These new recordings of mostly recent Gill compositions are the culmination of a project aimed at recording four distinct albums: rock, romance, vintage honky-tonk, and acoustic.
The Rockin' Record, virtually perfect from start to finish, begins with "Workin' on a Big Chill," its swampy groove straight out of John Fogerty and a showcase for Gill's guitar virtuosity--a groove he resumes on "Cowboy Up," with cameo harmonies from Gretchen Wilson. "Sweet Thing" and a duet with Rodney Crowell on "Nothin' for a Broken Heart" pulsate with Chuck Berry intensity that contrasts with the solid, '60s Memphis groove of "Bet It All on You."
The Reason Why showcases Gill's legendary ease with ballads, several of them enhanced by creative string arrangements by David Campbell (Beck's father), including "What You Don't Say" with LeAnn Rimes and "The Memory of You" with Trisha Yearwood. The stunning "Faint of Heart," a remarkably sultry jazz duet with Diana Krall, could become a standard.
Some Things Never Get Old revisits classic fiddle-steel honky-tonk, music Gill has long reverenced and referenced. "This New Heartache" is straight out of Ray Price. Gill and Patty Loveless tear up "Out of My Mind" and Allison Krauss and Dan Tyminski join in for the waltz "I Can't Let Go." "Don't Pretend with Me" honors Ernest Tubb's honky-tonk primitivism.
Little Brother, all-acoustic and often bluegrass-flavored, shines from beginning to end. Along with "Molly Brown," a stark cautionary about racial violence, Gill sings both "Cold Gray Light of Dawn" and "Give Me the Highway" with the Del McCoury Band. He and Guy Clark close it out with "Almost Home." Despite outstanding past efforts, Gill--one of the top hitmakers of the '90s--hasn't had a Top Ten single since 2000. No matter. His talents and the heart he puts into his writing, singing, and picking remain at their peak. This stellar collection proves it--four times over. --Rich Kienzle
Album Description
In an unmatched outpouring of virtuosity and energy, Vince Gill has created a 4-CD set of 43 new and original songs that MCA Records will release Oct. 17 under the title These Days. The collection is an artistic tour de force that displays Gill's mastery of lyrics and musical styles, ranging from traditional country and bluegrass to jazz and rock.
"I started looking at all these songs I had," the amiable superstar explains, "and going, `Shoot, I want to record that song, and I want to record that song.' I just kept checking with the other musicians to see if they were available. I had no deadlines, no rules or anything like that. So I just kept trying songs."
To accompany him on this ambitious undertaking, Gill turned both to artists he knew and had worked with before and to those whose music he admired at a distance. "I never try to fill up my records with famous people," Gill says. "I try to fill them up with the most talented people I can find on the face of the earth." By the time the project was completed, that group included Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Krall, Rodney Crowell, Phil Everly, the Del McCoury Band, Emmylou Harris, John Anderson, Lee Ann Womack, Jenny Gill, Amy Grant, LeAnn Rimes, Gretchen Wilson, Guy Clark, Trisha Yearwood, Bekka Bramlett, Michael McDonald, steel-guitar master Buddy Emmons and many other musical standouts.
Initially, Gill planned to pare down the songs he'd recorded to a single album. Then, in one of the studios he used, he spotted some Beatles memorabilia and recalled that the Fab Four had routinely released multiple albums within the same year.
Gill took the idea to Luke Lewis, Universal Music Group Nashville Co-Chairman, who totally supported his notion of multiple releases. In fact, Lewis came up with an even more radical strategy: he told Vince to go and record more songs that explore his passion for acoustic sounds and release a 4-CD set. And that's exactly what happened.
Gill co-produced These Days with famed keyboardist John Hobbs and sound engineering whiz Justin Niebank.

These Days ~ Vince Gill.......2007-07-07
A lot of the songs are vintage Vince Gill. His guitar playing is nothing short of spectacular. The duets are wonderful. His guest singers blend well with Vince's, oh so sweet, tenor. I love the album, but give it only four stars because so many of the songs are featured on albums I already own.
