Customer Reviews:
A TRUE MASTERPIECE..........2006-07-27
... long before Chris became a wedding singer (via "Lady In Red"), he put out this terrific recording where every track's a winner - a big thumbs up to the producer (Robin Geoffrey-Cable or something sounding similarly blue-blooded, if memory serves me correctly), who I can't remember presiding over any other recording after this one.
Two things: 1) where's the beautiful album cover artwork featuring a train in the night; 2) when will a remastered version be available?
My First Album.......2006-01-20
...actually, to clarify the title of this review, it is the first album I ever had bought for me, or to clarify further, the first album I ever asked for.
Let me take you back to 1979..I was turning 13 and had first heard this album at scout camp during the summer. I was blown away by the songs...God and the Devil playing Cards, women who stripped (at 12, going on 13 it was really erotic) songs about WW1 and love and murder and spacemen.
Therefore, for my birthday in the September I asked my parents for 'Spanish Train by Christy Burke!.
Thankfully someone in the record shop knew what they were asking for and they arrived home with the album.
I played the album so much that both my parents ended up knowing all the words of every song (and they still do!).
As most other reviewers have mentioned, Chris is remembered by most people for the Lady In Red, but this is the album that will always define Chris De Burgh for me.
Over the years I have probably started to dislike some of the songs, especially Spaceman (na,na,na,na,na,na chorus kinda grates at this stage), however I still have the original album. I also have it on tape and on CD, which is probably the best way of explainign how good this is.
An incredible work.......2005-11-09
The problem with marketing someone like Chris DeBurgh in America is that he's not a pop singer. He's a poet. (A poet with Celine Dion-like levels of beltishness, but a poet nonetheless.) As a result, he was hideously misrepresented by his one big hit more than arguably any other singer in history, and his career never recovered.
Which is just too damn bad, because his poetry, in full force in Spanish Train And Other Stories, is a work of art. He can be funny (Patricia The Stripper), poignant (This Song For You), Optimisic (I'm Going Home), and even incredibly melodic and breathtakingly original at the same time (A Spaceman Came Travelling, and it's a CRIME that this doesn't get any airtime in the holiday season).
This album definitely isn't for everybody. DeBurgh makes no concessions to mainstream thought or religious squeamishness (yes, the devil cheats God, get over it). And he gets pretty dang loud, too. But if you approach with an open mind...and an appetite for riveting stories...you're going to love this, guaranteed.
DeBugh's at his Best.......2001-12-02
The song writing on this album is amazing ... powerful lyrics make this a classic album. Chris DeBurgh's ability to tell a story in a 3 minute song occurs on several tracks ... "Spanish Train" is a classic, and "Spaceman Came Travelling" is still played at Christmas time on the radio, a different twist about
what happened on that special Christmas eve. My favorite is "Lonely Sky", a sad ballad, but written well. "Old Friend" and
"I'm Going Home" are also beautiful songs about friendship and the important things in life, and everybody knows "Patricia the Stripper", a fun song about a stripper who says "God made her a sinner, just to keep fat men thinner". In all, a classic work that should be in your C.D. collection!
A True Classic.......2001-02-03
Every track on this album has a story and a moral. The lyrics are as brilliant as they are varied and in each the music matches the mood of the story perfectly. Some of his best and most enduring songs had their debut on this album which I have loved on vinyl and CD since the 70's. Buy it...you won't regret it.

