From Amazon.co.uk
Less than two years after the death of her mentor, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris recorded her first album for Reprise. Pieces of the Sky inaugurated a suite of four mid-'70s albums and a surprising number of hits: her sound was clearly traditional, but also tastefully up-to-date with folk-rock and singer/songwriter styles, and her crystalline, febrile vocals took standards such as "Love Hurts" and "If I Could Only Win Your Love" back up the charts. This compilation brings together her biggest hits, and shows why Harris is important and why she continues to make adventurous country music. Through unfailingly tasteful song selection, brilliant occasional songwriting, and her cool, velvety soprano, Harris extended Gram Parsons's vision of "cosmic American music" and made it her own. --Roy Kasten
Album Description
Masterful at rock, country, folk, bluegrass, and more, Emmylou Harris is one of the most distinctive and visionary voices in contemporary music. The artist's lucid, achingly gorgeous vocals and a string of celebrated albums-many featuring her acclaimed "Hot Band"-have earned Harris eleven Grammys and made this alt-country/roots-rock innovator a legend in her own time.
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT!.......2007-06-14
I thoroughly enjoy every song on this CD, and listen to it often.
Add this to your collection!.......2007-01-13
I originally bought this CD for 1 or 2 songs. I saw her perform with Elvis Costello singing "Love Hurts" and I thought it was fantastic. I was disappointed when I couldn't find this duo singing; but, decided to purchase this CD. It really is very good. I am amazed by her talent.
Another vote for Emmylou's voice...........2006-08-25
I definitely agree, that listening to the best of this CD, is pure heaven...and to my ears, if you buy this beautiful album, just enable the following cuts and listen to them over.....and over...that's heaven....
Boulder to Birmingham
Pancho and Lefty
To Know Him is to Love Him
Orphan Girl
Michaelangelo
The Connection
Of course, if you buy this CD, you will probably have some different cuts that you also love. Emmylou Harris, we all love you and your voice, and your music...
Heavenly Heartaches & Highways...
To touch the heart........2006-07-18
The fact that Emmylou Harris is breathtakingly beautiful distracts only very slightly from her amazing grace as a singer. She is truly touched and truly moving.
One fault---this needed to be a two-disk set!.......2006-05-30
Otherwise, it's wonderful. Really does span the years, but I think there are some places where more emphasis is needed and would have preferred to see a second disk to do it.

While "progressive bluegrass" might sound like an oxymoron, it's a good description of this dynamic acoustic trio's approach. Fans of traditional string-band music might flinch at Nickel Creek's experimentation, but there is little doubt that the threesome has attracted the largest crossover audience to the genre since Jerry Garcia. Still, the rigors of working together since they were teens have prompted an open-ended sabbatical at the end of their 2007 tour. Cue the Christmas 2006 hits package--it's the perfect time to cash in on the catalog with the band still hot as an active unit. Since Nickel Creek has recorded just three albums for Sugar Hill, it does seem a bit premature for this recap. But the label has done an admirable job by adding a bonus DVD of the act's seven videos and arranging the audio tracks in non-chronological order to enhance the flow. If anyone had any doubts that these youngsters were the future of bluegrass, Reasons Why should erase them. They never let their instrumental virtuosity on guitar, fiddle, and mandolin get in the way of writing terrific material such as "When in Rome"--a should-have-been hit on the order of R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion"--and they also deliver the goods in concert. A nine-minute live version of "The Fox"--one of two previously unreleased performances that close this collection--proves they can mash up Bach, Bill Monroe, and Dylan with such cool aplomb, one can only imagine what the future holds. Until then, we have this compact reminder of Nickel Creek's strengths and potential--a superb collection that is as classy and challenging as the group itself, and leaves the listener wanting more. --Hal Horowitz