Inspired by negative reviews.......2007-05-21
Before ordering this CD set, I read most of the reviews on Amazon. A couple of them were very negative. However, I just couldn't believe in a "bad" recording session from Vince Gill. Especially with the great stars who collaborated as guests on many of the cuts.
Well, the good news is the negative reports were just wrong. I like these CD's, there are four in the box set, more every time I listen to them. An excellent product and a great addition to any music collection that loves ballads, country, bluegrass, and yes: Vince!!
These Days by Vince Gill.......2007-05-13
This item is a must buy for all Vince Gill fans. We purchased it after seeing in Vince in concert. The concert was great, but you can't have that all the time. His range as a musician is evident throughout this 4 CD set. Plus, the musicians he surrounds himself with make this a must buy.
Vince Gill - These Days.......2007-05-13
I'm a long time fan of Vince Gill but this album is his best. A must have for any Vince Gill fan!!
Simply awesome !!!.......2007-05-12
This CD set is well worth the money. Actually, it's priced very reasonable. There are alot of new songs. All 4 CD's are excellant.
Again, Vince Gill delivers !!

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
When country-rock icon Steve Earle teamed with blazing bluegrass act the Del McCoury Band, the result was more invigoratingly intense than even die-hard fans could have imagined. These energetic songs somehow sound innovative and timeless at the same time, merging the finest, first-person-narrated politico tunes of Springsteen or Dylan with the plaintive, hard-driving mountain wails of the Stanley Brothers and Bill Monroe. Whew. --Mike McGonigal
Amazon.com essential recording
Even if it does begin with a jokey incantation of the Mickey Mouse theme song ("M-I-C-K-E-Y..."), The Mountain is Steve Earle's most traditional album, pairing country rock's most notorious miscreant with the best working band in bluegrass. Earle was inspired by a chance meeting with the late bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe, and this is his self-declared stab at musical immortality. It is easy to imagine these 14 songs sounding as good 40 years from now as they do today. The mood varies widely from triple-time breakdowns to bluesy shuffles to meditative waltzes, but there's not a missed note or strained chorus anywhere. As Earle states at the outset, "If you want to be in the band, you have to put your hat on," and the one he's wearing, at least figuratively, is 10 gallon-plus. --Keith Moerer

Wonderful Surprise.......2007-01-06
I love this album. If you enjoy bluegrass this is a great album to have. It's high energy and fun to listen to. I particularly love the song with Iris Dement.
Powerful Coal Mining Songs.......2006-12-20
If you love Bluegrass, you will love Steve Earle teaming up with the Del McCoury Band on these original bluegrass songs. If you love songs about coal mining, "Harlan Man" and "The Mountain" are two of the best ever written - instant classics. A tremendous CD!
Timless.......2006-02-24
"My primary motive in writing these songs," Steve wrote in a press release for this disc, "was both selfish and ambitious--immortality. I wanted to write just one song that would be performed by at least one band at every bluegrass festival in the world long after I have followed Mr. Bill [Monroe] out of this world." The songs certainly should pass that test. The hillbilly murder ballad "Carrie Brown" is one classic; "Dixieland" is another; and the closing "Pilgrim"--which most reviewers singled out for praise--is yet another. That said, for me The Mountain peaks with "I'm Still In Love with You," a duet with Iris DeMent that sounds--like the rest of the album--that it could have been recorded 30, 40 years ago. In other words, it's timeless. "Does it show when my poor heart skips a beat each and every time we meet?" Steve sings, and then there's Iris' vocal, that Kentucky waif-like wail that's the audio equivalent of wine: The more you hear it, the more you like it.
Not bad for an album without drums.......2006-02-03
It's hard to imagine an artist slipping so seamlessly into a genre that it sounds like he created it, but Steve Earle pulls it off. I would encourage everyone to buy it despite their probable fears that it's going to be one of those unlistenable country records. It's great music, and it's very hard and gritty. The songs are top notch, and I think he wrote them all. A pretty impressive statement from Steve Earle.
