Customer Reviews:
Sousa By the Royal Marines.......2007-03-31
This is a great CD re-issue of the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music under Graham Hoskins. This band did a three LP series on Sousa marches some years ago that was better than most on this very well covered topic. Sousa march recordings will always come and go, but some like this stand out more than others. For one, there is nothing like the panache of a Royal Marines band. Their sound is a time honored development that gets passed from one generation to the next. Even as the number of RM bands continues to change and downsize, there are now about four bands left in the service, their sound quality continues to be superb.
When these recordings were made RM bands were still at their height in the British service and their quality was amazing. Most bands numbered over 60 in this period, and that is why many Americans may be surprsed at the volume of music produced here. This is not one of your small, though excellent regimental bands! Americans tend to think that British military band instrumentation is on the thin side. Not so here! Of course Sousa always sounds best with either the Allentown band or the US Marine band.
This CD is evidence of how popular Sousa has always been in the UK, and with RM bands in particular. The selection here on two CDs covers most of the standard Sousa fair, with a few different selections here and there. Unfortunatley there are none of Sousa's fine transcriptions for classical music, or selections from his operettas. This music is always wonderful to have in combination with the marches as it shows how much variety he was capable of in his compositions. For that kind of concert the reader is referred to the very fine collection of Sousa music being done under the Naxos label by the Band of the Royal Artillery.
Here you will find a solid collection of Sousa's great marches. Roughly a third of those 136 compositions are contained here. The Royal Marines give a sharpe and clear sound to these works which should certainly inspire. You will also get a very nice idea how RM bands sounded back in the 1980s. Graham Hoskins was a fine director of music, typical of the inhouse genius of the Royal Marines Band Service at that time. He took this band on a USA tour in 1985 with the Arygll & Sutherland Highlanders. Devotees of Sousa should enjoy these spirited versions of the march king's music as performed across the pond.
Still Among the Best.......2006-06-01
I bought two audio casettes with these marches back in the 1980's and wore them out. These performances are hard to beat for virtuosity, enthusiasm, and sparkle. The sound quality is outstanding. And there are some marches that are rarely, if at all, available.
How Sousa Should Sound.......2006-03-07
Great value 2 cd disc set cut in the early 1980's & remastered the sound of the Royal Marines Band is nothing short of terrific. Judging by the sound would not be surprised for this to be a combined double RM band. These 1st chair players give Sousa's great marches that extra kick that takes the "March Kings" music to that higher level. By the center quick march!!!!

As the ebullient ringleader of this all-star Lone Star quartet, Doug Sahm tells this 1990 Austin City Limits crowd that "it's rock and roll conjunto time!" Such a description barely hints at the raucous vitality of the band's bilingual, Tex-Mex border music. The set (also available on DVD) finds Freddy Fender resurrecting his country smashes "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" and "Before the Next Teardrop Falls," while the tremulous vocals of some of his earlier, regional hits suggest that he is to Tejano music what Aaron Neville is to New Orleans soul. Conjunto accordion kingpin Flaco Jimenez provides rollicking instrumental accents throughout, while singing with Fender on some of the Spanish-language material. From the rock and roll side, Sahm and keyboardist Augie Meyers reprise their hits from the Sir Douglas Quintet's 1960s heyday, with "She's About a Mover" and "Mendocino" steeped in the same musical roots they share with Fender and Jimenez. Such raucous, festive interplay plainly enjoys a home-field advantage in Austin, where the performance finds the foursome hailed as conquering heroes. (The release serves as a memorial to Sahm, who died in 1999 and to whom the album is dedicated.) --Don McLeese

