don McLeese

Love it!.......2007-03-08
The voices are clear and you can actually hear real instruments! There isn't one processed song in the bunch. My kids and husband love it as well. We can actually all listen to it together and I don't have to worry about explaining certain things to the kids.
This Bluegrass CD is Excellent!!!!!!.......2005-07-25
There are 19 tracks on this CD and with the exception of 1-2 songs, this may well be one of the best bluegrass CDs I own. What a buy! Eight More Miles with Laurie Lewis, Claire Lynch, Lynn Morris and Rhonda Vincent steal the show here. I have been a lover of bluegrass for over 25 years and this CD is a must have for everyone.
Lacks the Cohesion of her Brother.......2003-10-12
The collection of songs on "O Brother" was made very deliberately, with a wonderful ear toward a "comprehensive" overall sound. But there was no such brilliant and strong guiding force at work for "O Sister", which is essentially a compilation of various female Rounder artistes.
Don't get me wrong - I like many of the songs included here, but they don't always blend together in the best way.
I haven't yet heard a superb compliation collection of female bluegrass artistes, but if you want to hear an excellent and cohesive collection of Rounder artists, buy the 2-CD "Hand Picked: 25 Years of Bluegrass".
wow.......2003-09-27
I was just thummin' through some free downloads when I ran into this cd and thought I would give it a try. thinking nothing of it I started playing them. after listening to the samples rour times I decied to get it for myself. the songs are equally catchy up deat and addicitve. the banjo is a beautiful insterment which the cd contains a lot of is old time sound. if you like bluegrass your collection wont be complete without this cd I imagin the frist one is just as good.
Phony Bluegrass.......2003-03-29
If this is Bluegrass then I will have to stick with greengrass.
My impression is that they failed with rock or whaterver. Music such as O'Sister will destroy real Bluegrass. The CD that I purchased went to the garbage can where it belongs!!

Customer Reviews:
Plenty of R-E-S-P-E-C-T for Bonnie and ALL Blues Women!.......2007-01-06
An earlier review disses the producers of this CD for not showcasing Bonnie Raitt. While it's true she's not "on her own" here, she does a song (singing, playing slide guitar) with Maria Muldaur on the "Contemporary" side (CD 1) that's truly wonderful. I'd bet my thumbs that Bonnie wouldn't have it any other way, lest her fame overshadow the lesser-known blueswomen heard on this recording. In addition to Queen of the Blues, Bonnie's also known as the queen of payback, making sure others get (in many cases long-overdue) attention, often sharing the limelight (like her live duet with Sippie Wallace, who wrote and sang "Women Be Wise" long before Bonnie ever set foot on a stage) and playing/singing on innumerable recordings by other musicians - like this one!
Not enough respect for the Queen of the Blues.......2006-02-01
I own a blues bar, and feel qualified to say that the producers have effectively snubbed the one woman who has done more for woman in Blues than any other for the last 35 years -namely by not show - casing Bonnie Raitt on her own- her vocals, slide guitar and songs have inspired all of these artists - at least Susan Tedeschi acknowleges that -
I shall NOT be playing this in public, out of respect to Bonnie.
The "Chicks" Can Play ... And Sing!.......2005-12-21
What's so nice about this set, especially disc 1, is the sensational singing and playing of many unknown Women of the Blues. Although a huge blues fan and a big collector, several of the performers I had not heard of, such as the Lara Price Band, Alice Stuart and Carolyn Wonderland. But I have now, and they are sensational! I immediately went out and bought a cd of Stuart and Wonderland and Beverly Watkins. This is a big time gem of music. SENSATIONAL. Under $15.00 at most places, so, so worth the money. Have a quick listen to the samples and you'll be hooked and off to the store.
nice selection.......2005-12-20
CD 1 is the electric or "contemporary" cd with deborah coleman, joana connor, ana popovic and 12 more. CD2 is the acoustic or 'traditional CD" WITH RORY BLOCK, SUE FOLEY, JO ANN KELLY and 11 more. No matter how deeply you're into the blues, there's going to be some artists and songs that are new to you and you'll probably like more than one artist you never heard of before.