Ten albums on a desert island.......2005-11-30
This is some of the best music you can get your hands on. And I don't even really like country. It's one of the ten albums I would want to have with me on a desert island.

Album Description
If Cream and Led Zeppelin were the supergroups of classic rock, New Grass Revival is the supergroup of bluegrass. Formed in 1972, NGR helped define "newgrass" by rearranging traditional bluegrass standards with electrified style. Fronted by lead singer John Cowan and featuring the virtuoso and improvisational playing of Sam Bush (mandolin) and Béla Fleck (banjo), NGR helped launch the jam-band scene long before the Bonaroo Festival. NGR disbanded in 1990, but their legacy laid the foundation for the Dave Matthews Band, Phish, Nickel Creek, and the String Cheese Incident. Includes 2 CDs, 35 tracks (7 previously unreleased)--all 24-bit digitally remastered.

Newgrass at the top.......2006-03-08
I bought this because of the unrealesed live tracks. These guys are fine players with sam bush being my favorite. So I recomend this to people who want to get to know this great band who were together for 18 years.
Career-Spanning Retrospective.......2005-11-29
With tracks from their King Records debut, their stints with Flying Fish, Rounder and Capitol, as well as previously unissued live and studio tracks, this is THE definitive anthology from one of the most influential bands of the progressive bluegrass genre.
Over the course of nearly two and a half hours of music and 35 tracks, GRASS ROOTS covers New Grass Revival's history from their 1972 debut through their 1989 New Year's Eve farewell show.
"Great Balls of Fire," the first of two tracks from their debut, is a no-holds-barred romp with Sam Bush on Mandolin and lead vocal and the banjo pyrotechnics provided by Courtney Johnson. The second track is the Leon Russell-penned "Prince of Peace."
Not only did Russell take NGR as his opening act in 1973, he let them record at his Shelter studios at the end of the tour. These three tracks from 1974 are all previously unreleased. For these sessions, NGR added a drummer which further alienated them from the bluegrass community. "Casey Jones," an instrumental, and "The Dancer" are fairly typical bluegrass numbers (except for the drums); but "Doin' My Time" with its extended instrumental breaks goes on for more than six and a half minutes. [It's easy to see where bands like the String Cheese Incident and Yonder Mountain String Band were influenced by NGR.]
By 1975's FLY THROUGH THE COUNTRY, the band's lineup solidified to include Bush, Johnson and bassist/vocalist John Cowan and guitarist Curtis Burch. This version of the band would stay in tact through their 1981 LP COMMONWEALTH.
NGR Mach II would emerge in 1983 (and stay together until the band dissolved) with Pat Flynn replacing Burch and Bela Fleck replacing Johnson. Two previously unreleased tracks from an Austin City Limits appearance, "When the Storm Is Over" and "You Don't Knock," showcase the new lineup.
"Seven By Seven," from their self-titled Capitol debut, showed the bluegrass/jazz path Fleck would latter follow with the Flecktones. "In the Middle of the Night" (from the same album) illustrated that Flynn was not only a gifted singer and guitarist, but the band's best songwriter.
Two other previously unreleased tracks are from a 1987 Austin City Limits appearance. The first is a funky version of "Revival." The other is a terrific version of "Ain't That Peculiar."
The final three unreleased tracks are from their Oakland Coliseum New Year's Eve show. They include "Do What You Gotta Do," a stunning 11-minute rendition of "Singing the Blues," and "Can't Stop Now." As the applause erupts, someone in the band responds, "Thanks so much! It's been wonderful!" It certainly has been, and this two-disc set captures many of the highlights of this amazing band. [Running time - Disc 1, 74:53; Disc-2, 74:15] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Best of New Grass Revival.......2005-08-22
This is a great album but then I've never been disappointed with any of their albums. Side one is the older songs which I love. I just wish they had included more of the songs from the "Flying Through the Country" and "When the Storm is Over" albums. But no New Grass Revival fan will be disappointed. The album cover has a lot of good history about them also.
