Product Description
From 1983 to 1986. The Voice, Vern Gosdin had a string of hits for the now defunct Compleat label. These records emphasized close harmony and heartache. During this period, Gosdin also cut an extraordinary Gospel album simply called The Gospel Album.
After his time with Compleat, Vern gave the country music world hits such as Do You Believe Me Now, Set Em Up Joe, Chiseled In Stone, I'm Still Crazy, and re-cuts of If You're Gonna Do Me Wrong (Do It Right), and Today My World Slipped Away. But it's Vern's Compleat recordings, as exemplified on The Gospel Album, that are arguably his best work.
Music Mill Entertainment has agreed with Vern Gosdin Enterprises/VGM Records to distribute this long unavailable and in-demand piece.

Wonderful !!!!.......2007-07-07
This was my first introduction to Selah, and I am so-o-o happy I purchased this CD! Very poignant lyrics and beautiful music. My favorites are Gentle Healer and Glory, but really the whole CD is just wonderful. You won't be disappointed.
Excellent - contemporary twist to old favorites - making them new all over again!.......2007-06-22
I will probably always be one to recommend a Selah album, because I grew up in a church visited yearly by Nicol and Todd's parents, Congo missionaries Jim and Nancy Smith and used to hear the whole family sing way back when (in fact, I think my parents have an old record of hymns the family put out years ago!). That being said, this album is amazing! I've been listening to it over and over the last couple of weeks, hearing new layers every time. I love beautifully written lyrics - the mix of these classics with the voices of the Selah members and their duet partners is matchless.
At first listen, "Bless the Broken Road" stood out as my favorite, but then I listened more closely to "All My Tears," which I'd surprisingly never heard before. Now it stands out as my favorite on the album, esp. with Kim Hill's folksy sound, and one of my favorite songs ever.
Completely a stand-out album - so much depth and breadth.
Oh - and for those that didn't know, Nicol stepped out to raise her family and support her husband at Moody Bible Institute's grad school. She's worked some on solo stuff, too.
Christain Music.......2007-05-16
This is a from the heart CD. The song Bless the Broken Road would be applicable to everyone who has traveled a rocky road to find the peace and joy a Christian experiences. Another song, profound, outright addresses death and burial. Sounds gruesome, but it is awesome. No rock bands here, just beautifully orchestrated music that is uplifting and encouraging.
Love Selah~.......2007-05-09
Loved most of the CD. Not their best in my opinion, but worth having.
There are some great songs here.
Keeps getting better.......2007-04-11
This "album" is their best yet. Selah fans won't be disappointed.

