Bob Wills is the king of Western swing, a country music hall-of-famer and honky-tonk legend whose place in the country pantheon is rivaled only by Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams Sr. Starting in the '30s, Wills pioneered a new country sound that merged his Texas frontier fiddle with big band, Dixieland, and the blues, creating country swing with his band the Texas Playboys (and inspiring a young Merle Haggard and George Jones). Recent Wills compilations are uniformly strong and essential, and neatly avoid unnecessary duplication. This 1994 collection is exceptional; a fine combination of signature songs and smaller hits, it's the perfect place for new fans to introduce themselves to "Faded Love," "Waltzing in San Antone," and "I'm Dotting Each I with a Teardrop." --David Daley

Customer Reviews:
great compilation.......2005-12-13
This was my first introduction to Bob Wills music. About a year ago, I bought the CD at a store, and chose it over the others simply because of its lower cost. I enjoyed it greatly.
Later, I bought Proper Records' 4 disc set, "Take me back to Tulsa", which is great.
After being further exposed to a bit more of Wills' music, I still recommend this 24 song collection.
P.S. The first customer to review this item expressed their distaste for the hollering vocals that occur throughout the music. (This is just a distracting interruption to the players and singers that all listeners of Wills must get used to). Wills loved to hear his band, and liked to show his approval outloud.
Ah Ha! What makes Bob Holler?.......1999-05-18
Any fan of real country & western music knows the debt we all owe to Bob and the Boys. They brought so many things to the table, helped it grow from 'hick' to 'slick' in musical terms, mixing swing, blues, jazz in with traditional 'country'. And along the way, Bob hollered. Bob always gave his trademark yells as the boys did something well, put in vocal 'cuts' into the tune when it needed it...all part of what made it the Playboy Way. Western Swing without hollerin' just ain't Western Swing. It ain't bad, but it ain't the real deal. There's some classic songs included on here (we're missing some of my favorites...but 24 songs aren't enough!) and this CD is a good into to Bob and the boys. If you like this one, look over the Tiffany series. There's some gems in that collection. A gentle hint to the Milwaukee reviewer who's annoyed by 'someone' hollering in the songs...hush, child. You keep on talking that way, we're all gonna point and laugh.
Country Legend Lives On.......1998-08-13
We're lucky that a label sees the value of Bob Wills' wonderful historic contribution to country swing! He's the father and foundation, and his trademark "Ah ha!" is as much a signature to his music, and as loved by his fans, as the exquisite guitar licks. May the *truly* knowledgeable hear this great collection and know what great country swing is. This great really brings it all back home. One fault: where's Take me back to Tulsa?
what a let down.......1998-07-19
First, I like jazz. I like country swing. I heard good things about Bob Wills. The songs were good on this CD. The music was good. Themain singer was good. But, each song had some guy singing things like "ah, ha", "oh, yes" , "yes, yes" over and over and over again. It ruined each an every song. Now if they can remove that annoying voice, I would buy the CD again.

Good, but you could do better, part 2.......2000-03-04
My comments on "Bob Wills - Greatest Hits" are the same as for "Best of Bob Wills" and some of the other budget CDs. The music and performances are great, as is the remastering of the early recorded sound, but too many good pieces are missing. This is a hold-over from early CD years, before producers began to push the total playing time beyond the LP era. The 11 tracks here are great, but so are the 28 tracks on "King of Lonestar Swing" and the 20 or so tracks on "The Essential Bob Wills", both of which are only modestly more expensive. If you have a hankering to own all of the Bob Wills CDs or if you find a song here that you can't get on the more generously filled CDs, go for it. However, if this is to be your only Bob Wills CD, you could do better.

Customer Reviews:
Many of country's early big hits, hard to find and common.......2002-12-31
If you are a casual fan of vintage country music or you are a diehard collector, this compilation is a must buy for you as on 3 CDs you get, with generally excellent sound, 72 of the biggest hits on the country charts from the 1940s-1951. The price is excellent and among the more commonly available tracks such as Bouquet of Roses by Eddy Arnold, Bing & The Andrews Sisters's Pistol Packin' Mama, the Al Dexter tracks, the Hank Williams tracks, Sons of The Pioneers's Cool Water, Shame On You by Spade Cooley, etc. you will get many hard to find gems including Blues Stay Away With Me by the Owen Bradley Quintet (a #7 hit in 1950 and Owen would later become the A&R of Decca), Kenny Roberts's only 2 top 10 hits: Choc'late Ice Cream Cone and I Never See Maggie Alone, Is It Too Late Now and Bang Bang by Jimmie Davis, No Letter Today by Ted Daffan, Bill Boyd's Shame On You, and especially Life Gits Tee-jus, Don't It by Carson Robison among others. These hard to find gems and the great sound are worth the admission of this budget 3 CD set although there are no liner notes.