Great Gig.......2007-04-04
The Commander and his Airmen were my favourite rockin' country band of the 70's and this album shows them at their very best. Since there is no definitive Commander "Best Of" album out there, (the "Too Much Fun" album is probably the best but still less than satisfactory), Cody fans should just go out and get all their early albums (i.e. those albums released prior to 1976). Start with "Lost in the Ozone", "Hot Licks, Cold Steel and Trucker's Favourites", this Armadillo live album (and its companion piece "Sleazy Roadhouse Stories" - the rest of the Armadillo concert) and then go from there. The Airmen were not just a bunch of stoned, drunk musos but instrumentalists (and songwriters) of the highest quality. Many are still making a living from music over 30 years later. They may seem rough and ready on the albums but that was the effect they sought. Listen closely and you will hear superb musicianship, arranging, singing and songwriting (including inspired selection of covers).
CCAHLPA burned hot and bright for a short time and this live album is the pinnacle of their recorded work.
Commander Cody at His Best.......2006-06-25
These are all of the Commader Cody songs that have made him a legend. Highly recomended for any one into Rock-a-billy or Texas Rock.
Should have been a double live..........2005-12-08
...And it almost was a double live...the commander wanted it that way, record company said no...what do record companies know? Not much, sadly, becuase there WAS a WHOLE LOT more music from this concert at the world-famous Armadillo World Headquarters...the rest of this concert can be found on one of three albums...Sleazy Roadside Stories, Bar Room Classics, or Texas Roadhouse Favorites...the third mentioned is hard to find, apperantly a UK only release. Sleazy Roadside Stories has two tracks missing from the other two, but any of those are good if you want the rest of the concert. This is a great album, it has, arguably, the BEST version of "Riot In Cell Block #9" ever recorded...was that July 27 1973 or 1963? Hmmmm Anyway, crank this one up, crack open a lone star, and drift away to 525 and 1/2 Barton Springs Road in Austin, TX...in 1973, was there a better place to see the greatest progressive country band in history?
Good Rockin Tonight.......2005-08-19
There were a lot of groups that I enjoyed in my wilder 20's and 30's. Asleep at the Wheel was my favorite until I discovered Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. These guys could really rock and roll. Their early albums showed them finding their style and they kept getting better. Unfortunately, when they had really hit their stride, the real talent of the group went elsewhere and we were left with the Commander and a new group. He may have put the group together and his name at the front but Commander Cody was not the heart and soul of this group.
"Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas" is one of those great later albums when the group had found their sound and wasn't afraid to show it. My favorite cuts are "Sunset on the Sage", "Git It", "Diggy Liggy Lo", "Mean Woman Blues", and "Too Much Fun". They show that they can do ballads, rock and roll, and out of control rockabilly. I thing what gives them their special sound is the liberal use of the pedal steel guitar and the fiddle. It gives their sound a sort of "take off" to a higher level.
I saw Asleep at the Wheel live on several occassions (including the original cast) but I never had an opportunity to see Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. There's nothing I can do to fill the void except continue to listen to their live albums. If you can't get excited about this album, you're on too much medication.
Superb live album of hippie-country-rock-swing.......2003-08-06
Following a third album that didn't shine as inventively as their first two, the Airmen returned with an absolutely brilliant document of all that their music meant. Recorded live at Austin, Texas' "World Armadillo Headquarters," the Airmen sound like the Buckaroos in their prime: relaxed, confident, and deadly across a wide variety of inter-related musical genres. They even cover Owens' "Crying Time," much to the crowd's delight.
The band swings effortlessly from the opening fiddle-driven instrumental into a rousing take of Elvis' "Good Rockin' Tonight." They cruise along with Johnny Horton's trucker themed "I'm Coming Home" only to plow headlong into the misery of the band's signature "Seeds and Stems (Again)." They harmonize with equal beauty for the cowboy tune, "Sunset on the Sage," and the doo-wop "Git It."
The Commander gets his boogie-woogie slot on the band-penned "Oh Momma," and his spoken-vocal leads a guitar-and-sax heavy take of Leiber & Stoller's "Riot in Cell Block #9. The Cajun-influenced "Diggy Liggy Lo" bursts with incredible, manic energy, and the band's "Too Much Fun" shows what a fine dance-combo they were, as does the rousing closer, "Mean Woman Blues."
This would be the last record the band would make before jumping to Warner Brothers, and it's a pitch-perfect document of all they created in their time at Paramount. All that's missing from this album is the dancer's sweat and a cold Shiner Bock -- the good times are preserved here for all to hear.

not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Bobby Bland could both comfort and chill, sometimes in the same song. He does so on this undeniably classic album's "Lead Me On," which begins with the line "You know how it feels, you understand / What it is to be a stranger in this unfriendly land" and ends softly two minutes later with the promise "I'll follow you." Such drama, coupled with a mellow soulfulness, is the norm on Two Steps. Bland has been called "the Sinatra of the blues" more than once, and this album is the best explanation ever for that appellation. --Rickey Wright

Two Steps from the Blues.......2007-04-04
Hearing Bobby Bland sing these real blues numbers was like a trip back into the past when Blues lyrics were pure and sung totally from the heart. I will treasure this CD and encourage my kids and grandkids to listen and learn what real blues was all about. I was pleased to learn that these selections were the original recordings as I remembered them from back in the fifties and sixties. Bland's rendition of "St. James Infirmary" is the best in my opinion. If anyone wants to experience the authentic Bobby "Blue" Bland, then this is the CD to purchase.
bobby bland's best........2007-03-17
in music, albums generally regarded as classics are pretty darn dependable. they are almost always outstanding. i wish that was the case with books (where classics are far from dependable). this album by bobby bland is regarded as a classic in the world of rhythm and blues, and once again those music folks have gotten it right. this is a great recording. from beginning to end the material is top notch, and mr bland's sonorous vocals are exceptional and elegant throughout. the horn section is terrific, too; with plenty of powerful saxophone to top things off. and nobody in blues handles a ballad any better than bobby bland. the top track here might very well be the old new orleans dirge "st james infirmary," which is chilling. this album came out in 1961 and the proximity to the 50's shows in a few spots, as there are occasional hints of doo-wop influence, without the doo-wop backup singers. this cd is a must for any collection of blues/soul music. rock and roll fans should pick it up as well. great stuff.
Two Steps From the Blues - Bobby "Blue" Bland.......2007-01-03
Excellent Christmas Gift for a friend. Really enjoyed the CD.