Columbia Records rushed this compilation of patriotic and inspirational favorites into production in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks. The title song is a new version by Celine Dion similar to the performance she gave on the Tribute to Heroes telethon, while John Mellencamp's "Peaceful World" is included in an alternate, acoustic treatment. Each listener may find his or her own favorites, but few will be left unmoved by a selection that also includes Bruce Springsteen's "Land of Hope and Dreams," Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge over Troubled Water," and renderings of "America the Beautiful," "This Land Is Your Land," and "Amazing Grace" by, respectively, Frank Sinatra, Pete Seeger, and Tramaine Hawkins. Bill Withers's "Lean on Me" closes the disc on a plainspoken note that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of rescuers and other Americans since the tragedies. A back-cover note promises that a "substantial portion of the proceeds received by Sony Music [Columbia's parent company] from sales of this album will be donated to the Twin Towers Fund." --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Blown away............2007-03-06
I am not a Celine Dion fan normally, but stumbled onto this mix for many of the other titles on this CD. The brief download does not give her version of God Bless America justice. This arrangement builds slowly, eliciting "what the heck are you listening to?" comments and grows until anyone in listening range has goose bumps. I played it while stopped for hours on the freeway in front of Moore Park College where the long lines formed for Ronald Reagan's casket review and people on the side of the road actually gathered around the car and asked me to replay it. A must for any fan of patriotic music.
Uplifting!.......2005-06-20
This is a very nice patriotic CD with some great songs. My favorites are God Bless America, sung by Celine Dion. America The Beautful, sung by Frank Sinatra. This Land Is Your Land, sung by Peter Seeger. Peaceful World, sung by John Mellencamp. Blowin' In The Wind, sung by Bob Dylan. Bridge Oer Troubled Water, sung by Simon & Garfunkel. Good Bless The U.S.A, sung by Lee Greenwood. And The Star-Spangled Banner, sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The songs are all beautiful and uplifting!
A Good Americana Compilation.......2003-10-27
This compilation was made soon after the 9/11 in a wake of patriotic feelings among Americans. It comprises songs of different genres, from rock ballads ("Peaceful World" by John Mellencamp, "Lean on Me" by Bill Withers) to ballads ("Bridge over Troubled Water" by Simon&Garfunkel), to big Americana hits ("God Bless America" by Celine Dion, "America the Beautiful" by Frank Sinatra, "This Land Is Your Land" by Pete Seeger, "We Shall Overcome" by Mahalia Jackson) to the National Anthem "The Star Spangled Banner" by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, plus "Hero" by Mariah Carey, "There's a Hero" by Billy Gilman, and a few more.
This CD is a good compilation of songs that may lift the spirits of the nation, as well as some truly inspirational melodies. Performances by Tramaine Hawkins ("Amazing Grace"), Billy Gilman, Celine Dion, Simon&Garfunkel, Bill Withers are the gems of this CD. The same can be said about the National Anthem, though you might find some acappella version (by Lee Ann Rimes, for example) not less appealing.
Personally I bought this CD because of Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA". But this turned out to be the worst track. It is probably some remix. Almost nothing is left from the original version, neither its marching touch, nor the integrity that left your skin covered with goosebumps, inspired you and made you realise the true spirit of American patriotism. The version from this CD is more on the jazz, relaxed side, which is killing for such a song.
On the whole, this CD deserves your attention if you need a compilation of Americana music, or at least a flavour of it.
A great CD, powerful and moving.......2003-10-24
True to its title the music CD God Bless America is a masterful tribute to America. This collection of patriotic music includes many soul-stirring songs; I especially like the selections by Lee Greenwood, Frank Sinatra, and Bill Withers. All of the songs on this CD are powerful and will remind you how great this country truly is.
God Bless America is great for working, driving, or listening to all by itself. I guarantee that you will not regret purchasing this collection of American songs. This CD draws together an immense pool of talent and is extraordinarily successful at illustrating the greatest nation in the world.
Moving Patriotic tribute!!!.......2003-05-25
Well done! Loved Celine Dion's version of God Bless America in tribute for her adopted county. Pete Seeger's This land is your land is equally great. Has the beloved Lee Greenwood's God Bless the USA!

By this time in her career, Whitney Houston had a formula sound, and here she leans on it hard, surrounding herself with adult contemporary heavy-hitters like Diane Warren and Babyface. This wasn't the monster her previous records were, most notably The Bodyguard soundtrack, even though it seems to be an overt attempt at satisfying the same audience. Her voice is as crystalline as ever, but overall it seems a somewhat soulless effort, even though the themes are much more secular than she's braved before. --Scott Wilson

I love Whitney.......2007-04-24
I believe that it is very hard to top a huge commerical success such as the Bodyguard. I bought this CD when it first came out and I liked it then and still now. Whitney is a true vocal talent. R&B, pop, and gospel are all genres that she can perform. You go girl!

Whitney Houston at her "Best" I Love this album. I listen to this CD in my home,I also listen at it in my car. It is Fantastic! I highly recomend
this CD. If you love gospel music, grab it! I sing the songs in my head day and night even when the music is not on. I Love anything from Whitney!
Awesome.......2006-10-21
I have listened to this soundtrack over and over again. I Love the Lord, Step by Step, I Go to the Rock, Hold on, Help is on the Way. These Songs are my favorites. Step by Step helped me through a very difficult time. I love Whitney Houston and the gift that she has been blessed with. I pray that she will bless the world with more gospel music in the future.
introducing whitney houston.......2006-08-09
i've had this album for years and i'm listening to it now writing this review. i've never watched the movie but the preacher's wife soundtrack is brilliant. whitney takes on gospel and wins--by a mile. every track in the album is good, trhey still sound great over five years later. and the good news is it only goes up from that level. every song is soulful and showcase a mature, strong whitney who has a few collaborations with the georgia mass choir and a few other artists.
it's not as famous as the bodyguard soundtrack
look out for cissy houston on the album, you can hear the resemblance.
Go Whitney!.......2006-05-14
I agree with another online reviewer who simply says "Let The Angel Sing" and I reiterate their opinion that "I Love The Lord", sung by Miss Houston will make the hair on your arms stand up! Whitney is absolutely amazing and she should be. On this particular performance, Whitney is not just a Diva, she is in her element! Her origins go back to the choir of her youth, under the direction of none other than her own mother, Cissy Houston, the awesome soprano from the "Sweet Inspirations" and former back up singer for Arehta Franklin, the "Queen" of Soul. Whitney's gospel performance is awesome and will be a classic for years to come.