It's ok but nothing spectacular .......2007-06-24
I am not familiar with Chantal Kreviazuk's music. I prefer listening to goth and industrial music for most of the time but every now and then I like to listen to singer/songwriters like Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan. I recently came across Chantal Kreviazuk's latest album "Ghost Stories" (she obviously aped that title from British singer/songwriter Amanda Ghost) at my local library. I decided to check out her music. I have to admit that I found her cd to be quite pleasant to listen to. The songs have a good pop hook but I also found her music rather bland and uninspiring to listen to. I wasn't too wild about Chantal's voice either. Her voice got on my nevers quite a bit like on "Blame Yourself" which she sounded awfully whiney. I could hear an obvious Sheryl Crow influence in Chantal's voice and I can't say that is a good thing either. "Ghost Stories" is pleasant to listen to but offers nothing that hasn't been said and done before by other female singer/songwriters.
Chantal - Not at her Best.......2007-05-13
While I agree with the previous reviews on the imported version of Ghost Stories that is featured on Amazon that Chantal has taken a darker approach to this CD than her earlier ones. I had a really hard time appreciating Ghost Stories.
I also have the CD edition with the 2 bonus tracks, which are simply her songs Time and I Do Believe in renditions that pretty much sound exactly like the originals, so don't break your neck trying to get that version instead of the regular Ghost Stories CD.
Typically, Chantal's beautiful and unique voice radiates over an entire CD of her's, however with this one, I wasn't able to get that same effect. The first song led me into the CD with grace, it was beautiful and you begin to see that this CD will be different from the others with the mystical and enchanting, almost haunting music in the first song. The Ghost of You (Track 1) is my favorite of the entire CD. The following songs, for the exception of a select few such as the first track and Waiting for the Sun (Track 9) don't capture Chantal's vocals very well and in the rest she is heard screeching and almost screaming lyrics and notes such as in track 11: Wendy's House, which is incredibly painful to listen to. Her background singers compliment her by doing the same.
This CD was incredibly disappointing. Chantal has so much talent, and this project simply does not do her justice. If any of you are first time Chantal listeners, you have to check out her CD: What If It All Means something, which really captures her vocals, and instrumental talent. There, is the true Chantal. This was an experiment gone wrong for her; hopefully she'll make a nice recover with the next one.
Emotional and Strong.......2006-12-25
Chantal's 4th Studio Album is marvelous, and very much different from her previous 3.
Chantal has taken a cue from Nelly Furtado and has changed her music, to a darker, more lyrical, more angsty and much more soulful level. The lyrics are now very angst-ridden and carries a stronger message to all who listen to it.
All I Can Do is very dark, very meaningful and it makes you yearn for more. However, the rest of the album is not like the first single, ranging from the rousing piano intros of Ghosts of You, the melodious and catchy tune of Wonderful and the shocking lyrics of Asylum.
This album is very varied and it shows that she is no more the girl who mused about Time leaving her behind. She is now the woman who sees the world for what it is.
Chantal is an amzing musician and composers - BUY THIS CD! HER BEST CD EVER!!!!.......2006-10-26
I love Chantal as a musician and composer. I have followed her career since the very beginning. I have seen her 3 times. In fact, I have traveled from Boston MA to Canada just to see her perform.. In November we drove to Toronto to see her (A blizzard was raging in NY). SHE WAS AMAZING.
This is a totally different CD from her. It is my favorite. Beautiful piano, strings, bass and of course Chantal's beautiful voice (She is also breathtakingly physically beautiful too - amazing).
What a wonderful musician she is. The melodies and the arrangements are just superb.
Her husband Raine (of: Our Lady Peace) plays the bass on the CD and he too is wonderful.
You will be mezmerized by this amazingly artistic and wonderful CD.
Don't miss this cd!! I am so happy about this CD. It is trully a work of art.

I also had to write about the poster who bashed this album. I have all of her cd's, and have had the pleasure of seeing her live twice, once with just her and a piano. This cd is different from her last three, but like the last poster said, you don't want the same thing all the time, correct? I'm hopeful she'll come to Seattle to tour, and I will be the first in line!

A very exciting talent...........2004-12-09
I stumbled across this album by accident. I'm very glad I did. There is a wide range of songs, from old standards like "In these shoes" and "Mack the knife" (complete with spine tingling tap dance intro...) through to pop classics like "Lean on me" and "Uptight" (everything is alright). Old standards dominate, and there is plenty of brass to the fore - however the rich voice of this very talented guy is never overwhelmed by this.
"In these shoes" has a very latin feel, very upbeat but sung with a knowing smile, one feels.
I really liked this album: there is something for almost everyone, and I just hope it gets some publicity and some air time, because it deserves to be a smash. I don't normally indulge in writing reviews, but I feel somebody ought to be giving this album a plug (it is that good). Can't wait for the next offering by Chantz, whatever it is.
Abso-blooming-lutely Marvellous!!!.......2004-11-07
WOW - what an amazing, versatile and professional young talent! I was blown away by this fantastic, uplifting CD. You can't fail to be tapping your feet, clicking your fingers, and singing along to the great music and rhythm - and he's only 17!! GO CHANTZ!!!!!
