Album Description
The world's number one chart researcher, Joel Whitburn, selected the recordings for this collection. Joel is the author of the Record Research books which chronicle the artists and the records that hit Billboard's music charts. He hand picked each of the songs in this series according to chart performance and licensing availability. Sounding exactly as they did when first released, these classic recordings have been digitally remastered from original tape sources.
Customer Reviews:
Great selection for representing '81!.......2004-01-07
I bought this album for "Bette Davis Eyes" and didn't really pay attention to what else was on it when I purchased it. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the whole collection is great! I was not around in '81 but with music like this I wish I was. Anyone else 21 or younger ought to check out this CD for a great introduction to 80s variety! My favorites are "The One That You Love", "The Tide is High" and "9 to 5".
I will never forget my big tough brother-in-law belting every word to "9 to 5" as my sister and I watched in laughter. Buy this CD if not to get a great introduction to '81, then to laugh at the ones who know all the words! It's worth it either way!
1981: The crossroads of pop........2002-08-09
NOTES: Rhino's Billboard Top Hits series features ten popular songs from a given year. They may not be the exact biggest hits of the year (due to licensing restrictions from some major artists, etc.) but, more or less, provide an accurate snapshot of the year in pop music.
THIS REVIEW IS FOR 1981:
This was the year MTV was officialy launched. Despite it not getting big for a couple more years, this is where the 80's started to gain their own sound, though it still retained quite a few traces of 70's pop. Singer-songwriters, pop ballads, country crossovers, and (so-called) corporate rock, as well as the emerging new wave were the most popular styles of the day.
1. "Bette Davis Eyes" Kim Carnes -- The series gets going with one of the signature songs of the decade; combining a steady, mid tempo synth line over what sounds like a slowed-down pop/disco beat.
2. "Jessie's Girl" Rick Springfield -- The then co-star of General Hospital launched his music career with this power pop/rocker. Despite all the bashing he might get for his teen idol status, the song rocks, similar to what The Romantics or Loverboy might do.
3. "The One You Love" Air Supply -- This is one of the few clunkers here. Not that it's not a very heartfelt pop ballad, but it feels too dramatcially sad and not musical or melodic enough to be interesting.
4. "Tide is High" Blondie -- This mid tempo, slight new wavish ballad slightly recalls the girl group sound of the 60's is one of the strongest (and last) hits of her career.
5. "Physical" Olivia Newton-John -- One of the sillier tunes on here. This dancable, synth pop number is just about as far as you could get from the sound of her early soft country ballads, and was (appropriately enough) used as an aerobics anthem at the time.
6. "9 to 5" Dolly Parton -- Upbeat pop and another more novelty-type song from the usual country singer, and also the hit to the funny office worker's comedy of the same name (which Parton herself starred in).
7. "Queen of Hearts" Juice Newton -- The third song in a row that either is from a country singer or has some roots in that sound. Although it may seem like a little too much at once, this is far superior and manages to combine a (then) current country sound with fun pop/rock.
8. "Kiss on My List" Hall & Oates -- The hitmaking duo of the 80's gives us one of their strongest songs with this extremely catchy pop/rocker that commonly gets mistaken for an uptempo love song (even if it does somewhat sound like one).
9. "Being With You" Smokey Robinson -- The soul master gives us a more old-time, slightly uptempo pop/soul ballad with a relaxing background sax.
10. "Celebration" Kool & the Gang -- The second incarnation of the band has them moving far from their funk. R & B roots for their first in a string of 80's hits - with this happy pop tune that gets played at just about every party or wedding to this day.
Although this collection still isn't perfect (no year of the 80's can possibly be summed up with just ten songs), but it's a definite improvement over the 1980 series, accurately presenting the exciting changing trends in music at the time. "The One You Love" and "9 to 5" are the only two I could've done without.
As for missing songs: Foreigner was big that year, so I would've picked either "Waiting For a Girl Like You" or "Urgent." Pop ballads, like "Arthur's Theme" and "Endless Love" as well as funk/pop, such as "Super Freak" would've all been welcome over the two mentioned above.
Great tunes! Great sound!.......2001-07-08
Rhino has remastered 10 classic pop singles from one of pop radio's last great years. Before radio splintered into half a dozen different (but very strict) formats, the top 40 stations of the time played whatever their listeners wanted to hear, be it pop, rock, R&B or country. This disc is a great cross section of the glory that was Top 40 radio during Reagan's first term of office. Kim Carnes had the record of the year and it still sounds great today. Rick Springfield started his comeback and Air Supply had yet to grow stale. Smokey had possibly his all time greatest solo hit this year. Dolly Parton sang a great song that topped both country and pop lists. Blondie continued to show their diversity. Hall and Oates were at the top of their game. Olivia Newton-John plateaued in popularity. Juice Newton came roaring back with a string of hits. Kool & The Gang released the party anthem of the century. Not bad for a year that is generally regarded as "bland" for being post-punk and pre-new wave.
Great CD!!!!!.......1999-05-07
If you like 80's music and want to really move to these songs buy this one its great!
THIS IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF 80's MUSIC.......1999-04-27
I think that if you like the 80's kind of music you'll love this c

More Filler than Hits.......1998-06-29
As with the first three volumes, too many unfamiliar songs clutter the collection, and too much AC without any variation into other early 80s genres is simply too much after the fourth CD. All original versions.