defective.......2007-06-13
This cd was defective. It was suppossed to have two cds but only one works and the other one is blank.
I have a very busy work schedule and it is a real hassle for me to take the time to return it so I have not even started the process.
This is why I hesitate to buy online for this very reason.
Not Your Average Bluegrass.......2007-06-03
My wife found this group when she came across their song Robin & Marion. We fell in love with the music immediately. This is not you father's bluegrass band. They seem to draw from a myriad of influences and styles: a blend of bluegrass, Irish folk, DMB, and even some 60's American folk (think Simon and Garfunkel).
This particular collection, selected from all of their releases, is wonderful and serves as a good introduction to the trio and their music. The DVD portion of this only covers their music videos and I truly think they shine best in their live performances. I would have liked to have seen one or two of those included.
Great overview.......2007-05-26
This CD/DVD set is the final chapter overview for Nickel Creek. Its members are now young adults. Of the 3, no doubt Chris Thile will forge a career, if he chooses, that will be as memorable as some of his mentors, viz Mike Marshall and Mark O'Connor.
This set is a great taste of a wonderful collective. God bless them all in future: good music, good souls and wonderful musical fellowship.
Nickel Creek - Videos Question.........2007-03-24
Nice 2 disk set but did anyone notice in the credits for the video disk that it lists 8 videos - Ode to a Butterfly seems to be missing...What happened ?
Truth in the Title.......2007-02-24
This is a solid CD with The Very Best Nickel Creek offers. The tracks show great variety yet still mesh together well. The blue-grass sound is great for relaxing to yet is upbeat enough that it will keep you entertained. Great CD and I recommend it to all!

From Amazon.co.uk
After immeasurable success in the U.S., Faith Hill finally comes to Europe, and There You'll Be is a sort of catch-up for the best bits we may have missed along the way (or, in other words, a greatest hits collection for the uninitiated). A dozen songs which map the path of the Georgia singer, it includes the massive hit for which she has come to be known over here--"There You'll Be," from the Pearl Harbor soundtrack--together with some pop anthems like "The Way You Love Me (Love to Infinity Mix)." However, the style she delivers most convincingly is that of her roots in country, with "Let Me Let Go", "Piece of My Heart," and "You Give Me Love" from the earlier albums being the clear highlights of this collection. --Gunther Matejka

Not Good Enough.......2007-04-07
I write this knowing how much I love to hear Faith Hill sing , and knowing how much of her Music that I own , and have listened to over the
years , this supposed to be Greatest Hits Ablum that leaves out some of her Hits ,adds these New Songs does away with what the Album is Called , and suppose to be , "The Best OF Faith Hill" , I DON'T THINK SO!
Just the good stuff.......2007-03-09
I am not a huge country western fan, but there are certain artists I really like. I like when an artist comes out with a greatest hits CD that really is filled with greastest hits. If you are a Faith Hill fan, but want to buy just one CD, then buy this one.
Very Disappointed.......2007-03-08
Thought it would be a greatest hits CD of all her original music. Would not have purchased if I had heard CD before I ordered it.
Great Compilation.......2006-11-12
This import CD by Faith Hill is a great compilation of her hits, it also includes never before released songs such as "over the rainbow" which she performs with great diversity. Although a little pricy, well worth the money for true Faith Hill fans.
Sounds Good but It is miss something!.......2006-09-16
This cd sounds good but it is missing some of her best songs! 'It Matters To Me' is my fav and it is not to be found on Faith Hill's Best of! She has some good ones with Tim McGraw also not on this cd! So I would wait!!!!!!!!