Sue Foley provides liner notes and has a song on each CD.

Customer Reviews:
A Good Collection Of Some Great Female Singers.......2006-06-04
I am a very big fan of pop/rock female singers. This compilation sure brings together some of 2004's biggest females. All the songs are well chosen for a classical sounding CD with some heart-filled ballads and some melodic rockers as well.
Beautiful: I'm not a big fan of Christina but this song changed my view of this dance/pop singer.
Intuition: Jewel is truly one of the most amazing singers in the world. This isn't my favorte. 2 Become 1 would fit better.
I'm Like A Bird: This is Nelly's best song and one of my favorites on here. It's well-written and upbeat.
Are You Happy Now?: I LOVE Michelle Branch. This is her best hard core break up song. It's really rockin'.
Thank You: This is a beautiful ballad and I never get tired of it.
Overall, this is great and worth the money.
Doesn't deliver.......2005-09-19
Expected a powerhouse; disappointing; it's too bad really; it could have been great
Great C.D. Full Of Truly Talented Women!.......2005-07-18
Although I feel they could have put a few more other female singers on here, for there are so many other women greatly talented as well, this c.d. does pluck out from the category a few true gems that shine in today's world of music.
1) Christina Aguilera- Beautiful (4/5)
Good- sounding song, the lyrics are great but I personally don't like Aguilera too much. She sings these female- empowered songs and then at times is not exactly the best role model for women. Makes no sense to me.
2) Faith Hill- Cry (5/5)
I consider this the best Faith Hill song and I know many will disagree, but I know many others will agree. This song is strong and very moving. I love it.
3) Jewel- Intuition (4/5)
Well many hate Jewel these days because of this new sound of hers, especially her original fans that were there for her when she merely sung with her guitar. Yet I guess she likes herself in this pop/ dance mode now and she doesn't really sound too bad either way. She has better songs than Intuition though, such as Standing Still, which should have been the song they put on here instead of this one. Still an enjoyable song nonetheless.
4) Nelly Furtado- I'm Like A Bird (5/5)
Amazing song, the lyrics I can very much relate to. Nelly isn't very much spoken of anymore, I assume her other c.d. didn't sell too well, or maybe she herself is plagued with the one hit wonder spell, and Like A Bird was just too big for any of her other songs to top. I don't know, but this is indeed a great song. I've always loved it.
5) Kelly Clarkson- Low (5/5)
One of Kelly's best songs, very catchy and her vocals are shown strongly in this song. Being the first American Idol she had definitely needed to prove herself on her first album and she did, including this smoking hit. Her second c.d. that I own holds a lot of songs that sound like this one, and so her second c.d. can sound a tad dull at times, but has a few smoking hits as well.
6) Alicia Keys- A Woman's Worth (1/5)
I can understand why they placed Keys on here, for she is widely praised, but honestly I never liked Key's music. There are so many other women behind a piano that I believe produce better songs. I think mainly though I just am turned off by her sound, I don't like it too much at all. And her lyrics are a tad cliche. But I know a bunch of others will love her on here, just not me. Personally, if it was my choice, I would have put Vanessa Carlton in the number six slot instead- to me, Vanessa Carlton is an amazing pianist and vocalist.
7) Dido- Thank You (4/5)
Great song, but not Dido's best. I love how she has a different sound and I have both of her albums so I know that she has a lot more powerful songs. Yet Dido is a smart choice to have on here for she is one of the best female vocalists out there.
Michelle Branch- Are You Happy Now? (5/5)
Yes I am happy now with this song! Lol. Michelle Branch has always been one of those female musicians that turned your head. Plainly at first called a girl with a guitar, she proved she is talented beyond her years, producing hit after hit, including this one from her second c.d. I heard she is no longer going solo anymore though, but will be singing with another woman. That's a shame, but who knows maybe it will be a good combination. This is a good rememberance though of the power Michelle held in her solo years.