This double-disc reissue documents one of the more curious careers in country music. Both 1978's White Mansions and 1980's The Legend of Jesse James are Southern song cycles that were conceived by Britain's Paul Kennerley, then an unknown songwriter who somehow recruited a high-profile cast for each. A Civil War saga from the Southern perspective, White Mansions suffers from caricature and cliché but benefits from signature contributions by Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, and Eric Clapton. Jesse James has more focus and narrative momentum, with Levon Helm, Johnny Cash, and Emmylou Harris in lead roles. Though the albums are more noteworthy for artistic ambition than memorable material, Kennerley subsequently became a successful Nashville songwriter and Harris's husband from 1985 to 1993. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Legend of Jesse James.......2007-05-13
I had heard of this album in 1981 or so. Although I have the LP I wanted the
CD also. I really like the story telling aspect of this cd. Starting with the
first tract completely through the last. Also, the caliber of the singers
included really pleased me. Charlie Daniels, Johnny Cash and Levon Helm's
voices are so well suited for the characters that they portray. It also made
me interested enough to do a little history reading on the real Jesse James.
History would be a lot more interesting to people, I think, if more were
presented in such a well done way.
A Gem.......2007-04-11
My husband bought the LP years ago and pretty much wore it out. When I bought this CD for him as a gift he was thrilled to hear elements of the recordings he says he never heard on the LP. We are both very happy with this CD and have told many of our friends and relatives who are interested in the history of the US during the civil war and post civil war period. I wish they would make a video of this even if they have to recast the parts with contemporary singers to replace those who have left this planet.
Two Magnificent and Historically Accurate Song Cycles About the American South.......2006-09-01
I accidentally ran into the cassette version of "The Story of Jesse James" probably shortly after the cassette was released. My 35 year old daughter remembers well hearing it played over and over again, when she was a child. Naturally, the tape finally wore out and I had no idea where to find another copy. I felt an unbelievable sense of loss because of this for many years, until I recently decided to search "Jesse" on Amazon.com, hoping to find that it had been re-released as a CD.
When I found that "White Mansions", which I had never even heard of before, had been combined into a double CD set with "Jesse", I was ecstatic and I immediately ordered two copies of the set, one for my car and one for my house. I found that I had to immerse myself in hearing "Jesse", until my "thirst" for it had been satisfied, before I could bring myself to listen seriously to "White Mansions". However, the Civil War/the War Between the States/the War of Northern Aggression/the Late Unpleasantness, as it is variously called, has always extremely interested me and filled me with great sadness, especially since most people today do not understand the complexities of the war, its many heart-breaking aspects, and how lasting its influence has been on our country.
These song cycles are replete with superb music and equally superb singers whose voices fit the characters who tell the story of the Civil War from the Southern white point of view in "White Mansions" and the story of Jesse James and the James-Younger Gang in "The Story of Jesse James". These song cycles are most highly recommended by me, however, not only because of their superb music and vocalists, but also because they are historically so accurate. I am a history buff and I know Civil War history and the lives and activities of the James brothers and the Younger brothers very well. My only bone to pick with the cycles is the song "High Walls" on "Jesse". Although I enjoy the song greatly, I personally do not believe that Jesse James ever was so self-pitying, although he probably did regret the path that he had chosen, after he had matured and had become a loving husband and father who had decided to settle down on a farm with his family.
I most highly recommend this set to anyone who appreciates the best in country music, to anyone who is interested in the Civil War, especially those who are interested in the different points of view of its Southern caucasian socio-economic groups, and/or to those who are interested in the war's resulting production of some of our nation's most notorious outlaws. I am now also so emotionally involved in "White Mansions", as well as in "Jesse", that today, I literally burst out with a loud exclamation concerning what had just been sung in one of its songs, while I was driving my car, startling my friend who was riding with me and embarrassing myself!
A secret treasure!.......2006-02-17
I bought "The legend of Jesse James" vinyl LP in 1980 when I was 17 and was immediately struck by the solid writing, emotional narrative and excellent musicianship found on this concept album. I remember "One more shot" got some airplay on country radio stations at the time, but without the rest of the album to provide the appropriate context, the single didn't have much impact. One listen to the entire album, and it's hard not to be impressed by this collection of country/folk/rock jewels.
This 2-CD set was my first introduction to "White Mansions", Paul Kennerley's original Southern Americana musical history lesson. This album is as well produced and the song writing as strong as on "Jesse James". However, this collection is not as emotionally engaging as the tracks on "Jesse James". The performances are all first rate and Waylon Jennings' vocals on this album are perhaps his best ever and proves that he was at his peak in the late 1970s!
Anyone that listens to this compilation of two great country concept albums will become instant fans. I sincerely hope more people will find this secret treasure.
The CD to save if your house was on fire!.......2005-12-04
White Mansions and especially The Legend of Jesse James gives me chills when I listen to it. I grew up in Clay County,Missouri right up the road from the James Farm. This music is so authentic in the style and the way the voices sound as if they are truly Missouri locals. Anybody who knows the true outlaw story of the James Boys knows this cd is so dead on it will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Jesse James is not just a train robber but a true southern farmer turned guerilla who just wanted his money back from the Yankee Feds. This CD has the best I believe of Waylon & Jessi, Johnny Cash and Levon Helm singing in a southern rock style that will have you swilling sweetea out of a mason jar. If you like hog callers and mules, tobacco and whiskey culture and realize the Civil War really started on the southern Frontier in Missouri, buy this you will play it for years!!!