Grass Roots: The Best of New Grass Revival (Capitol).......2005-08-03
The New Grass Revival defined what an acoustic band could be. The band defined a style of music. The New Grass Revival continues to influence acoustic music three decades after their modest beginning. Mandolinist Sam Bush along with banjoist Courtney Johnson, guitarist Curtis Burch and bassist "Ebo Walker" (Harry Shelor) began playing the "New Grass Style" in 1972. While their music evolved, the band changed personnel slightly through their history, adding John Cowan on bass in 1973. Bush and Cowan had met guitarist Pat Flynn at a festival in Colorado and jammed with him. Bush had known banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck for years. They were selected as the band's two new members in 1981.
Grass Roots is a 2 Cd set that will take you on a trip through New Grass history beginning in 1972 with a version of "Great Balls of Fire" like no other. This is a prime example of how the band revolutionized bluegrass music; no song was immune to being converted to the New Grass sound.
This collection is not just a compilation of old recordings re-released; there are a number of never released tracks. New Grass Revival ended their phenomenal run on New Years Eve, 1989 with a concert in California at the Oakland Coliseum. Their final show concluded with "Do What You Gotta Do", "Singing the Blues", and appropriately "Can't Stop Now", so ends the Grass Roots collection. As a long time fan of New Grass Revival, I wonder what was going on in the minds of Sam Bush, Pat Flynn, John Cowan and Bela Fleck as they burned down the Oakland Coliseum and rode off into the sunset.
This is a collection New Grass Revival songs that everyone who enjoys progressive bluegrass and acoustic music should own. It is an audio history of where this music we love came from, and a clue to where it's headed. Besides that, these boys rocked back then, and their music in this collection still does, ask Garth Brooks!
Rex Flottman
New material from a classic band.......2005-08-03
I've been a New Grass Revival fan since 1989. I discovered them watching a rerun of Austin City Limits. It's a real thrill to see two of the cuts from that 1987 performance on this album. But that's just the beginning for fans. This album also sports two cuts from the band's 1983 Austin City Limits performance. Other highlights are three unreleased tracks recorded for Leon Russell's Shelter Records and three unreleased cuts from the band's last gig on New Year's Eve, 1989, when they opened for the Grateful Dead in Oakland. New Grass Revival was a powerful presence live, and this album makes that case with 10 of its 38 tracks being live recordings. If you know New Grass Revival, you must hear this album. If you've missed out on one of the most exciting bands of the 70s and 80s, this album is a wonderful introduction.

It's fitting that this Charlie Poole box set comes in a beat-up cigar box. Enclosed are the stories, both in song and print, that serve to foreshadow a stereotypical hard-living country musician. Poole's tunes of gambling, girls, guns, and gin are real-world tales of a rambling drifter and fighter with a bum pickin' hand (broken on a drunken dare) and broken teeth (shot out during a run-in with the law).
The cover illustration by R. Crumb and the photos enclosed within hardly hint at Poole's being one of country music's earliest outlaws--rather, they portray him as a coiffed businessman-cum-banjo. It is in the three discs and the 35-page booklet that we begin to see a true picture of Charlie Poole. Though he didn't write the songs, he sang his rough-and-tumble life in the ones he chose: "Can I Sleep in Your Barn Tonight Mister?," "Husband and Wife Were Angry One Night," and "I'm the Man That Rode the Mule 'Round the World." These are songs of a simple and stubborn man in trying times. It's not all misery and strife though. The pure George Formby style of "Monkey on a String" hints at a lighter side. "Sunset March" (inspired by Fred van Eps's "Infanta March," also included in this set) may be the track that best gets at Poole's banjo style.
"Hellions both, the pair loved nothing more than traveling, raising Cain, playing music, and having a drink, and another tune, and another drink."