9) Alanis Morisette- Thank U (10/5)
What I consider the best song on here and the real reason I bought this c.d. in the first place. Alanis has been a true mark on the musical world for women, and has inspired so many women to belt out their frustration to the audiences, and I couldn't be more of a fan her than I am. This is one of Alanis' best songs ever. Everyone loves Alanis angry, and now she has made an album where she has calmed down a tad, so now she is no longer under the spotlight too much, but I say she still sounds great. Great choice for this c.d. is this song definitely.
10) Sarah Mclachlan- Adia (4/5)
I am not a major fan of Sarah Mclachlan, I just never got into her too much, but Adia is a very plesant song to hear from her. She is obviously talented, and that is why she has such a strong cult following. I think this was a good choice to have on here.
11) LeAnn Rimes- How Do I Live (4/5)
A good song as well. I used to love hearing this song, the lyrics are sweet, almost to the point of sickeningly though. LeAnn though is another talented female artist and this is a widely popular song.
12)Cher- Believe (5/5)
I've always loved Cher's Believe song. It's probably more of the sound in the song but it's very catchy and upbeat. Cher has been around a long time but she deserves recognition, she worked probably as hard as any other female singer to get her title over the years.
13) Lisa Marie Presley- Lights Out (1/5)
Another female singer that I assume has a strong cult following but to me is not the best female singer out there. I can think of a few other female singers that could have filled her position I feel that are a lot better for the position, but it's not my choice. I never liked Lisa's music too much, nor this song.
14) Bonnie Raitt- I Can't Make You Love Me (3/5)
Eh...not too bad of a song, kind of nice, but nothing powerful. LeAnn Rimes has a better ballad on here. I don't know too much of Bonnie for her style of music is usually not on my radio stations, but this song isn't too bad, not very memorable though.
15) Cherie- I'm Ready (4/5)
Very upbeat song by Cherie, a girl once dubbed a young Celine Dion. Although I don't exactly agree with that, Cherie does have some vocals on her worth recognition. Instead of this song though I think they should have put Older Than My Years on here, a song that shows more strongly Cherie's vocals. But still a nice song to hear.
16) Natalie Merchant- Kind and Gernerous (5/5)
You know I remember hearing this song a long while ago and hardly paid attention to it, although I did find it catchy. Now I hear it on this c.d. and I just love it and can't believe I didn't love it sooner. I've known of Natalie for awhile but didn't give her chance. After hearing this song though, I am going to check out more of her stuff for she sounds like a very talented woman and her voice is like Dido's, different, but actually a breath of fresh air to the music world. I am glad they put this song on here great choice.
17) Rachael Yamagata- Under My Skin (4/5)
Rachael I just started to know with her single Worn Me Down, and that was a catchy song, and another reason I bought this c.d. was to hear another one of her songs. This song did get under my skin, for it is indeed catchy, in ways even more catchy than Worn Me Down. I'm glad they put this one on the c.d. too.
18) Heather Headley- I Wish I Wasn't (1/5)
This song sounds a lot like a bunch of other songs I hear on the radio everyday so no I don't like it. And the female's voice is nothing to specialize, it's an average voice. This whole song is a dime a dozen. I could think of so many others songs to have put on here instead of this one.
Toni Braxton- Un- Break My Heart (4/5)
I've always loved this song, this woman's voice is a lot more stronger and worth hearing. Toni Braxton is a woman singer worth recognition, and this song too is very popular and very moving. Good choice.

Excellent album of female singers! .......2004-12-05
I think that this was a great idea to put the hottest female singers, from the popular to the underrated, on one album! And they succeeded. There is a power ballad rock driven dominance on most of the album, but a few uptempo numbers, like Cher's fun dance number Believe to change it up a bit. I like the ones with Cher, Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Bonnie Raitt, Natalie Merchant, Heather Headley and others. The album does focus more on women's themes in terms of the lyrics, but the feelings are more universal. Truly entertaining musically.

