A single-disc Hot Tuna compilation is a tough proposition. England's Edsel Records tried it in 1994 with "Trimmed and Burning," a 16-track cross-section of every H.T. album except the first. "Trimmed" and the newer "Truckin'" both contain "Killing Time In The Crystal City," one of Jorma's finest acoustic blues compositions...quite possibly THE finest...of his entire career. It was inexplicably trimmed from the CD release of Hot Tuna's final "first-phase" album, the live "Double Dose," so that the album would fit on a single disc. You have to shake your head in wonder at how a decision like that could have been reached. "Crystal City" is also absent from the two-disc "Best of Hot Tuna" CD. The reality is that if you slammed the three compilations I've mentioned together and added a few bonus tracks, you'd have one mighty box set. That didn't happen, so let's return our focus to "Keep On Truckin'." You get two tracks each from "Hot Tuna," "First Pull Up," "America's Choice" and "Double Dose," three from "Burgers," and one each from the remaining three original albums. Offering Yellow Fever's "Sunrise Dance With The Devil" instead of "Bar Room Crystal Ball" (which appears on "Trimmed" and the double "Best Of") is questionable. "Crystal Ball" marked the apex of "Electric Hot Tuna"...it was loud, yet elegant and melodic with trademark Jorma lyrics about friends who want to help him but "they ain't got time to see which way I've fallen." "Hesitation Blues" and "Death Don't Have No Mercy," from the first album, are as essential as essential gets. I see "Keep On Truckin'" as a way to whet the appetite of novice Hot Tuna fans and a means of filling in the blanks (with "Crystal City") for the true believers.

4 out of 5 stars Truckin' through the Seventies.......2006-06-21

Jefferson Airplane leadguitarist Kaukonen was one of the best, most distinctive of the post-Beatles guitar players. Whether finger picking acoustically or cutting through the band's increasingly dense textures with razor-toned electric licks, his singular sound defined the Airplane as surely as the loose three-part harmonies of Marty Balin, Paul Kantner and Grace Slick. His take on the traditional "Good Shepherd" on the Volunteers LP gave a clue of his arranging abilities and where his heart lay.

Kaukonen had spent his high school years in Washington, DC, where he and his best friend, Jack Casady, would haunt local blues, folk and jazz clubs. Jorma ended up in Frisco as a charter member of the Airplane and, when the band fired its original bassist, he sent for his old pal to come west.

Though the J&J twosome found immense success with this most adventurous of rock bands, they never lost their love for the rootsy music they had discovered together as teenagers. As Jefferson Airplane took off for higher heights, they began working occasionally on the side as a duo playing the acoustic blues of The Rev. Gary Davis, Jelly Roll Morton and Robert Johnson.

Their first album, recorded live at a club in Berkeley, California, came out in the spring of 1970. That first release was a stripped down affair, spotlighting Kaukonen's virtuosic acoustic finger picking and Casady's inventive contrapuntal electric bass playing. As the Airplane disbanded, Hot Tuna became more than an extracurricular hobby, expanding into a full-bore rock band with a following of its own.

The newly compiled Keep on Truckin' covers the history of Hot Tuna's various incarnations in the `70s. From ample samplings of the band's original acoustic orientation through its evolution to blistering blues rock, this collection resurrects one of the great offshoots of the classic rock era, a band that may never have been able to escape the shadow of its principals' past, but one unquestionably deserving a re-evaluation. --Jim Newsom