--Henry "Hank" Sapoznik on Poole and close friend Posey Wilson Rorrer (from the booklet)
|
It's not the lightning speed that the world would hear in the bluegrass greats, but a unique clawhammer arpeggio plucking style that comes across rough yet streetwise, like the player himself.
Not all the tracks in this set are performed by Poole, hence the subtitle ...and the Roots of Country Music. Also included are a couple dozen tracks recorded by Poole's mentors and contemporaries, giving excellent context to Poole's work. The term "bluegrass" was yet to be coined and the country outlaw profile was still a good 20 years away. It's surprising to learn that Charlie Poole only recorded and released records during a five-year period leading up to the hell-bent bender that led directly to his death at 39.
In terms of packaging, this box set is top-notch. The design, typography, and photographs are as genuine as the music. The booklet contains a brief introduction by Roanoke, Virginia, DJ Kinney Rorrer, whose father was close with Poole. Also included are accounts of Charlie's run-ins with hecklers, women, and the law, as well as an in-depth bio that surely contains the majority of what is known of his short life. Perhaps only Rorrer's out-of-print Rambling Blues: The Life and Songs of Charlie Poole reveals more about this grandfather of country music and godfather to country ruffians. --Peter Hilgendorf
Customer Reviews:
Historically Important and Interesting Music..........2006-06-15
Unlike other reviewers, I have no problem with the fact that many of the tracks feature Charlie Poole's contemporaries. Arguably, these serve to highlight his stylistic innovations.
However, the non-standard packaging is truly annoying. Unless they have very narrow musical interests, most people purchasing these CDs will have fairly large music collections. Although wonderfully written and informative, the way oversized booklet is doomed to be lost on a back shelf or perhaps in the dustbin of history. The oversized cardboard cigar box that replaces the standard jewel case is a cheesy gimmick that must either be enshrined or, more probably, thrown out. What you're left with is 3 CDs in paper sleeves that will become lost among your other CDs once they're no longer in the immediate rotation on your CD player. For these reasons, minus three stars from the five this compilation deserves.
Flashy.......2006-01-10
Dispite the quality look, I found this collection to be rather cheap. The CDs are packed in paper sleaves, and the cardboard "cigar box" is nothing but a gimmick. An interesting "book" is included which gives a good history.
Be warned that this is not a 3 CD collection of Charlie Poole songs, infact the second and third CD's are only about half Poole. The other half is other versions of songs covered by Poole performed by Poole's contemporaries. So what you end up paying for is someone's intellectual study into the influence of Poole, and a cardboard cigar box. The JSP box set provides much more bang for much less buck. But Atleast Sony is putting Poole's music out.
Essential for anyone into Old Time Music .......2005-11-15
This is the best collection of Charlie Poole to have. This was the product of a lot of serious research This collection was put together by a serious old time musician and historian, accompanied by extensive research into Poole's life.
Hank Sopoznick who put this together worked together with Kenny Rorrer and other descendants of the North Carolina Ramblers not only to issue this collection, but to organize a serious academic conference on Poole at UNC, to organize the republication of Rorrers book on Poole, and even to see that
Gibson would come out with a Charlie Poole memorial banjo. This collection has a lot more meaning than a bunch of the pirated collections issued with no concern for the heritage of this music.
Here, we not only have Poole's key recordings but also recordings of musicians who influenced him as well as of musicians who followed Poole's lead.
Poole's music was unique in that it was highly arranged, and showed strong influneces of ragtime and early jazz swing. While he did many traditional songs, and played square dance music in local shows, he included many songs out of the pop music of his times. He also had a unique sense of humor and fun in his times.
Poole was quite popular with the original old time music players of the late 1950s and early 1960s led by the New Lost City Ramblers who did a number of Poole songs. If you are like me, and got used to the sound of the NC Ramblers from the New Lost City Ramblers, you will find hearing the same songs by Poole much better, more swinging, and more fun.