Yes, a real country singer.......2007-01-04
I have always loved Chris Ledoux for singing about what country music should be, but I have found another favorite in Royal Wade Kimes. He has a real country sound and the subject of his songs is similar to that of Marty Robbins. I have even corresponded with Mr. Kimes via email; how many of your favorite artists have you had any contact with? Seems like a great guy!
A great, unheralded singer.......2006-11-07
Royal Wade Kimes is a real country singer, easily surpassing all the fluff on country radio. He sings old-fashioned, true-blue country music, and his voice is amazing and unique. If there were any justice in the music business, he'd be a star.
Real Music!.......2003-02-12
It's great to be able to tell who you're listening to, and to be able to tell that the good sound you hear is natural talent and not just computer enhanced, studio music. This is really good music and you can tell it comes from the heart.
DUET WITH GARTH BROOKS IS FABULOUS!.......2002-09-25
THIS CD IS THE MOST UNIQUE SOUND I HAVE HEARD IN AGES. THERE ARE SOME INCREDIBLE SONGS AND ROYAL WADE KIMES HAS A VOICE LIKE I'VE NEVER HEARD. IT'S REAL, FRESH AND INTERESTING. THE DUET WITH GARTH BROOKS IS A REALLY GREAT SONG AND THESE TWO SOUND GREAT TOGETHER. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE WHO LIKES WESTERN MUSIC, KIMES OR BROOKS. IT'S ENTERTAINING!

Amazon.com essential recording
Before these 1960s recordings were made, the impact of women on bluegrass was virtually non-existent. Molly O'Day and Wilma Lee Cooper had forged some success, but Hazel and Alice were more interested in the dual harmonies of the Stanley Brothers. The pair's unrefined, passionate, seamlessly intertwined harmonies leave a lasting impression, and their sound often owes more to traditional country than bluegrass. Supported by mandolinist David Grisman and fiddle legend Chubby Wise, the pair attack the songs of Bill Monroe, the Carter Family, the Stanleys, Delmores, and Louvins with fire and conviction. Dickens originals such as "Won't You Come and Sing for Me," with four-part harmonies, and the playful "Cowboy Jim" display her deft songwriting touch while her raw mountain tenor rivals that of Ralph Stanley. --Marc Greilsamer
Album Description
When Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard recorded these songs in the mid-1960s, bluegrass music was dominated by male performers. They selected their favorite songs and arranged them for a stellar group of sidemenbluegrass legends Lamar Grier, Chubby Wise, David Grisman, and Billy Baker. Their widely admired performances made them role models for future generations of women in bluegrass. The 26 tracks have been remastered, resequenced, and newly annotated by the performers themselves. Includes Long Black Veil, The One I Love Is Gone, and I Hear a Sweet Voice Calling. "Hazel and Alice blast out vintage bluegrass-country soundsongs with fierce, raucous energy." -Time Magazine
Customer Reviews:
Essential bluegrass album; the real stuff.......2007-03-07
I used to have an old tape of these that a friend made from his LP's; I cannot believe it took me so long to replace it with a CD. What was I thinking?
Hazel Dickens is a national treasure. This is an absolutely wonderful CD and a must-have for anyone who even thinks they might like bluegrass. No prissy singing here: These women both have beautiful, strong, voices. The songs are great, the harmonies are great, the instrumentation is great (first-class accompanists and arrangements).
This isn't a great "women's bluegrass album", it's one of the great bluegrass albums, period.
Pioneering Women of Bluegrass Review.......2007-01-09
This is a great bluegrass recording. It is raw and you can feel the emotion in the singing. I also really enjoyed the banjo playing on a number of the pieces. This recording is worth every penny spent.
Mountain diamonds.......2003-11-13
Of all the treasures I've unearthed in the Indiana State University music library, this is one of the shiniest. It's the kind of disc that makes you crawl down onto the floor, stretch out, and soak up all the pathos and passion of the music. Dickens' and Garrard's voices are just strange and raw enough to make a lasting impression without coming across as either weird or harsh, and the songs themselves are totally out-of-this-world. The melodies and harmonies are intriguing, the instrumental accompaniment is superb, and the lyrics are very fine. Acoustically, it's amazing that a recording done on a simple LP forty years ago could sound this good, because the sound quality is virtually crystal clear. Don't miss this disc.