Customer Reviews:
Good concept, marred by dated productions.......2006-11-27
This CD was a good concept, but the early '90's production values, with the soprano sax solo (god help us) at the beginning of Joe Cocker's other wise notable version of "Sorry.." and the vocals shrouded in harsh, excessive reverb are the worst of the crimes. For the most part the new versions shed no new light on the songs, and in most cases screw them up with overly-synthed arrangements.
The few exceptions, though, are entirely worth the price of this CD, first and foremost being "Sacrifice" by Sinead O'Connor. The synth accompaniment is sensitive and well-guaged, and, despite the excessive reverb on the vocals, her performance is emotional without being oversung, and simply sublime. Also, Kate Bush's "Rocket Man" is charming and approprately ethereal in places, and Oleta Adams' piano-based performance on "Don't Let the Sun go Down on Me" is a welcome respite from the overly-electronic sounds on the rest of the album. If they could only remake this CD with modern production values, like using real acoustic instruments instead of synths and applying vocal reverb judiciously, that would be great.
This CD deserves a sequel, possibly a boxset.......2006-01-26
Congratulations,by stumbling on these CD reviews, you've manifested at least some level of inquisitivenss and or appreciation for other artists interpreting Elton and Bernies music. There's a reason, these two artists have built a serious classic body of work. Their music has reached the rare elevation of music defined as standards. This criteria used to be reserved for writers as Irving Berlin,Cole Porter, etc.
Music that tends to remain vibrant through the ages. Elton and Bernie's creations, given a 30+ year legacy, more then qualifies.
One ponders the music Lennon and McCartney would have created , if they had collaborated post Beatles. No one has to wonder about that with Elton and Bernie, its all out there. Their music creations continue to charm and reward the public as both these artists grow broader in life experiences. That said, what makes this CD a classic? It's the marvelous body of continually rewarding work interpreted by a wide range of legendary artists. Whoever selected this rooster has my eternal appreciation.
Sinead O'Conner gives " Sacrifice" a truly haunting and spiritual quality. It's simply one of the best recorded performances I've yet to hear from her. When listening to this track, please don't ignore the keyboard contributions of Paul Golding. This track alone is worth the price of admission. Same goes for Kate Bush's interpretation of " Rocket man". I'd love to hear her record an entire CD of Elton and Bernies tunes. Sting's version of " Come Down in Time " is breathtaking. Pay close attention to the piano contributions of Nancy Treadlight. This track wouldn't have achieved the same level without her artistry. Kudos to Hugh Padgham for the mix.
The Who and Beach boys turn in a yeoman's job with their choices. Neither group dissappoints. Wilson Phillips deserve special note. It's truly a discovery to hear their interpretion of "Daniel". Although considered a " light weight' pop group. They turn in a steller performance of Daniel. Their haromonies are magnificant and a female interpretion of the tune was long overdo. It makes the lyrics even more delicious. Honors for this track must be bestowed to another musical legend, Mr. Glen Ballard. Joe Cocker is the next artist to nail these body of work with his delivery of "Sorry..." One could almost believe the song was created exclusively for him. Of special note, is the sax work contributed by Deric Dyer. His licks are truly amazing and add to the tracks success.
Tina Turner delivers her version of "The Bitch is Back". She worked this tune to perfection through countless concert performances. Absolutely a classic and so interesting to hear a female interpretation. Rod Stewart delivers his version of "Your Song". Rod is a consumate artist. He makes everything seem easy and understated but its his huge talent that makes this perception deceiving. This tune is a perfect example. One listening with untrained ears might assume he phoned this in. However, it's just the opposite his artistry nails this tune in the manner it was intended. Thanks Rod! Bruce Hornsby's vocal interpretation, dare I say, exceeds Eltons. I know this statement is offensive to some but I stand by it. Just his keyboard work, delivered as an instrumental track, would have placed this track close to the top.
Oleta Adams simply kills "Don't let the sun go down'. Her lyrical/ musical interpretation makes this song a gem.