great anniversary present. fav song... I love the way you love me... my husband loves to listen to it in the car.
Great Country Music Videos.......2003-11-01
This is wonderful music with great music videos.
I would love to rate it higher ...........2003-10-31
Next to George Strait, John Micheal Montgomery is my favorite country singer and I always look forward to when he releases a new cd. However, I wonder what he and/or his management were thinking when they decided on the songs for this cd.
This is nothing more than the "Greatest Hits" cd with a few different songs. In fact, 11 of the 20 songs on this cd were also on that cd despite the fact that he has cut four studio cds since then. I do see that "Long As I Live" is included on this collection but it should have been on the first one to begin with.
I know that JMM made his career out of singing those great country love songs however, he does have some great up-tempo songs as well. I noticed that many are missing not only from this cd but from "Greatest Hits" as well. Where is "Just Like A Rodeo", "A Few Cents Short", and "Love Working On You"? How about "Hello L-0-V-E", "That's What I Like About You" and "Four-Wheel Drive"?
Of course, I also notice several great love songs are missing as well that could have been on this cd. Songs such as "I Couldn't Dream", "Even Then", "Sinkin' In", and "Pictures". I think those songs as well as the ones I mentioned above would have been better for this cd.
As for the two new songs, I can take it or leave it with the walz-tempo tale song "Cool", it did not knock me over. However, "One Day Less" is yet another very strong JMM love song along the lines of "I Swear" and "I Love The Way You Love Me". I could see this one being played at weddings.
In summary, This is a great cd to pick up if you do not already own any of his prior cds. Otherwise, I would not bother with it.
More Tracks But Less Satisfying Than His Prior Greatest Hits.......2003-09-12
From his debut hit "Life's A Dance" in late 1992 through the rest of the '90s, John Michael Montgomery (with his easy going baritone) was one of country music's most reliable hitmakers. Over the past four years, however, he's had but one top ten hit, the chart topping heart tugger "The Little Girl." With his recent singles struggling, a hits collection was the logical choice for Montgomery's next release. A sequel to 1997's GREATEST HITS made the most sense, as Montgomery has ten top 20 hits not included on that first set. Instead, Warner Brothers went with this career encompassing VERY BEST OF that contains 11 of the 14 recordings already found on the strong selling GREATEST HITS.
Among the hits not included on either collection are the engaging "Ain't Got Nothin' On Us," "Love Working On You," and "Hello L.O.V.E." All are uptempo romps that would have contributed nicely to the ballad-heavy VERY BEST OF. The sequencing on VERY BEST OF distorts the musical nonbalance even more, with three fast tunes leading off, followed by a slew of slow stuff. The collection concludes with two new ballads: the paternal reflection "Cool" and the pledge of devotion "One Day Less." While pleasant, neither track seems likely to reverse Montgomery's recent chart struggles. Ultimately, while it contains more tracks and covers a longer period of Montgomery's recording career, this VERY BEST OF is not as enjoyable to listen to as his earlier GREATEST HITS.
Generous collection of commercial honky tonk and ballads.......2003-09-10
The son of a Kentucky musician whose own Nashville dreams never came true, John Michael Montgomery kept a bit of his daddy's hometown grit, even as he put together an impressive string of Nashville-produced hit albums and singles. This generous compilation offers twenty tracks, and collects nearly every significant hit single that Montgomery's had in his twelve year recording career.
Montgomery's first hits, the ballads "Life's a Dance" and "I Love the Way You Love Me," had a middle-of-the-road sweetness that hit an emotional chord with both record buyers and award givers -- the second single was the ACM song-of-the-year for 1993. The love songs continued in 1994 with, "I Swear," as did the awards (ACM song-of-the-year and single-of-the-year). As with most of Montgomery's ballads, the country flavor is to be found almost entirely in his vocals. There's a hint of steel, but the drums-guitars-bass-keyboard backing could just as easily host a pop vocalist (in fact, the song was covered by the R&B group All-4-One and netted a grammy). It's the slight edge in Montgomery's voice, the phrasings, and the down-home sentimentality of the lyrics that brings his slow songs into the country arena.
Later in 1994 his singles began to capitalize on Montgomery's uptempo numbers, charting with the rowdy country-rocker "Be My Baby Tonight" and the mid-tempo "If You've Got Love." Both tracks kick up the twangy guitars and fiddle of a honky-tonk bred backing. His releases continued mix ballads and up-tempo tunes, including the lightning-quick auctioneer's cadence of "Sold (The Grundy Country Auction Incident)" and the contemplation of his father's death, "I Miss You a Little." The latter, unfortunately, is missing from this collection.
By 1996 Montgomery was mostly charting ballads, variously edging more towards the center and bringing a bigger dose of his country sound down-tempo. "Angel in My Eyes" is more contemporary pop than country, but 1998's "Cover You in Kisses" has a superb melody anchored by a strong underline of steel and fiddle. Montgomery's last #1 single, 2000's "The Little Girl" features Alison Krauss and Dan Tyminski on harmony vocals.
In addition to seven #1s (seventeen top-5s!), this collection adds "'Til Nothing Comes Between Us" from the "Pictures" album, and a pair of newly recorded tracks: the waltz-time generation gap tale "Cool," and the romantic "One Less Day." This is a terrific overview and introduction to Montgomery's hitmaking career. Though it's missing the top-5 "Cowboy Love" and top-10 "I Miss You a Little," it's probably the more complete pick over his 1997 "Greatest Hits" LP.