Product Description

As Motown groups such as The Temptations and The Supremes moved into the Seventies, their lineups proved to be fluid, and members left to establish solo careers. Three years after David Ruffin was gone from the Temptations lineup, co-lead singer Eddie Kendricks followed him into a solo career. His departure was certainly less acrimonious than Ruffins had been, as evidenced by the fact that all the Tempts gave warm testimonials on the sleeve of All By Myself, his solo debut. Keep On Truckin: The Motown Solo Collection, Vol. 1 collects four of Kendricks early albums All By Myself, People... Hold On, Eddie Kendricks, and For You produced by Frank Wilson. All of them feature both Eddies classic high tenor and his natural voice in beautifully sympathetic settings. Its part of a plan to see all of Kendricks catalogue reissued; these albums were digitally remastered in 2005 from the original master tapes to bring out every last measure of soul goodness. Incredibly, only People... Hold On was ever issued on CD a disc that has long been out of print. This set contains not only Kendricks pop- and R&B chart-topping Keep On Truckin, but also his No.1 R&B smash Shoeshine Boy and the influential dance cuts Date With The Rain and Girl You Need A Change Of Mind. Other treats hidden in the middle grooves of these records are some unexpected surprises, such as covers of Breads classic If, and Jim Croces Time In A Bottle. Less unusual, perhaps, but beautifully rendered, is his cover of Chuck Jacksons Any Day Now. Like his former Tempts partner David Ruffin, Kendricks exited the scene far too early, dying of cancer in October 1992 at the age of 52. Fortunately, he left behind a rich legacy of recordings. As liner note writer Brian Chin observes, In these four albums, a great artist, surrounded by other great artists, is called again to greatness, and responds like a champion.

5 out of 5 stars R.I.P. Eddie...Thanks for the great memories!!.......2006-08-29

Now whoever said that Eddie was all ballads and no funk surely hasn't heard this wonderful set of 4 of his albums: ALL BY MYSELF, PEOPLE...HOLD ON, EDDIE KENDRICKS, and FOR YOU. It brings a tear to my eye just to relive the wonderful moments I remember as a child in the 70s when my mum used to play these in the house almost on a constant basis!

ALL BY MYSELF, released in April 1971 (#6 R&B, #80 Pop) was Eddie's first solo album after leaving the Temptations. LET'S GO BACK TO DAY ONE is a funky opening with Eddie's vocal multi-layered ala Marvin Gaye! THIS USED TO BE THE HOME OF JOHNNIE MAE was the B-side of IT'S SO HARD FOR ME TO SAY GOODBYE (#37 R&B, #88 Pop) and I DID IT ALL FOR YOU, a popular Quiet Storm tune, was the B-side to CAN I (#37 R&B, #101 Pop), another popular Quiet Storm staple also performed by Brenda Holloway and most recently covered by Phil Perry. SOMETHING'S BURNING starts off slow and ends with a funky ending and the Jimmy Webb composition, DIDN'T WE close this set! What's wonderful is that the Temptations' notes to Eddie originally printed on the back of the album are reprinted for this release!

PEOPLE...HOLD ON, with its eye-catching photography by Weldon A. McDougal III, was originally released in May 1972, which fared better on the charts (#13 R&B, #131 Pop). According to the liner notes, Frank Wilson said in an interview for Eddie's ULTIMATE COLLECTION (1998) that it was a concept album dedicated to black America. It opens with IF YOU LET ME (#17 R&B, #66 Pop), originally performed by Jimmy Ruffin. LET ME RUN INTO YOUR LONELY HEART is the funky B-side to EDDIE'S LOVE (#35 R&B, #77 Pop) while on DAY BY DAY, Eddie's vocals are once again multi-layered. GIRL YOU NEED A CHANGE OF MIND is the biggest hit off here (#13 R&B, #87 Pop) with its innovative use of multi-drums throughout the track and still a favorite among club goers. SOMEDAY WE'LL HAVE A BETTER WORLD has a gospel feel to it and reminiscent of Stevie Wonder's HEAVEN HELP US ALL with Eddie singing in his natural register. MY PEOPLE...HOLD ON is a major highlight here with African drums opening the song and on the break and DATE WITH THE RAIN is another dance favorite among today's club goers. I'M ON THE SIDELINE has Eddie's voice once again multi-layered throughout the song and the album closes with JUST MEMORIES, the B-side to IF YOU LET ME and with it's operatic opening, remains another highlight to this album.