Finally, there's Phil Collins, Hall&Oats, George Michael and Bon Jovi tracks which I consider bonus tracks. They're really not needed but they don't detract either. Somewhat intertaining at best. My only wish is the a second CD ( box set ? ) with this concept is released sometime in the future. There's certainly enough E&B tunes out there ripe for the picking. I'd also suggest an instrumental project interpreting E&B tunes with leading jazz artists has a lot of potential. That's really the key to the greatness of this body of work. The lyrics could stand alone as published poetry and the music could also succeed strictly as instrumental versions. Putting the two together and including artists of this magnitude on this CD i absolutely inspiring.
"Adult contemporary" collection that could use sequel... .......2005-12-22
To me, it makes for pleasant listening by well known artists during the time of release. I like all of it, but my highlights are Kate Bush (who recorded "Candle In the Wind" on the CD single for "Rocket Man"), Joe Cocker, Tina Turner, Hall & Oates, Oleta Adams, Sinead O'Connor, Phil Collins, and George Michael (who would cover "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me" with Elton 2 years later). Due to the massive amount of material Elton and Bernie wrote (before and since) as well as different ways some of these songs could be reinterpreted, they should put out a second volume to it, esp. after hearing Tim McGraw doing "Tiny Dancer". A lot of the early songs have a lot of R&B and country elements that could take his songs into directions not on this collection, geared towards adult contemporary circa 1990.
The Who's performance is decent, and wound up on their box set.
Considering the "Face to Face" shows since, one has to wonder why Billy Joel wasn't asked at the time.
I think that his 90s-00s output has been great, esp. in the past few years. From "The One" to "Peachtree Road", you can picture other people doing some of these songs as well as revisiting some of the lesser known songs from the 70s and 80s.
Finally, Jeff Buckley had done "Curtains" from "Captain Fantastic" that has circulated in bootleg circles, but is amazing even if the recording quality isn't that great, but would be worth putting on a "Vol 2".
Interesting but not perfect...........2005-11-23
I stumbled upon this album again recently, it was bought for me as a birthday gift as I had long since lost the original.
I bought it on it's initial release in 1991 and on the whole I loved it. I tend to judge a great album on how many times I want to listen to it from beginning to end, This album doesn't get that kind of play. It tends to be one of those albums I listen to with the, "skip track" function on the remote control never far from my index finger! There are some fantastic tracks and the partnership of John and Taupin definitely deserves some celebration, it just seems it was not entirely pitched in the right way.
The tracks are stunning and there are some fantastic reworkings by highly individual artists. I think particularly of Kate Bush, The Who, Joe Cocker, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Oleta Adams, Sinead O'Connor and George Michael.
Equally there are some badly hashed songs by artists who are either uninspiring, out of place or just plain not good enough; to illustrate these points I think of Phil Collins, Jon Bon Jovi and Wilson Phillips respectively. Shame becuase had the producers had the courage to find just a few more well suited artists of a high calibre then I would be writing a 5 star review.
Having said that I am much more happy with this than not, it is a great celebratory peice and these days you could always just slap your favourites on your MP3 or iPod!
Worth a listen or two, even if only to get you exploring Elton's early career which is by far the better part of his years on the music scene.
When it's good, it's very very good..........2005-11-02
...so why include the Beach Boys? Took all the guts out of "Crocodile Rock" and turned it into a Beach Boys tune, for the love of God--I'm shocked that Elton and Bernie didn't denounce this travesty outright. Fortunately this is the one true stinker in this tribute album--"Border Song", "Saturday Night's Alright", "Sacrifice", all do justice to the tunes while showing the individual interpretations of Eric Clapton, The Who and Sinead O'Connor, while Oleta Adams and Joe Cocker come close to suprassing Elton's original versions of "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" and "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word." Kudos also to Jon Bon Jovi who made me look at "Levon" in a whole new light. As for that other somewhat questionable choice of artist, Wilson Phillips have nothing to hang their heads about--their cover of "Daniel" may not completely capture the bittersweet mood, but then, Elton's original vocal didn't quite do it for me, either--my own choice to cover this particular tune would've been Bette Midler.