Excellent bluegrass........2003-10-22
I actually first heard about Hazel Dickens on Worldlink tv. They aired a documentary entitled "You can't tell the singer from the song" about her life and work. The "throatiness" of her voice was strangely enticing. Her voice is piercing and emotional- perfect for bluegrass. Well, I went to a music store and found this disc. I didn't know who Alice Gerard was either, but I am extremely happy to have found this treasure. The two women compliment each other perfectly. Hazel's voice is shrill and passionate, Alice's full of conviction, yet with soothing tones. Some of the highlights of the album are "TB Blues", "Who's that Knocking?", "Gabriel's Call", "Walkin' in my Sleep", "Long Black Veil", "I hear a Sweet Voice Calling", and "I Just got Wise". This album is a revelation. Buy it. I promise you will have no disappointments.
One of the best albums of all time.......2003-10-12
Listening to this album will make anyone a convert to bluegrass. The range of sons is incredible, from rollicking upbeat tunes to mournful dirges. Hazel and Alice's voices blend together magnificently in harmony. This sounds so great that it is unbelievable that it was recorded on a minmal shoestring in the mid 1960s, in bare-bones conditions with borrowed old equipment, because it sounds so perfect.
If I had to recommend just one album to anyone, it would be this one.
Hazel Dickens has the most purely emotional singing voice I've ever heard, even better than Judy Garland or Edith Piaf. Her range can quickly go from utterly raw to softly sweet.
I have specified in my will that a song from this album be played at my memorial service.

"The Definitive Recording".......2004-04-02
Having finally listened to the Original Broadway Cast Recording of this masterpiece, my verdict's in and clear: the London Cast Recording is the definitive version.
The voices of the London Cast are, to a man (and woman) far superior -- this is most obvious when listening to the Quartet who open the show, and act as the chorus. The American artists, while excellent, simply can't compare to the power, range and tone of the Brits.
The arrangements are gorgeous, the choral work astounding, and the version of "The Miller's Son" found here will floor you. Not only the best recording of this particular show, but possibly the best recording of any Sondheim show available on CD -- Sweeney Todd is the only other contender, for my money.
The Orginal Cast Recording is great for a historical value. The British Cast is what you listen to when you want to hear the best show you'll never have the privilege of seeing. It's ruined me. But I'm not complaining.
Sondheim's Greatest.......2003-07-10
I'm of the mind that A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (and SWEENEY TODD) are Sondheim's two greatest works. Why? Because they drip with intelligence and exist entirely within the world of the music. NIGHT MUSIC is propelled by the steady pulse of 3/4, creating the impression that none of the characters would ever come to the realization that they are merely parts being acted and presented on stage--it happens in its own little universe. It's so yummy...
Having said that, I conclude that the perfect cast album could only be completed with the physical presences of Desiree Armfelt and Fredrik Egerman and the rest of the gang. It seems that, when approaching these personalities, actors and actresses treat the music as the music and not as a phase of the dialogue--they don't attack the parts with the brand of boldness and self-importance that each of these characters possesses. The London cast album suffers from such problems. None of the performers have the arrogant voices needed (unfortunately, only a couple have achieved voices somewhat-worthy of the score). Henrik cannot hit the high notes (he goes into falsetto); Charlotte is too shaky to be sufficiently biting; Fredrik seems too feminine; the Count--goofy instead of condescending--seems molded from Sesame Street. The quintet features voices too uneducated and careful. Still, Anne is cutely bubbly (even in voice), Petra is a fine belter, and Hermione Gingold as Mme. Armfelt really makes the listener savor every consonant in her speech. It is an excellent archive of Sondheim's greatest. I would recommend this over the New York cast simply because Jean Simmons creates the closest Desiree I could ever imagine.
