Enough said..........2007-01-21
I gave (natural) birth while listening to "Freefall". No question, this is the best record I have ever heard, and the best band known to man. Not to mention, Mark Solomon is the coolest (hey, I've got a think for bald men).
Better than 95% of what's currently being played on rock radio.......2006-01-10
Those who are used to the hard-hitting, edgy, raw feel of Stavesacre's earlier albums, Friction and Absolutes are in for a bit of a surprise when they pop this one in the player. With Speakeasy, Stavesacre tones down much of their prior edginess in favor of a more radio-friendly feel. There are still some aggressive tracks on the album, including, "You Know How It Is" and "Disquiet," which will definitely appeal to those familiar with the older material. Similarly, Stavesacre's first album, Friction, had its share of ballads in "At the Moment," "Burning Clean," and "Stars and Clouds" so it's not like they've never played more subdued material before. Still, those who are familiar with the first two albums will definitely notice a new feel with Speakeasy.
As with Stavesacre's prior offerings, there isn't a bad song on the album, and many or most of these tracks fall into the "epic" category in my book. The production quality is excellent, and the songs really work well together, which is important in an album. So, while those expecting "Absolutes, Part II" will have some getting used to, both new and die-hard Stavesacre fans will have much to enjoy with Speakeasy.
A Creative Milestone for Mark Salomon and Company..........2005-11-03
If you've heard Stavesacre's previous material, you can see the progression and artistic vision that brought them to this record. This is where it all began to take shape. Friction and Absolutes are great collections of songs, but in the end that's all they are. Speakeasy finds the band in full stride, having learned from past inadequacies, and ready to put out the album of their career. I can best describe the music as atmospheric post-hardcore rock, and musically they do a stellar job. However, the thing that strikes me most about this record is the atmosphere or mood that permeates these songs. From the beginning right down to the simply stunning cover of The Cure's "Fascination Street" and beyond, there is some kind of eerie, autumnal shadow lurking behind every riff and lyric that simultaneously makes you shudder and tingle. Not to make the comparison too easy, but the progression of songs on this record are not unlike The Cure's Disintegration, each song sending you deeper into a corner of yourself that you'd rather not have to face. And that's where this album succeeds. It is journey through the questions that seem to have no answers ("Gold and Silver," "Sundown Motel,") to a place of total despair ("Fascination Street,"Rivers Underneath") and ultimately a place of understanding and redemption ("This Love"). The journey will be well worth your time.
Speakeasy presents change to Stavesacre fans.......2005-08-12
Speakeasy represented a turn in Stavesacre's direction with the departure of Jeff Bellew on guitar and the introduction of Ryan Dennee. It is considered by the band members to be one of their best albums; an opinion shared by many Stavesacre fans.
While not specifically a "Christian" album, it has many Biblical elements veiled within their songs including quotes from the Psalms--Freefall (From Hand to Hand) and Gold and Silver.
This cohesive group consisting of Mark Salomon on lead vocals, Ryan Dennee on guitar, Dirk Lemmenes on bass and Sam West on drums create a great sound including elements of rock and softer ballads and once again prove their as yet unknown superiority in the music industry.
Excellent in all categories.......2005-05-21
Speakeasy is one of my all-time favorite albums of any genre. From a lyrical standpoint, the songs are at once poignant and beautiful. Words sung with passion. "Keep Waiting," "Rivers Underneath," and "Gold and Silver" are particularly good. I still get chills. In terms of production, the tracks sound amazing. I particularly like the sound of the bass and drums (I'm a musician...this stuff is important to me.) Lots of deep lows, good balance of mids and highs. Production goes well with the dark, brooding, but positive lyrical content. Plus, who could deny Mark's voice? Its strange and a wonderful contrast to the other instruments. Run, don't walk, to your local music store and buy this album.

Product Description
Shelter is a departure from the solo-acoustic sound that had characterized Kristin's previous efforts. The record features Stephen Chopek (John Mayer, Norah Jones) and Tracy Civello (ex. Civello, Sony) as well as fellow Baton Rouge ex patriots Poor Harvey. The result is a punchier sound that's closer to rock and blues than folk ballads. `LISTPRICE: 12.99

Album Description
The New Speak Easy, a saxophone and piano duo, celebrates New World Classics; the music that echoed through sumptuous hotel bars and lobbies of New York, Paris, Buenos Aires, and Rio throughout the Jazz-Age. THINK GLAMOUR! CD cover drawing by Freddy Wittop from the Paris Music Hall Collection; used with permission from the Hargrett Rare Books and Manuscript Library/University of Georgia Libraries.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful sax.......2000-02-22
I first heard "The New Speakeasy" tonight when the charming, two-women duo was featured on WNYC-FM here in New York and was immediately taken with their brilliant arrangements of 1920s American and Brazilian music. The music is romantic, and great to listen to if you are a classical OR jazz fan. I'm recommending this CD (and hope there are more to follow!) to all of my friends, and hope you'll give it a listen.
The New Speak Easy - What a Great NEW discovery.......2000-02-09
Had Cary Grant and Fred Astaire been musicians, this is what they would have sounded like. If you have never "listened to style", do yourself a favor and pick up this CD - A must for the discriminating audiophile who appreciates talent coupled with elegance.

5 stars for 2 starlets.......2000-01-29
I stumbled across this cd while looking for a soundtrack for a tape for Kurt Weill's upcoming birthday. I was looking for vocals but in this two instrument cd I found much more: precision, fluidity, surprise in both the sax and piano. And surprise in repetoire: Weill, Buarque, Dorsey and....Bond, James Bond? Toddlin' Sax takes my breath away...it's not just the great sax playing, but also the twitterpation between the sax and piano. Ialso love that this was done by two women (I am a woman who grew up with the notion that sax could only be mastered by a guy)...I don't know if you'd know it was two women unless you were told, tho you might guess, in the way that left-handed people (I am one) can suss out when someone else is left-handed: something special, a unique slant, the breathless filament between a thousand rain drops, between a rock and hope. Solid playing carving a path for dreams and romance. Am I gushing too much? It's gorgeous music, it's a frigid Friday night in New York; but still, listening to this, I want to sweep out onto the street in a long swirly dress and pirouette into a backbend into the arms of...not just any guy, but that one who can hear the music my body's swaying to, my hair is waving to, my soul is flying with. Wait. I'm a New Yorker. I never think corny thoughts like this, I'm much to old for soppy romance. But these songs keep drawing me in...was there really a time where musical thoughts were so pure and so elegantly, earthily and spiritually sexual? Sweet bliss. No dirt need apply. Sigh me a river.
Great New Discovery.......2000-01-28
The New Speak Easy is my best new discovery. I heard them featured on WNYC two evenings ago and have been listening to their CD ever since. If you love beautiful saxophone sounds, then the tone of their "Harlem Nocturne" is both different and exciting--there's a musical twist here you won't want to miss. And "Le Grand Tango" is just that--if tango is a choreographed bullfight, then this is a situation when nobody leaves the bullring alive!