The great irony of the Louvin Brothers, today considered by many the best of the brother duos, is that they peaked at a time when the form was almost dead. Their vocal sound was as old as the Alabama hills, and they kept alive such archaic tunes as "Knoxville Girl" and "In the Pines." Yet their studio bands were up to date, if not exactly Nashville Sound knockoffs, and much of their material, including "You're Running Wild," was fairly contemporary. Traditionalists or modernists? When it's this good, who cares? And besides, who's going to argue with guys who knew Sin the way Charlie and Ira Louvin knew Sin? --John Morthland

When I Stop Dreaming, Best of the Louvin Brothers.......2007-07-09
I saw Charlie Louvin in concert recently in San Diego. Very few in the crowd had heard him live before but all knew his reputation. He did not disapoint and made a room full of new hardcore fans. He and his late brother recorded some wonderful songs that will be evergreen much like the work of Hank Williams. When you look back at the great Brothers acts like the Stanleys, Jim and Jesse and the Delmore Brothers you know the Louvin Brothers belong on top of that elite group. Their harmony work was the best. You won't hear this great stuff on the radio anymore as Nashville has long ago turned it's back on it's roots. You gotta go dig up the really good stuff by yourself. This record is a good place to start.
THE BEST OF THE LOUVIN BROTHERS: A Review.......2007-07-03
This is a must own CD for lovers of traditional and blue grass influenced country music. The tight harmonies, beautiful melodies, and poignant stories are a real treat to listen to and enjoy.
You won't hear better country than "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby", "You're Running Wild", "My Baby's Gone", and the title song, "When I Stop Dreaming".
Indispensable for Serious C & W Collectors.......2007-03-04
Like all great musicians--whatever the music--the Louvin Brothers had a sound all their own: often imitated, never equalled. A basic album for listeners who love country and want a fuller sense of where it all began.
A good starter album from the Louvin Brothers.......2006-06-30
I read the book, "Country Conversations" by Timothy Edward Jones initially for his interview with John McCrea of Cake, who happens to be a big fan of the the Louvin Brothers since childhood. Indeed, he got Charlie Louvin to play all 16 dates on Cake's 2003 Unlimited Sunshine Tour along with Cheap Trick, the Detroit Cobras, and the Hackensaw Boys who was the backing band for Charlie Louvin.
In the 2 pg. interview with McCrea, he stated his favorite Louvin songs were "You're Learning" (an Every Brothers sound-alike) and "the Great Atomic Power", the better of the two and both on this album. Definitely a good primer of the Louvin's music!
ps--As much McCrea in that interview stated that "Louvin Brothers' covers make me nauseous," "The Great Atomic Power" deserves a makeover (a faster tempo & a fuller musical accompaniment sung by a female duo; myself as one of that duo)--
John McCrea, you have been warned!
Brilliant harmonizing.......2005-12-14
The best of the best of The Louvins, but ignore Amazon's track listing - see P.D.Harris' review for all the tracks included.
A must-have collection unless you want to invest in the multi-disc box.

Few musicians are as adept as Doc Watson is at making the remarkable seem routine. Song after song on this 23-track label retrospective demonstrates effortless flat-picking virtuosity. Listen to the fleet, precise picking on "Beaumont Rag," and you'll immediately recognize why the North Carolinian's skills are the envy of just about anyone who's ever tried to master folk guitar. Yet his plainspoken baritone vocals on "Tennessee Stud," "Shady Grove," "Little Sadie," and others speak of his devotion to his songs. Watson in his prime could play rings around just about any picker alive, but he's never gone in for hollow showboating. Culled from six of the nine albums Watson recorded for Vanguard between 1964 and 1971 (though the most recent inclusions here are from 1968), this album is a condensed alternative to the four-disc Vanguard Years box set. Four previously unreleased tunes add to the value of this worthy intro to an American master. --Steven Stolder