The banjo playing here is unique and interesting. Poole plays a ragtimey finger picking style which anticipates bluegrass in its syncopation and in Poole's use of barred chords. Of course, Poole's style of banjo owed much to classic banjo, which Pool also played, whereas Bluegrass banjo played by Snuffy Jenkins and Earl Scruggs really came from North Carolina finger picking styles that descend from clawhammer.
Yet, Poole's idea of a tight band with the guitar playing runs, the banjo chording with runs, and the fiddle playing a semijazzy lead, contributes much more to the way Bluegrass bands would function. Both Poole's music and Bluegrass had in comon, a desire to take string band music to places offered by Black-influenced popular music (ragtime and classic Jazz in Poole's time, Swing in Monroe and Scruggs's time)/
Sadly, Poole's popularity among contemporary fans of old time music faded as the music became more focused on playing dance music, on fiddle and banjo tunes, and less on songs and singing. Let's hope these recordings will help bring the fun of Charlie Poole to more ears.
BAD BOY, FIRST-BORN, OF COUNTRY MUSIC.......2005-09-22
We're not talking "Dueling Banjos" here - and at times the music seems thin to the modern ear. But listen a while -- the early days of country, of minstrel singing, even the occasional awful vaudeville joke is front and center.
Very early records have been wonderfully cleaned, Charlie Poole and the Ramblers have been thoroughly researched - and packaged with like musicians in a 3 CD group that's a tribute to early country entertainment. This is for the real afficionado of the genre. You Ain't Talkin' to Me should really Talk to YOU!
Unusual approach to presentation.......2005-09-02
The first volume of this 3 disc set contains some wonderful selections. The second and third volumes perform a laudable job of attempting to present influential or similar works by other artists that were reworked by Poole. However, it takes only a few examples to realize what an exceptional innovator Poole was. I quickly lost interest in hearing the extraneous works and found myself wanting more of Poole's performances. I already have a substantial collection of music from this era and found the presentation of the Poole material to be first rate, despite my lack of enthusiasm for CDs in general. In summary, this collection is a stretch for 3 CDs and I think only the first disc is truly worth purchasing for most people.

Part of Boston's vibrant (and crowded) singer-songwriter scene, Kris Delmhorst stands out thanks to a gorgeous, tender, evocative voice and a textured and varied musical palette. She opens with a funked-up reworking of "Cluck Old Hen," complete with Beck-like banjo, followed by the bittersweet "Damn Love Song," where only acoustic guitar, cello, and accordion color in the lines behind her. "Broken White Line" is graced with delicate strains of pedal steel and mandolin, while the ominous, languid "Just What I Meant," a highlight here, crawls along with occasional bursts of cello and baritone sax. And her wounded voice on the haunting chorus of "Gave It Away" sends shivers. While Delmhorst is at her most appealing when the musical settings are ambitious, her lyrics seem to benefit from a more restrained approach. Thus, songs like "Words Fail You" and "Yellow Brick Road"--with basic musical tracks and too-clever words--fall comparatively flat. But for the most part, this is a powerful sophomore effort, one where elements of traditional roots-based folk successfully mingle with modern singer-songwriter flourishes. --Marc Greilsamer

Writing beauty.......2005-08-13
This cd has some of my favorite songs from Kris. All of the songs that made me a fan, in fact.
The writing here is eloquent and poetic. Her themes of love are carefully wrapped inside metaphors that will leave you speechless. I am so amazed at the expression these songs offer. There is an honesty here that will speak directly to your heart. Kris is a master at weaving words.
My favs from this disc: 'Damn Love Song', 'Words Fail You', 'Yellow Brick Road','Broken White Line' and 'Lullaby 101'.
If you are a fan of singer-songwriters then you will love this album.
Always in my cd player.......2003-12-27
I have owned this album for 2 years and it has never left my CD player. Now, Songs for a Hurricane joins it there. Kris Delmhorst is incredible.