One of the more creative, successful tribute albums, A Vision Shared was originally released to coincide with a PBS program that premiered in 1988. Packing some serious heavyweights onto one CD, the record features covers of Guthrie and Leadbelly tunes by, among others, Little Richard, Brian Wilson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and U2. The 14 tracks consist of mostly well known tunes, and it's fascinating to hear what the artists have done to them. Particularly exciting is a supercharged version of Leadbelly's "Rock Island Line" by Little Richard with Fishbone and U2's take on Guthrie's "Jesus Christ." --Ian Landau

Good Compiliation.......2006-01-09
I enjoy all the cuts on this compilation. It is fun to hear the variety of artists perform their works. A rockin' version of Rock Island line from Little Richard that is worth the whole album. Funny how the Bourgeois Blues still seems relevant.........
LITTLE RICHARD WITH FISHBONE STANDS OUT.......2005-08-20
IF YOU LIKE PURE, OLD SCHOOL ROCK 'N' ROLL, PICK UP THIS ALBUM FOR LITTLE RICHARD'S AWESOME RECORDING OF 'ROCK ISLAND LINE'. IN MY OPINION, IT IS THE TRACK THAT STANDS OUT MORE THAN ANY OTHERS. IF YOU DON'T APPRECIATE THAT GENRE, YOU MAY NOT APPRECIATE THAT TRACK AS MUCH. I ZEROED IN ON THE ALBUM MAINLY FOR LITTLE RICHARD'S TRACK, ALTHOUGH THE REST ARE FINE.
tried and true.......2004-10-10
I must have bought this on cassette back in the late eighties out of a bargain bin, a bargain bin! It would hve been a bargain at full price. I played the cassette to death and now I've bought the CD.
Almost every song has life to it, not one a simple re-singing. Sweet Honey in the Rock's "Sylvie" still gives me pause after all these years. Lovely. The U2, the Emmylou Harris and the Springsteen also rank high and I'm not a rabid fan of any of those people.
The album is a wonderful pairing of musicians with timeless work of two masters. I have MANY CD's but I only keep a handful next to the player at all times and this is one of them.
Brian Wilson's version of Goonight Irene is amazing!.......2004-07-21
Brian Wilson really made that song his own. It sounds like a song he wrote it, and stands out from others on this album. It shows what a fine arranger he is. The primitive drums and synthesizers on that track reminds me of The Beach Boys Love You album.

Album Description
From 1983 to 1986. The Voice, Vern Gosdin had a string of hits for the now defunct Compleat label. These records emphasized close harmony and heartache. During this period, Gosdin also cut an extraordinary Gospel album simply called The Gospel Album.
After his time with Compleat, Vern gave the country music world hits such as Do You Believe Me Now, Set `Em Up Joe, Chiseled In Stone, I'm Still Crazy, and re-cuts of If You're Gonna Do Me Wrong (Do It Right), and Today My World Slipped Away. But it's Vern's Compleat recordings, as exemplified on The Gospel Album, that are arguably his best work.
Music Mill Entertainment has agreed with Vern Gosdin Enterprises/VGM Records to distribute this long unavailable and in-demand piece.