Classic Songs Performed By One Of The Greats Of American Music.......2006-02-23
After being born blind in a small mountain town in North Carolina, Doc grew up playing guitar with local musicians. But it wasn't until 1960, at age 37, that Doc was "discovered" by folk music archivist, Ralph Rinzler and brought to play in New York City. Doc became a popular figure in the folk music scene of the early 60's and his legend has grown ever since. I used to go see him play at a small club in Black Mountain, North Carolina when I was attending a nearby school, Warren Wilson College, in the late 1980's.
This album is a treasure trove of American folk classics with Doc's distinctive voice and hot picking making for a beautiful and inimitable sound. A close listening to the words of these songs will show just how rich, profound and meaningful they truly are. There is none of the "corniness" often associated with some of the more commercialized folk music. But instead Doc belts out powerful tales of murder and mayhem, wild women and rebellious "rounders" off to get drunk and raise hell. Some of these songs almost remind me of Old Testament stories in their ability to use dark and sometimes lurid subject matter to convey the true meaning of the human condition. Of course, you also have straightforward gospel songs like "Down In The Valley To Pray" which offer redemption to all of us wayward sinners. All in all this is a beautiful record of extraordinary songs by one of the masters of American music - the great Doc Watson.
The Best of Doc Watson.......2006-01-29
Doc Watson is one amazing guitar picker, human being, and musician. I`ve been a fan of his for more than forty years.
Doc Watson Is a National Treasure.......2005-06-22
Arthel "Doc" Watson is perhaps the finest flatpick guitar player to ever pick up a guitar and this generous 23-track anthology goes a long way to support that claim. All tracks are taken from the six studio albums he recorded for Vanguard from 1964 through 1968.
I first heard Doc Watson on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN where he performed his signature song "Tennessee Stud," included here from his classic SOUTHBOUND album. While not as good a singer as he is a guitar player, there is an earthy quality to his vocals, which is especially effective on the a capella gospel number "Down in the Valley To Pray."
On many of these tracks, Watson is accompanied by his son Merle on second guitar. Listen to their delicate interplay on the instrumental "Dill Pickle Rag."
As an added bonus, the final four tracks are previously unreleased. First, is a solo performance of "Grandfather's Clock" with Watson accompanying himself on guitar and harmonica. Next is the Carter Family's tragic tale of "The Cyclone of Ryecov." Then there is the brief (1:23) guitar workout "Doc's Guitar." The final is the traditional "Crawdad Hole" performed live.
Doc Watson is one of our national treasures, and if you're looking for a solid introduction to his music, this is an excellent place to start. [Running Time - 65:55] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Doc Watson is a fast guitar picker and bluegrass innovator!.......2001-03-08
As an impressionable teenager in the mid 1960s, I was one of the youngest members of the Seattle Folklore Society (the folks who later started the Northwest Folklife Festival). In those early days, they would rent small halls and bring in old black blues musicians like Rev. Gary Davis, Mance Lipscomb and Jesse Fuller, and relatively unknown folk musicians like Buffy Sainte Marie and Doc Watson.
Watson is an incredibly talented blind guitar and banjo picker from the Blue Ridge Mountains with a resonant voice. The night I saw Doc Watson, he was ushered to a lone chair at the center of a small stage, and within one or two songs, I felt like I was sitting at his kitchen table, as he sang songs from the mountains of North Carolina with a decidedly bluegrass flavor. At the time, I just knew he was one of the fastest flat-picking and fingerpicking guitarists around, who held the respect of anyone who had taken up the instrument in the Sixties.
What I didn't know then was that Watson is largely responsible for shifting bluegrass guitar from a supportive rhythm guitar role (so that fiddlers and banjo pickers could shine) to playing leads, which is standard practice these days.
Vanguard Records, the company that released these original 1960s era recordings, came out with this "Best of" album in the late 1990s, with over 65 minutes of tunes, many of which have become standards by other artists, like "Rising Sun Blues" (known to most of us as "The House of the Rising Sun," although with a different tune), "Tennessee Stud" (a great horse song), "Down in the Valley To Pray" (an inspiring white spiritual), "Tom Dooley" (quite different from the Kingston Trio version), "Alberta" (about a girl, not a province in Canada), "Black Mountain Rag" (still one of my favorite bluegrass guitar instrumentals, "Grandfather's Clock" ("...it stopped short, never to go again when the old man died"), "Doc's Guitar" (if only I could play half that fast), and "Crawdad Hole."
While a few cuts on this album are done with a bluegrass band, on most he is alone, or with one other guitarist (including his late son, Merle). On these more intimate cuts it still feels like he's sitting at his kitchen table playing just for me (or you, if you get this CD). If you like bluegrass, or simply some of the best acoustic guitar ever recorded, this is highly recommended!
Doc Watson - A musician's musician.......2000-10-07
As a bluegrass musician myself, as well as a choral singer my tastes range from Baroque to Folk and classic Rock. In that wide disparity, if I had to count the five finest musicians I know, Doc would be a must in the group. Real musicians love fine music, regardless of the genre, and Doc's clean, crisp delivery - both vocal and (of course, mainly) playing is literally without peer. Doc's finest are so enjoyable that I can listen to them over and over. I never hesitate to 'turn on' another music lover to Doc; indeed I spent a pleasant half hour one day introducing Maestro Leroy Kromm, director of the San Jose Symphonic Choir, to Doc's fine work. Leroy agreed with me that here was a pearl among masters.