EDDIE KENDRICKS (#5 R&B, #18 Pop), released in May 1973, charted higher than the above, especially on the strength of the #1 R&B/Pop hit KEEP ON TRUCKIN', most recently resurrected and remixed by DJ Spinna for the MOTOWN: REMIXED compilation (2005). ONLY ROOM FOR TWO opens the album and the Caribbean-sounding DARLING COME BACK HOME (#26 R&B, #67 Pop), was another hit off here. EACH DAY I CRY A LITTLE is IMO Eddie's finest performance and also a Quiet Storm favorite while CAN'T HELP WHAT I AM is a light tune on being who he is. ANY DAY NOW (originally performed by Chuck Jackson) and NOT ON THE OUTSIDE (originally performed by the Moments) are underrated remakes of soul classics and Eddie makes it his own on both selections and the album closes with WHERE DO YOU GO (BABY), a beautiful Pam Sawyer/Gloria Jones composition about Eddie wondering where his woman is when he isn't there.

This compilation doesn't include BOOGIE DOWN which followed EDDIE KENDRICKS, but according to the liner notes, it will be released in another double-disc set! In the meantime, we get to hear FOR YOU, released November 1974 (#8 R&B, #108 Pop). It opens with the laid-back PLEASE DON'T GO AWAY, while ONE TEAR (#8 R&B, #71 Pop), originally for Marvin Gaye and SHOESHINE BOY (#1 R&B, #18 Pop) became the biggest hits off of this album. DEEP AND QUIET LOVE is an underrated Quiet Storm performance while LET YOURSELF GO is another underrated funk performance. I played this one at one of my parties and the response was amazing! IF YOU THINK (YOU CAN) has great word play throughout the song. IF is a great remake originally performed by Bread and TIME IN A BOTTLE is just as good, originally performed by Jim Croce, which ends the album.

Folks, if you are not by now, this wonderfully packaged 2-CD set will make or renew your interest in Eddie Kendricks, IMO the greatest tenor that ever graced a record!

5 out of 5 stars In a word - EXCELLENT!!.......2006-03-12

For years, we fans of the legendary Eddie James Kendricks (1939-1992) have prayed, written Motown endless letters and even waged an online petition to have this come to pass - to have all of Eddie's original albums reissued on CD. I've always felt that Eddie's career as a soloist was never given its proper due because in the eyes of the industry, his work with the Temptations seemed to supercede everything he did on his own, and that was truly not fair. They wanted to boil his career down to two hits - "Keep On Truckin'" and "Boogie Down" - and like nothing else he did was worthwhile. Motown continued to contribute to this mode of thinking as well. Please! That is as far from the truth as you can get!

But finally, after so very long, some of Eddie's original albums are now available on CD. In this collection, we have four remastered EJK CDs from the 1970s:

ALL BY MYSELF (1971)
PEOPLE...HOLD ON (1972)
EDDIE KENDRICKS (1973)
FOR YOU (1974)

These four albums are chock full of quality material by Eddie, all produced by the team of Frank Wilson and Leonard Caston (except Eddie's debut LP, which was produced by Wilson alone). Looking for early popular cuts by EJK like "Can I", "This Used To Be The Home Of Johnnie Mae", "If You Let Me", "Girl You Need A Change of Mind", "Keep On Truckin'" and "Shoeshine Boy"? Well, like the compilation of hits CDs that Motown has issued previously, those songs are all here...but these are the albums where those choice cuts came from. Chronologically, the album BOOGIE DOWN from late 1973 - early '74 was completed and issued before FOR YOU. But due to the timing of the tracks on that album, BOOGIE DOWN couldn't be included here...but it will be in the next volume of Eddie's works, which will be released later on in '06. Be on the lookout for it.