Vern Gosdin, The Gospel Album.......2006-06-27
This is on of the best gospel album's I have ever heard / I would recomend it to anyone. This man has a tremendous voice. I can see why they call him the voice
Beautiful singing but . . ........2004-06-19
It's great to see this album available on cd. Any fan of Vern Gosdin - which should mean any fan of great country singing - will love hearing the Voice in fine form. However, I found the '80s production to be stiff, almost freeze-dried on some songs. Nevertheless, the lead and harmony singing are so heartfelt and beautiful, and the price is so good, that if you are at all a fan of Vern, this is certainly worth the price.
Buy This CD.......2001-04-05
This is a great concept and timeless recording from one of the greatest country singers of all time. It bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary gospel and will appeal to gospel, country and bluegrass followers. Recorded in the early 80's and just recently released on CD, this recording is as fresh and natural as this morning's dew. Shining bright on this recording are the tight bluegrass harmony vocals which pepper up each tune and the slick guitar work of Ray Flacke. An exceptional effort !
The sweetest strains from "THE VOICE".......1999-05-22
If you were raised on these old-time gospel hymns, then this album is for you. I vividly remember as a small boy singing most of these songs with the congregation in that little country church. But, quite simply, this rendition by Vern Gosdin just can't be matched. He is one of the best vocal artist ever and he really shines on this collection. The more you listen to this album, the better it gets! Truly, a classic!

Songs of Endearment ... Rev. James Cleveland forever in our thoughts.......2005-09-12
What a great cd compilation!! All the songs (we sung in our choir) written expressively from Rev. James Cleveland (for the few exceptions and even those) complimented his vocals and spiritual heights to reach the audience who together with the Reverend reached and lifted their hands high to the Almighty Saviour. This cd is an everyday tool in my cd player, and these days it is needed. You won't ever walk alone. Hallelujah!
James Cleveland Greatest Choir.......2005-09-07
This CD is what good gospel music is all about, it reminds you of the times when our families were united, when children and parent talked together, prayed together and went to church together. Remember Sunday Dinners?
Gospel Music Will Never Fade like Worldly Fads.......2004-06-03
God truly has smiled on gospel music over the years. No matter where you are in this country and some parts of the world Gospel music has made its mark. There's nothing like waking up on Sunday mornings listening to the sounds of James Cleveland singing "Jesus is the best thing that ever happened". It goes on and on. If you are ever troubled and the spoken words of man
just wont do.... First call on Jesus and then listen to this CD
This has all the church songs you know...........2004-02-25
....plus the Cleveland Classics God has Smiled on Me, I Don't Feel No Ways Tired and Lord Help Me to Hold Out. But the choice of these, in my opinion, is Jesus is the Best Thing in which James banters (testifies, rather) between verse ('I heard Gladys Knight sing this, I changed the words'...and later I don't know who Gladys was talking about, but') and the congregational response is one of appreciation of how clever it was for Cleveland to adopt the tune for gospel, but also how true it feels to each listener, personally. Also, I think Gladys *did* manage to sneak in to do uncredited background harmonies to James. It was a rare moment, a great moment, captured on tape.
This is a CD of gospel greatness. Find it and get it.

Album Description
On November 8, 2005, Nashville-based Music Mill Entertainment will re-issue the three full-length projects recorded by rock pioneers, Glass Harp. Simultaneously released will be Glass Harp (1970), Synergy (1971) and It Makes Me Glad (1972) - all out-of-print for more than three decades.
Lewis Merenstein, who won a Grammy® for his work on Van Morrison's Moondance (also produced Spencer Davis Group, John Cale, Gladys Knight, others), originally produced all three sets by the progressive-rock trio. Recorded at Jimi Hendrix's Electric Lady Studios, the newly re-mastered volumes now contain bonus material of previously unreleased songs.
Glass Harp is known as much for its extended live jams and improvisations as for being the vehicle that gave rise to Contemporary Christian guitarist, singer and icon Phil Keaggy. Keaggy joined the band while still in high school and helped propel it from local to regional status and beyond. At its peak, Glass Harp toured with The Kinks (at Madison Square Garden), Iron Butterfly, Yes, Traffic, Humble Pie, Alice Cooper, Grand Funk Railroad, Ted Nugent and Chicago.
Phil Keaggy left Glass Harp in 1972 just after the release of It Makes Me Glad. The following year, after a brief stint with another influential Christian group Love Song, he recorded his first solo album, What a Day. Since then, Keaggy has released dozens of albums earning popular acclaim for his guitar virtuosity, songwriting and Beatle-esque vocal flavor. He also spent much of the `70's and `80's recording and performing with myriad Contemporary Christian artists while, in effect, helping to build the very healthy CCM genre.
Bassist Daniel Pecchio later co-founded the Cleveland rock outfit the Michael Stanley Band. The group enjoyed a ravenous local following and a reputation as a great live band. The pop charts also boasted several AOR/pop singles from the band in the early 1980's.
Drummer John Sferra worked as a solo artist and has sometimes performed as a member of Keaggy's band.
Glass Harp, Synergy and It Makes Me Glad will be released with all original artwork and sport updated liner notes.