As further proof that the virtuosity of Jerry Douglas knows no categorical bounds, the biggest surprise on his predominantly instrumental The Best Kept Secret is a revival of the disco-era smash "Back in Love Again," with Alison Krauss supplying as much vocal funk as she can muster. The undisputed master of the shimmering Dobro (and a featured member of Krauss's band Union Station), Douglas also applies his artistry to the jazzy atmospherics of Weather Report's "A Remark You Made," pays homage to Celtic fiddler Aly Bain on the reflective "Sir Aly B," trades licks with guitarist Bill Frisell on the twangy "Lil' Ro Ro," and enlists John Fogerty for guest vocals on "Swing Blues #1." The album additionally showcases Douglas on lap steel, with guitarist Derek Trucks providing rock propulsion on the opening "She Makes Me Want to Sing." A breakdown with banjoist Béla Fleck and mandolinist Sam Bush on "Who's Your Uncle?" finds Douglas on more familiar turf at his bluegrass best. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Not what you'd think.......2007-06-13
I've heard Douglas on various records and liked him quite a bit -- but most of his work has been in the narrow field of bluegrass. I didn't run out to buy this because I saw Sam Bush, Allison Krause and Bela Fleck were on it and thought it'd be another bluegrass mainstream record.
It is not. This is a fusion session; and while it pushes too hard at some points to be one (the version of "A Remark you Made" a classic of
the fusion repetoire, is a good but not great moment) it succeeds completely in others.
"She Makes Me Want to Sing" is a classic of tight fitting rock with a sort of Alabama-Allman Brothers flavor -- but what it reminds me of most is early Quicksilver Messenger Service or possibly the Grateful Dead from before Live/Dead. It is energetic, expressive, tight, and it rocks.
"The Best Kept Secret" opens similarly, but goes off into a Zawinul-influenced meditation before coming back to its roots. At moments it reminds me of Miles Davis, post 'Kind of Blue' but with railroad songs at the root instead of soul riffs.
"Lil' Roro" is a roots rocker with country blues as the taproot. "Swing Blues" is well described elsewhere, but it's also not bluegrass. "Ya Ya etc. is more like Bela Fleck when he's NOT being a bluegrass musician,
i.e., UFO-TOFU style.

King of the Dobro.......2007-01-13
If you want to hear the music of the hottest dobro player on the planet, then this CD is for you.
Jerry Douglas brings his high energy, bluegrass-influenced, impeccably tasteful style to this, his latest CD, and God bless him for it.
Special surprise--Gabe Witcher, virtuoso fiddler--plays with Jerry on a song that Gabe wrote, "Snow's First Fall," a delicate melodic piece to balance some of the more hard-driving pieces on the CD.