I am very happy with this collection, and the remastering is nearly flawless. Only complaint I have is the remastering of the exquisite ballad "Each Day I Cry A Little" from the EDDIE KENDRICKS album - a song so hauntingly beautiful, it has to be one of the very best in the entire EJK catalog. However, the way it's mixed here has too much echo, the background singers' vocals are brought so far to the front at times you don't hear much of Eddie, and the strings are a bit overpowering, especially halfway through and towards the end of the song. I have the original vinyl LP and the mix is somewhat different. But other than that, this is a perfect collection of four of Eddie's excellent Motown solo albums. For anyone who has only brought Eddie's greatest hits CDs in the past and craved to have more, this is an absolute MUST for you to own!! Want to know why Eddie is one of the greatest R&B legends of all time and why he will never be forgotten? Song after song on this set shows the listener that this was no ordinary singer - here's the proof. Listen and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Super Compilation on 2 cd's!.......2005-10-19

Here we have another prime example of the Hip O Select Motown music. Eddie Kendricks first 4 albums. Super hit songs with fine arrangements sung by the greatest R&B falsetto that ever lived. He is accompanied by the funkiest of brothers in the band. The 24 bit stereo remastering is super solid. Only 5000 sets available. What more can I say? Some people say that they like Motown music.

    Album Description

Keep On Truckin' is Caustic Resin's sixth full length album since their incarnation over a decade ago. The album was recorded at Audio-Lab in Garden City, Idaho by Jon Mullin (Doug Martsch, The Suffocation Keep), with some additional recording done at The Space in Ballard, WA, and tracking & mixing at Hall of Justice in Seattle by Phil Ek (Modest Mouse, Les Savy Fav, et al.) & Brett Netson. "Keep On Truckin'" was produced by Caustic Resin & Jim Roth, with Jim engineering. The band consists now of Netson (guitar and vocals), Mike Johnson (bass and guitar), and Pat Perkins (drums). Netson explains the difference between Keep On Truckin, and previous releases: "The last two were sort of experiments. This one is more grim, sort of outwardly vicious. Not as self-involved. Been living in LA off and on, there's different kinds of things that are in your face on a daily basis. A lot less space. A variety of dangers. The record kind of reflects that." Tom Romich and Jim ! Roth (Voodoo Gearshift, The Delusions) round out the artists involved, with Tom performing vocals on "8th St." and bass on other tracks, and Jim playing steel guitar on "Message to Shareholders" and "Viva La Causa!" with the former also receiving treatment from him on moog.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars TRUCKIN'.......2005-03-19

Caustic Resin sound like a postmortem Creedance Clearwater Revival spiked with a lunatic Hank Williams and blessed with a singing cowboy's sense of balladry. Mind you, this is rock at it's purest drenched in guitar drone and vocal manipulation, haunting and wailing lyrics, and song hooks that strangle. "Message To Shareholders" is a wrenching blast of Brett Netson's vocals and guitar that sounds like being trapped against a wall while a ferocious animal drools in your face. "Fry Like Ace Jones", with it's romantic western tinged dramatics, sounds like your executioner breaking out into a pretty sundown-y ballad just before he drops the floor out from under you. At first, the title track, "Keep On Truckin" (omit Eddie Kendricks from your mind), is an elaborate commercial sounding "All the Young Dudes" worship anthem, on repeated listens, it sounds like the band making a melodic attempt to reach a genuine musical scale with mock rock star Netson passing around shares of rock and roll idolization as he nearly croons and howls masterfully a swirling blend of pop and delusion. It's been a while since an album has put me away like this. On the inside of the lo-frills CD cover is an interior photo of the band's 'tour bus'. It's the same vehicle I saw parked just outside the door of the small club where I saw Caustic Resin play in Buffalo, New York a few years ago; an eyesore of a van loaded to the brim with the stuff bag ladies dream of, looking like a 1972 time warp through an Iraqui war zone. I thought, some hippies must have driven in from the hills and they'll be lucky if the cops don't come and haul this heap away.

    5 out of 5 stars Get In!.......2003-06-28

This record is totally killer! At first I thought it may be simply good, but I soon realized that it's completely awesome! I saw them play live because I knew I had to hear them playing these songs, and it was so good, I had to go see them play again! "Fly Me To The Moon" was a really good album, but it's almost too hard to believe how good "Keep On Truckin'" is. It's very similar to looking at the sun, you should never completely focus your eyes on it, but simply have a general knowledge of it being there and what it's like, or risk injury to yourself. That's the way in which you should handle thinking about how totally mindblowing this record is. You probably should have a listen, unless you want to do something like be really stupid.