Not comparable to the broadway recording.......2002-09-03
The performances are adequate, in some cases skillful, but from the opening note of the show (which the chorus member, in a misguided attempt at humor, aborts in order to insert a racous throat-clearing), this recording lacks the taste and dignity of its Broadway counterpart. I do not recommend this recording.
A wonderful CD release.......2002-02-15
I, ofcourse like so many other reviewers of the same cd, own both the London and original Broadway cast albums, and frankly the London recording does laps around the original. First- I will admit Jean Simmons is not the ideal Desiree, but what she lacks in beauty and glamour makes up for Glyniss Jhon's creaking melodies. There is no song on this recording that is worse then the original, and very few actors ( ofcourse, who could top the original Fredrick, definately including this one). Anne is supurb. Her voice is extremely beautiful, and makes up for the corny fluffieness of the original Anne, and her expression in such songs as " A Weekend In The Country" is simply hillariously funny. This Charlotte is also devistatingly wonderful, with her delicious voice, although you can't realy balance the two Charlottes out (the other from the original), as they play the charector with much difference. This Petra is also stunning, especially in "The Miller's Son," which is recomended in all of these reviews. And what a great operetta Quintet, along with Hermoine gingold's wonderful aged performance. All the male parts are also met to the very top, especially Henrick.
A few of my favorite songs on this album is the wonderfully light and fast paced, elegant little romp of "A Weekend In The Country," and "The Glamorous Life" (which has always been my favorite song from the production, with a much better Fredricka then the origianl).
In conclusion, this recording should certainly be bought by "A Little Night Music" fans, and especially Stephen Sondheim,in the words of another reviewer, who's lyrics are the real star,
a beautiful recording.......2001-12-19
After proving to producers that she could handle performing the role of Desiree on the National Tour, Jean Simmons was asked to come to London to debut with the show at the Adelphi Theatre. Running for a little over 400 performances the show also featured Hermione Gingold reprising her role of Madame Armfeldt.
Ms Simmons is quite affecting as the flighty and insecure Desiree who feels she is ready to pursue romance after years of broken promises and false hopes.
Gingold, now qute comfortable and honed in her role; performs the comical and contemplative "Liasons" wonderfully.
Stephen Sondheim's most complex and multi-faceted score is given a grand treatment here. Almost certainly this is Sondheim's most interesting and most beguiling score which runs the entire gamut of emotions.
A must for all true musical theater fans.

Great album of great songs.......2001-01-07
A great collection of hit songs by some of the 90's best female pop artists. "Foolish Games" by Jewel, and "I love you always" by Donna Lewis are the Radio Edit versions. "Runaway" by The Corrs is the radio mix, and "Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega featuring DNA is the 7" version. Other artists include Jann Arden "Good Mother"...Mila Mason "Dark Horse"...Emmylou Harris "Goodbye"...Indigo Girls "Closer to fine", and Beth Nielsen Chapman "Sand and Water". Recommended.
Women and Songs V1.......2000-06-13
I found the next volume (Women and Songs 2) in this series to be better than this one, but this is still a good choice with a good selection of artists and songs. All in all a great series of CD's.
Women with Voices!.......2000-06-13
I just can't get enough of this cd. It's excellent! I can listen to this cd over and over again (and I have).

You can say one thing about Amy Rigby: Whether cowering in the dreads of despair or rejoicing in newly sprung reverie, she's the same clever, cynical and exceedingly straightforward songwriter we have come to appreciate since her 1996 solo debut, Diary of a Mod Housewife. On record number five, the 40-something New Yorker once again turns life's observations, both humdrum and vital, into tightly wound, three-minute pop diaries. In "Like Rasputin," Rigby staggers to her feet from the evil man just in time to grapple with "The Trouble With Jeanie," her new husband's peach of an ex-wife. As usual, she finds levity in any situation, and this time she fanaticizes about "Dancing With Joey Ramone," calls out the absurdities of "Needy Men" and explains how the woman in "The Year of the Fling" was "running fast from the past (and) hell bent on having a blast." Like any great author, Rigby is content enough in her craft to expose the imperfections as comfortably as the triumphs. And as with any great songwriter, she always manages to pull it off. --Scott Holter
Album Description
Renowned songwriter Amy Rigby's fifth album finds the singer, who began her solo career as the Mod Housewife, bringing it all back home. Hailed for her keen eye and sharp wit in tracing the vagaries and victories of modern romance, her new release finds Rigby promising "I Don't Want To Talk About Love No More." But, of course, she does - getting to the heart of the matter and the punch line in due course.