I can't stop playing this beauitful CD!.......2003-07-18
Kris Delmhorst stands out from within the "Girls with Guitars" genre as a unique, multi-faceted, wonderful singer and songwriter. Her lyrics are strong and dynamic paired with a natural and lovely voice. That girl plays a ton of instruments and showcases those talents well on songs like "Mean Old Wind." My favorite is "Broken White Line" with its classic-sounding folk-rock nature, well elevated by original story-telling lyrics. Appetite and the older EPs are great; but for a full-fledged, enjoyable album, FIVE STORIES is the way to go. You'll be satisfied from start to finish, and then, like me, you'll press play again and start the whole experience over for another round!
A remarkable folk album from a budding star.......2003-07-16
My husband and I discovered Kris Delmhorst when she opened a Dar Williams show in Alexandria, Va. With her warm voice, catchy tunes and accessible lyrics, it was musical love at first site. I've since bought all her albums and am DYING for the next one to come out. My favorites on this one _ so far her best _ are "Broken White Line," and "Yellow Brick Road." She is right up there with Dar as one of my favorite artists.
Stellar project.......2002-11-01
It's impossible to go wrong buying this CD if you have any interest in singer-songwriters. I think the other reviews here already sum it up nicely, but it should be mentioned that many of the musicians on this album have been seen around Boston in their own successful projects. This includes Catie Curtis and Sean Staples of the Resophonics among many others. This album is well-played and given a sensitive treatment by capable hands. Add Kris's stellar voice and songwriting on top and you've got a great album that's difficult to remove from rotation. Buy without hesitation.

Customer Reviews:
Highly recommendable Buddy Holly tribute.......2003-10-10
To my mind Buddy Holly was the best musician of all the fifties rock n roll acts .Mind ,I say "musician" not "singer" for while a perfectly talented singer he was outclassed vocally by Presley and the Killer .However,he possessed a great deal of musical insight and applied the fruits of his wide listening to create a substantial musical legacy in a tragically brief time span .
This 1996 tribute to Holly is a labour of love and a worthwhile album in its own right .Predominantly a country music affair it gives a number of stellar performers the chance to pay tribute to a lasting influence in American musis.
It has its weaknessses -the opening track Peggy Sue Got Married ,which features Holly's own vocal grafted onto a new version by the Hollies is over arranged and for me it simply does not work .Also the take on Midnight Shift by Los Lobos is too plodding for my taste .Yet all else is fine and in some cases better than that.
The soaring version of True Love Ways by the Mavericks is passionate and beautiful;Nanci Griffith and the Crickets add something new to Well All Right make it sound well at ease in her usual "folkabilly" style;the perfect pitch of Suzy Boguss on It Doesn't Matter Anymore comes close to the original, while other highlights include a nice version of Think It over from the Tractors.
Check out the duet between Steve Earle and Marty Stuart on Crying ,Waiting ,Hoping for new insights into a Holly song,;listen to the Bo Diddly-ish attack on Not Fade Away by the Band and the Crickets but above listen to the simplest arrangement of all on the most affecting track of the lot-the reflective take on Learning the Game by the great Waylon Jennings. With a simple guitar accompaniment he cuts to the heart of the song bringing the gravitas of the years to the deceptively simple song .Its called experience and its priceless.
This does not Buddy down even when adhering closely to the original arrangement as in the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band cut of Maybe Baby
A pleasing album.
Buddy will never fade away.......2003-03-21
Sixties group The Hollies named themselves after him and they open this set with a remix of Buddy's original version of Peggy Sue got married. Modern recording technology is amazing, but I admit that I would have preferred the Hollies to do their own version rather than mix their vocals with Buddy's.
The remaining recordings were all (as far as I know) completely new for this album and feature a mix of rock and country performers. Buddy's former band, The Crickets, lend their support to Nanci Griffith on Well all right and to The Band on Not fade away.
My favorite track here is It doesn't matter anymore, featuring outstanding guitar picking by Dave Edmunds and brilliant singing by Suzy Bogguss. Actually, I think all the tracks are great, except Peggy Sue got married which is merely OK. You have to like both country and rock music to agree with me. If you only like one of these genres, you may only like some of the tracks here.