Buy it for "Pilot of the Airwaves".......2002-11-26
As what the title states, the CD worths itself for the song "Pilot of the Airwaves". Others are also good songs but you probably find them in many other albums. Ends.

Customer Reviews:
Thank you Nipper for helping make my life complete.......2004-10-21
I already had most of these songs on each artist's respective Greatest Hits packages. I relgiously listend to American Top 40 from 1979 until 1991 when Casey Kasem left the show over a contract dispute and started his own countdown based on charts other than Billboard Magazine. I have recently been trying to get all of the Top 40 songs from that period on CD. This CD provided 3 missing pieces to my collection: "Hooked on Classics", "Puttin' on the Ritz", and "Funkytown". These gems from the 80's are great to hear again after many years. My only reason not for giving it 5 stars is that I wish it had included more rare to CD hits from RCA such as Larry Elgart's "Hooked on Swing" or a true rarity such as the late Rodney Dangerfields "Rappin' Rodney" which peaked out at #83 in early 1984. In any case, the CD is great and highly recommended.
It's Got Those One-Hit Wonders.......2004-02-17
This CD has a few great hits on it. I bought it because of Taco's version of "Puttin' on the Ritz" and "Waiting for a Star to Fall," which at the time I could not find on any other compilation.
As the other reviewers have said, the country songs were disappointing to me. I would have rather had more pop songs. When I want country music, I'd like a whole CD of that. Nonetheless, this is a welcome addition to my collection for the sole purpose of making mix CDs for those long car rides. It's better than buying an entire CD of Boy Meets Girl or Taco for those two individual songs. I also thought the "Hooked on Classics I and II" was a strange thing to put beween those two country songs. I think that should have been at the end. My two cents.
Get it because it's cheap.......2001-01-25
This CD is a good cheap collection of 80s songs. The unifying theme is that they were all released under the RCA label ("Nipper" refers to the dog in the RCA logo), and they all made it into one chart or another. It's certainly not easy to listen to straight through. Songs were taken from country and pop charts, and the arrangement of songs seems to be specifically designed to alternate selections from the two disparate charts. Where else can you hear "Funkytown" lead into a tears-in-my-beer country lament?
Let's face it. You probably would only want it because it has one or two songs you like and you can't find them anywhere else. So your main concerns are whether the sound quality is good and whether the songs appear in their entirety. On that basis, this disc is good. If you're making your own 80s collection for the car, this disc is a good source to record from. Its worth beyond that is debatable.
GREAT 80'S POP WITH SOME NOT NEEDED COUNTRY THROWN IN!.......1999-09-20
This is a very good cd. It features some of my all time favorite hits of the 1980's such as Hooked On Classics and Puttin On The Ritz and such pop classics as 9 To 5, Jessie's Girl and Maneater. all on one neat CD. It even features Elvis Presley's last hit to make the top 40 portion of The Bilboard Hot 100 Gutar Man. The Ronnie Milsap song should have been There's No Getting Over You not the one that is on this Cd! The Alabama song should have the Studio (hit) version! Waylon should have sang without Willie on Theme from Dukes Of Hazzard! and KT Osland Should have not even appeared on this cd. in summing up this cd the pop songs are some of the best of the 80's but the Country songs (the ones that didn't hit the pop charts) we could have done without!

Customer Reviews:
MCA country classics from the seventies and early eighties.......2005-08-30
One of a four-volume series released in the days when CD's were a recent invention, this provides an interesting selection of country classics with a few songs that are now largely forgotten. While this is limited to recordings made for MCA and old labels that became part of MCA, it is nevertheless a very strong selection containing both a mix of traditional country and pop-country tracks.
Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn each appear twice, once together as a duet and once and once each separately. The Oak Ridge Boys also put in two appearances as they provide vocal support to Brenda Lee on Broken trust.
Terri Gibbs (Somebody's knocking) and John Conlee (Rose colored glasses) sing their best songs while Lee Greenwood sings IOU, which is perhaps his best love song. I've seen plenty of compilations titled country classics that don't justify the title, but every track here really is a country classic, just as the title claim. If you can find this album at a reasonable price, you will surely enjoy this collection.