Customer Reviews:
Appealing to many ages - thoughtful and fun.......2006-02-23
This CD is a thoughtful reflection on the peculiarities of life and love. The lyrics are witty and easy to relate to, and the melodies are fun. Amy Rigby is my nine year old daughter's new favorite performer - Rigby sings about topics at the center of all of our lives.
In a world of increasingly marginal and crappy music..........2005-11-30
...Amy Rigby just keeps getting better. I thought she had really hit one out of the park, topping her usual already high standards, with "Till the Wheels Fall Off", but this one is, amazingly, even better...You'll laugh, you'll cry. Nobody does this kind of tragicomic poignancy better, with the exception of Loudon Wainwright III.
Also, if you get the chance to see her live, don't pass it up. She puts on an incredibly rockin', generous and rambling show...
And, if all the above isn't enough to sell you, remember: the woman danced with Joey Ramone!
The Original Desperate Housewife.......2005-11-15
Her best writ since marriage, despair and growing up made her debut a masterpiece a decade ago, and her coolest vocal as well, diary number 5 tackles ex-husbands, ex-wives of new husbands, needy men, dreams of Joey Ramone, all while feeling an infinity with Rasputin. If only Oprah understood the complexities of real womanhood. A songwriter nonpareil, with only Lucinda as a peer. Sheryl Crow could learn a few [dozen] lessons. Why isn't this woman a star with 8 Grammy's and 10 million in the bank? Oh, yeah...the better for her lovers, like me. My grade: A
she got back up again.......2005-09-08
I didn't think she could top her last album but she did. INCREDIBLE. "Rasputin" is the kind of song Lou Reed should be writing. And it gets better and better from there...one killer track after another. This is her most powerful album yet. Every song is right in your face. It's fun, yet serious. Hooks galore. Great production. Super-tight band. Complete success.
Rolling Stone Magazine Review.......2005-09-01
For nearly a decade, this divorced, middle aged New York mom has been turning out pop-wise confessionals with the consistancy and charm of a Nashville Pro - most notably on her 1996 debut "Dairy Of A Mod Housewife". On her fifth album she makes pretty, witty out of brutal honesty and some apparently deserved bitterness. Wether comparing herself to Rasputin or dreaming of quality time with Joey Ramone, her biting humor and often bouyant melodies ensure that "Little Fugitive" never gets mopey or precious.
Billboard Magazine Review
On the first track of singer/songwriter Amy Rigby's fifth album, the one-time "mod housewife" wittily compares herself to czarist Russia's most infamous and rakish character. Odd entrance? Seemingly so, but the sly humor and infectious melody of "Like Rasputin" demands repeat spins. The rest of the 12-song package is equally rewarding, whether Rigby is questioning why her new husband's ex-wife has become a friend ("The Trouble With Jeanie"), dreaming of punk dancing with Joey Ramone or brilliantly tapping into the psychedelic sonics of "Revolver"-era Beatles ("So You Know Now"). Rigby's raw-rockin' delivery and fed-up-with-cheap-crap themes are most prominent, yet she also plays it jaunty on "Needy Men," Roche-like folky with the harmony-rich "Girls Got It Bad" and nostalgic on "Always With Me." Recorded in two days in New York with guitarist Jon Graboff as co-producer, "Little Fugitive" is one of the best pop/rock albums of the year. -Dan Ouellette