A Terrific Singer.......2006-02-10
Because I think of Bobby Bland as a Blues artist, I was a bit jarred when I heard this the first time. When I think of Blues from this period, I think of people like Buddy Guy, Magic Sam, Little Walter, Muddy Waters. For the most part, the style here is one I recognize more as R&B and sometimes Soul. But after a few listens, that initial surprise didn't matter any more.
This is an outstanding collection of songs, mostly written by Deadric Malone, along with several other standards. More importantly, Bobby Bland puts his all into every one of these songs, delivering definitive versions. His emotional range is almost unbelievable. You can pinpoint the emotion being delivered without even listening to the words, he's that good. I've heard Bland called "the Sinatra of R&B" and, although that sounds a bit patronizing, it fairly captures this singer's ability.
The opener "Two Steps From The Blues" immediately shows off Bland's vocal prowess in a very delicate song. "Cry Cry Cry" is a more traditional Blues with Bland wringing evry bit of emotion out of the song without any trace of being overwrought. "Lead Me On" sound so much like a Sam Cooke song that I had to check the songwriting credit (it's Malone). And so the album goes, it's uniformally excellent all the way through.
The one downside is the fidelity. Although the remastered sound is good - all of the instruments can be distinctly heard - the bass is often too far back in the mix. Too bad, because the bass playing is great. On some songs, notably "I'm Not Ashamed", there's audible distortion on the vocal track. So, although this is an outstanding album, if you're not accustomed to listening to recordings made without the benefit of modern studio technology, the sound might put you off. But, for some of the greatest male R&B singing you're ever likely to hear, this is highly recommended.
There's NOTHING bland about Mr Bland.......2005-09-15
And this is not just the finest recording of either the blues or soul genere but of ANY genre.
There's not a dull track and Mr Bland who classes Perry Como and Tony Bennet as his influnce is outstanding throughout. He's not known as the Sinatra of the blues for nothing.
This was ahead of Stax by a couple of years and was laid down in Houston, Texas. Deardic Malone is the posedeom for Don Robey, the same way that Joe Josea and Jules Taub was for the Bahari Brothers at Modern Records.
This easliy ranks among the great 60's recordings of Otis Redding , James Carr and Howard Tate. It has carisma and charm that's lacking in todays music in a big way.
To echo the two others reviewers, THEY SADLY DON'T MAKE RECORDINGS LIKE THIS ANYMORE. BEYOND ESSENTAIL.

With the aging of Kris Kristofferson into a venerable icon, it's been easier to appreciate his voice as weathered, whereas the younger troubadour more often heard his vocal style dismissed as wooden. No matter--as confirmed by this 1981 taping for Austin City Limits, Kristofferson's artistry has long owed more to the emotional range, depth, and conviction of his material than to his vocal range. And whatever he lacks in the latter is offset by the harmonies and instrumental support from a crack band including Stephen Bruton on guitar and mandolin, "Funky" Donnie Fritts on keyboards, and the great Billy Swan as utility man. Among the revelations are a surprisingly hard-rocking "Me and Bobby McGee," a rollicking arrangement of "The Pilgrim," and a tender "For the Good Times." Of the later and lesser-known fare, both "Darby's Castle" and "Casey's Last Ride" show Kristofferson shifting from confessional intimacy into more of a narrative mode reminiscent of John Prine, while "Magdalene" and the hymn-like closer, "Why Me," extend his thematic artistry into spiritual inquiry. As is typical with the Austin series, a responsive audience coaxes a particularly spirited performance, with the artist gushing more than once that there's no place he'd rather be. --Don McLeese

Kristofferson live and at his singin/songwritin' best!.......2006-05-31
Performed in '81, this concert takes us back to the days when Kristofferson was still a "contemporary" songwriter...i.e., he was still having chart success as a writer. He has since become a legend (hell, he was a legend somewhere around the time his first song got recorded), and is an influence to songwriters of every genre, from country to rock, from folk to R&B. Ironically enough, all of those genres find their way onto this stellar live CD.
It's the concert that almost never was...the night of the scheduled show, a rat chewed through some wires, sending the studio into a blackout. Kristofferson returned the next night invigorated (and armed with a new rat joke) and ready to play the whole night through. These sixteen songs are among his best...from the opening rocker "Star Crossed" to the closing gospel ballad "Why Me." Upbeat, rockin' versions of "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Loving Her Was Easier" parallel the Waylon Jennings covers, yet sound as if they were written to be rocked out. Kristofferson gets controversial on "Magdalene" and sentimental on "For the Good Times" and reflective on "The Pilgrim" and stoned on "Sunday Morning Coming Down." The over-all effect of LIVE FROM AUSTIN TX is this: Kris Kristofferson at his performance peak. He's still the best dang singer/songwriter out there, and if you have any doubts in your head about that, just pick up a copy of this album and LISTEN. Listen with your heart and soul, because that's where this music is going to hit you hardest.