Been Lookin' and Hopin' a LOOONNGG time.......2006-09-28
I remember my brother and I driving 25 miles through a snowstorm into Youngstown to see these guys play warm up for Billy Withers. Well, he didn't make it for the snow, so we and the crowd there had the absolute pleasure of enjoying a full evening of Glass Harp. Anyone who followed music in that part of the country will tell ya these guys were and are still GOOD. I don't know how or who found these but they oughta get a raise. Glad the masters were still intact.

Favorite High School Band.......2006-05-20
Being from Northern Ohio, I got to see the Glass Harp perform in my high school and in Cleveland Public Hall with Humble Pie. I was thrilled to see their three albums finally reissued on CD.
This bare-bones threesome could play. Beatlesque vocals. Assertive druming. Tight, clean bass lines. And arguablably the best guitar playing around anywhere, anytime. Glass Harp had an imaginative, progressive sound and style back then. This first recording always remained my favorite. I never get tired of listening to Children's Fantasy.
Fantastic moment in Rock history.......2006-01-29
Glass Harp delivers the goods in classic 1960's style.
The musicianship is incredible and the compositions are solid. Please bear in mind that these guys were quite young when this recording was made, these are musicians, not dudes who want to be in a band really bad. This music just gets better with time, there is variety here - not just hard rock. Phil Keaggy went on to record much much more after this, Highly recommended!

Wise words and cool tunes.......2007-03-28
I guess the most obvious way to differentiate Harry Manx from his peers is his use of Indian instruments, and in paricular the Mohan Veena. Well, actually what's unique and very refreshing is the way he integrates those sounds into a fusion of Blues and Americana that remind me of some of the other artists I love, but also stands out from them.
For all the exoticism of the instrumentation, Harry's songs are actually pretty accessible, and like the best songs are a bit mysterious in their actual meaning but give you a feeling that he's really saying something. Don't Take His Name Away is a terrific song about life and death and memory. I wonder who it's about.
Another standout song is A Single Spark, which has the trademark Indian sound mixed with an emotive blues sound and an intriguing, memorable lyric.
There's not a bad song on the album, though It Takes a Tear, a duet with a singer who's not really interesting enough, comes closest to being one you might want to skip past.
I like the production, even though it sounds at times almost too clean and bright for Blues. The production favours the sound of the Indian instruments, and the couple of instrumentals using those instruments sound fantastic.
On the whole, one of the best albums I've heard for some time. I can see I'll be enjoying this one for years to come.
Love it and Love Harry Manx.......2007-01-10
I love this CD, I love Harry Manx, he is so blusey and his voice and music is undescrible, I recommend this CD for every blues lover and sitar music lover. Highly recommended.
exotic, yet strangely timeless.......2006-05-17
While most musicians are content to work within the accepted boundaries of their chosen style, lap-slide guitarist Harry Manx likes to color way outside the lines. His crayons? Soulful, raspy vocals, poetic lyrics, and the whining drones and mysterious melisma of Indian music. In addition to picking Hawaiian-style flat-top à la David Lindley, Ben Harper, or Kelly Joe Phelps, Manx plays the mohan veena-a 20-string archtop developed by Indian slide wizard Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. East/West fusions can sometimes sound forced or awkward, but Manx-who studied with Bhatt for five years-dodges that bullet. On Mantras for Madmen, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, tamboura, tabla, and haunting female voices swirl seamlessly around intricate slide melodies, creating an exotic, yet strangely timeless sound. Drawing from blues, ragas, and the story-telling heritage of British Isles folk music, Manx conjures songs that are as bewitching as they are unique.
another level for Harry.......2006-01-20
I've been listening to Manx' blues ever since I caught him in concert here in New Mexico. "Road Ragas" being my favorite until this new release which really showcases his talent at writing songs, let alone the unique Indian instrument (I would write the name but would slaughter the spelling-a sitar/guitar cross)he plays them to. Don't let Mantra in the title sway you into thinking this is true sanskrit mantra (which I also listen to) but I think it is his way of honoring his unique East/West style and he does have a terrific sense of humor which also prevails in his songs. Good go Harry-come back to New Mexico soon!