Despite a recording career cut short by death, Buddy's influence on pop, rock and country music is substantial. This is a fitting tribute album, although it would have been nice to have more than twelve tracks.
Great Memories of Holly.......2002-10-03
Holly may have died before his time but his music lives on and thanks to Waylon and Mark Knopfler, this album will always be one of my favorites.
Buddy Holly still lives........2002-07-07
Buddy Holly's career only lasted a couple of years and he was only 21 or so when he was killed. Thus, it's astonishing that we are still listening to his music forty-plus years later. Holly's music was innovative. Modern groups use dozens of musicians to produce sounds not as original as Holly did with a four piece band.
This is a good tribute album. The best version of a Holly song here is "Midnight Shift" by Los Lobos, a hard-rocking, smoky, mysterious tune. I don't know the song in the original Holly version. Also good are "Maybe Baby" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and "Not Fade Away" by the Band and the Crickets. The mix of Buddy Holly's voice with a new background and the Hollies on "Peggy Sue Got Married" is also kind of cool. But where is Holly's most famous song, "Peggy Sue" with its absolutely unique, unforgettable, machine gun rhythm?
I suspect we'll still be listening to Buddy Holly in 2050 and new interpretations of his songs will appear every decade or so. He's one of the best from the early days of rock and roll.
Worth the price, nice interpretations of Holly"s songs.......2000-11-01
This disc is a nice tribute to the music of Buddy. Two tracks stand out for me, Cryin, Waitin, Hopin by Earle and Stuart. Its raw, gut bucket music. The Ely-Snider version of Oh Boy! is the best cover, including Doug Sahms' version, contained in "Live Texas Tornado" I have heard. The guitar and bass work is thundering. These boys did Holly right. The rest of the cd is nice and was done with great respect for Holly. All except the Hollies watered down version of Peggy Sue Got Married.
All in all a solid cd for the collection.

Customer Reviews:

Great!.......2005-06-20
I've Always Been Crazy is really a great tribute to Waylon Jennings. one of the best CW singers ever.
It is worth it just to hear 'Lonesome, On'ry and Mean' by the legendary Travis Tritt.
Good stuff!.......2005-02-10
Overall, it's a great album. Some of the songs are done much the way they were by Waylon himself, and some have a very modern spin put on them. I appreciated the artist's interpretations and especially loved Kenny Chesney/Kid Rock's version of "Luckenbach, Texas" and the girls singling "mamas". A few of the songs don't even sound like the orig. and definitely don't sound country...so if that bugs you, you may not want to buy this album.
ok, but could have been better".......2005-01-27
this tribute album is ok, there is some good tunes on here, but nothing as good as it need'ed to be after all waylon is the king of the outlaws' its a' should've could've kinda thing if you know what i mean? but i really do like travis tritt's version of lonesome onry and mean. he is alot like waylon was. the outlaw son of waylon so to speak. and then there is other great songs on here too. but that one stands out in my mind. yes the other tribute album is much better. man its time another one comes out, but hopefuly this time they will all do the songs they want to. a waylon fan.
great songs, great performances, but overproduced.......2004-10-25
waylon jennings wrote great songs and the performances on this tribute album all seem heartfelt and energetic. in particular, i liked the performances by ben harper, hank williams jr., and john mellencamp. If you like waylon jennings you should like most of this album. unfortunately, many of the recordings are way too nashville-slick (see travis tritt...) and this diminishes them and will be annoying to many waylon fans.
Fabulous Tribute.......2004-02-12
That pretty much sums it up! It is wonderful. Stargunn is awesome. I'd never heard of them before this tribute album to Waylon, but they are terrific. Alison Krauss (You Asked Me To) is incredible, as always. Dwight Yoakam (Stop the World) has a lot of heart - just as Lukenback, Texas (Kenny Chesney and Kid Rock)! A must have for your Waylon Collection! (The Dream by Waylon is beautiful)! Must Check this Album Out!!!