5 out of 5 stars Caustic continue to astound........2003-06-27

Okay, this album is quite a bit different from my last favorite, The Medicine's All Gone, but still recognizably Caustic Resin.
It seems like bands growing and changing is a problem for some people, but who wants a repeat of another album? That just seems like a dumb way to listen to music.
after listening to this record a few times I now believe this to be the best record Brett and company have made, I also noticed that they now have a killer video on their causticresin.com site, and all I can say is, way to go!

    3 out of 5 stars Caustic delirium..........2003-05-07

Now don't get me wrong, "Fly me to the moon," and "The medicine's all gone" were fabulous albums, unfortunately this one is not cut from the same cloth. If you want to hear some good music from "Caustic" check out the two albums I mentioned above, but don't waste your money on this one. This album never seems to get going, lacks rhythm, and is a disappointment. I thought it might grow on me after a few listens as some of there other material does, but it never did. Some of the guitar work is good, but Brett is capable of so much better. See Built to Spill's "Ultimate Alternative Wavers," or "Perfect From Now On" for other work by Brett that is simply amazing.

1 out of 5 stars Put down the bong and get out the needle................2003-04-02

you're going to want to end it all after hearing this drivel. Once this band had a couple brain cells. Now all we're left with is the smelly carcass.

4 out of 5 stars Music the Whole Family Can Enjoy.......2006-02-17

If you're looking for something that isn't Eminem to play for your kids in the car, perhaps some good ol' trucking music is your speed. My two boys (3 & 5) love to sing along. Give me 40 Acres is a huge hit, and some of the ballads are laugh out loud corny. Definitely worth the minimal investment for all these great tunes.

4 out of 5 stars Great Songs but incomplete info.......2005-08-14

Wow! What a great compiliation of trucking songs. It's a pity they didn't include more artist info & recording dates. (We IPod'ers need this info.)

4 out of 5 stars hit the road jack.......2002-02-28

this could be consolidated to an AMAZING single cd compilation. as it stands, there's a lot of filler on this; some of which has little or nothing to do with truck driving. kansas city? tie a yellow ribbon? a harmonica driven version of take me home country roads? damn it, neither john denver nor tony orlando was ever behind the wheel of an 18 wheeler, so why are they here??? other gripes include duplication of the same song by different artists in basically the same arrangements, and some just plain ordinary boring numbers. that said, you get lots of red sovine & dave dudley, some cool tunes by minnie pearl, grandpa jones, and the willis brothers, and a killer (no pun intended) stretch on disc 2 concerning trucks wrecks. unless you are an insane truck driving music collector (and frankly, who isnt?) (billy joel isnt, thats fer sure), this will be good enough for you. PUT DOWN THE STROKES CD AND BUY THIS, YA PUTZ!!

4 out of 5 stars The best truckin' value for your dollar.......2000-01-13

Largely (though by no means entirely) made up of gems from the great Starday catalogue, "Truckin' On" has its flaws but probably stands as the most complete collection of trucker country to be found. At 52 songs on 2 discs the pluses are numerous, including most of the great hits from the likes of Red Sovine, the Willis Brothers, Del Reeves, and other giants of the genre. The collection also includes several lesser-known tracks, such as Minnie Pearl's rarely-heard "Giddy-Up-Go Answer." There are two main complaints about the collection. For one, a number of tracks are represented not in their original versions but with re-recordings. "Movin' On" is here, for instance, but as recorded by Mike Lunceford, not in its original Merle Haggard rendition. Same with "Convoy" and a few others. In addition, a few important artists are completely unrepresented, including Red Simpson and Dick Curless. These are minor complaints, though. For $20 you get 2 1/2 hours of trucker country, most of which is top-notch, and that's value-for-money in my book any day of the week.

I couldn't find another way to ASK you about this CD Keep On Truckin'. Point is I've searched quite long to find on CD with the title Keep On Truckin' released by, I suppose, EMI. I found a CD here, however I am not sure if it is it. Could you be so kind as to show me a cover and/or list the contents so that I might be sure of my selection. Your soonest reply shall be most valuable. Kindest regards, Pavel
