Editorial Reviews
From the Artist
When the best Bluegrass musicians pick up their instruments and gather around a microphone, the result is pure magic. No slick production or overdubs to hide behind, the most talented players in Bluegrass offer an honest and refreshing musical experience. The ensemble sound of banjo, mandolin, guitar, fiddle, double bass and soaring vocal harmonies provide the foundation on which these 20th Century Bluegrass Masters seem to effortlessly create their musical art.

Not the kind of Country I like.......2007-05-14
I bought this CD for one song I heard and saw Vince Gill interprete
on the fantastic Grand Ole Opry at Carnegie Hall DVD. This bluesy song
called "If You Ever Have Forever In Mind" seemed the "utmost" to me
with a Ray Charles touch. For that reason I wanted a CD where this song
was on. However the rest of the songs are like most country songs since
the early 90's: it ain't country, it's POP except for another two fine
songs and that's the reason why I finally give it 3 stars.

Amazon.com essential recording
Fresh off their pioneering stint with Bill Monroe, guitarist-vocalist Lester Flatt and banjo master Earl Scruggs waxed 28 seminal cuts for Mercury between 1948 and 1950. All 28 appeared on the Complete Mercury Sessions, which has been replaced by this far-less-generous 12-song collection. Still, the duo and their Foggy Mountain Boys attack this music with an urgency that even Monroe's Blue Grass Boys were hard-pressed to equal. Scruggs's three-fingered banjo technique is as important to bluegrass as any other innovation, possessing a rolling quality that keeps the songs moving. "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" and "Farewell Blues" are banjo tour de forces that will never be matched. Original gospel numbers find Scruggs applying his fingerpicking technique to guitar, à la Merle Travis, and feature sharp group harmonies. Most of the original secular songs have become bluegrass standards, even though the pair refused to call their refined mountain music bluegrass. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Best of Flat & Scruggs.......2007-01-16
If you are already a fan of Bluegrass, you probably don't need this review as you know these guys are amazing and you have most of these recordings somewhere else. If you are just getting started appreciating the music, this is a great cd to get. It has a good range of music and *all* pieces are absolutely stellar!
I got this for my kids as I know the material is good and they just love the positive energy of the music. "Flat & Scruggs", "Bill Monroe", "Old and In The Way", and Springsteen's "Seeger Sessions" are all big favorites in my house.
Classic Flatt & Scruggs.......2002-02-10
Even if you're only a casual fan of bluegrass music, this is essential listening. After playing their last dates with Bill Monroe in early 1948, Flatt and Scruggs began a two-year relationship with the independent Mercury Records. Between October, 1948 and October, 1950, they recorded 28 tracks over four separate sessions. The twelve tracks presented here include such originals as "My Cabin in Caroline," "We'll Meet Again Sweetheart" and the banjo showcase "Foggy Mountain Breakdown"--all of which have become classics. Unfortunately, this disc omits other originals like "Down the Road," "So Happy I'll Be," "I'll Never Love Another" and "Is It Too Late Now," among others. [1992's "The Complete Mercury Sessions" included their entire recorded output for the label, but it has since gone out of print.] The Foggy Mountain Boys at various times included guitarist Mac Wiseman, mandolinist Curly Seckler and former Monroe sidemen bassist Cedrick Rainwater and fiddler Art Wooten. Unlike on their recordings with Monroe, Scruggs' innovative three-finger style picking was pushed to the forefront on these recordings. In addition to being a stellar banjo player, Scruggs was a gifted guitar player as well. Listen to his Merle Travis-inspired playing on "God Loves His Children," for example. While Flatt and Scruggs would have greater commercial success after their switch to Columbia, these are essential recordings. And unless you want to shell out some big bucks for the Bear Family box sets, this--for now--is the disc to own. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

The best Bill Monroe CD ever with his F-Style Mandolin!!!.......2003-01-08
That's probably the only CD I like, I guess or I might like other ones, never know.
Well, I like this one called "The Best of Bill Monroe" & he plays an F-Style Mandolin with the fancier scroll & he wears a cowboy hat.
Bill Monroe is a bluegrass mandolin player & I like him.
This is Bill Monroe's Greatest Hits CD saying "The Best of Bill Monroe".
The songs I like are:
1. Blue Moon of Kentucky
2. Footprints in the snow
4. Uncle Pen
5. In the pines
6. I'm working on a building
7. Gotta Travel on
8. Scotland
10. I'm Sitting on top of the world &
12. My Sweet Blue-Eyed Darlin' (with Ricky Skaggs)
Ricky Skaggs sings with Bill Monroe on song 12.
I hope everybody likes Bill Monroe & his mandolin picking?
I enjoyed it.
I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Classics.......2002-04-05
These are classic songs. This is a great album to help anyone appreciate musical history, and a great introduction to blugrass music. It's not as rich sounding as modern bluegrass recordings, but it has a nice feel to it. It has a similar feel/sound to '30s Bob Wills.
Every track a gem.......2000-08-02
If you're already a Bill Monroe afficianado, then chances are you aren't looking for collections like this one (unless you want to take advantage of the clear sound resulting from the remastering on this disc -- not a bad reason to acquire this disc even if you already have all the tracks on it from other collections), but rather hunting down obscure recordings and rare tracks wherever you can find them, so I'll gear my remarks here towards the Bill Monroe neophyte. This collection is an excellent starting point, since every track on it is a gem. Bill Monroe is universally acknowledged as the father of bluegrass (which proposition is an understatement; he is also its grandfather, midwife, crazy uncle, and country cousin) and this collection lays out the reason why -- so if you don't like these songs, bluegrass ain't fer you. The version of Mule Skinner Blues on this track, something of a signature song for ol' Bill, has some of his best yodeling (if you can't like that track then _music_ ain't fer you); Uncle Pen is a real foot-stomper; these versions of the old traditionals I'm Working on a Building and I'm Sitting on Top of the World belong in every folk collection; and you won't find a better version of My Sweet Blue Eyed Darlin' anywhere else either.
Bill Monroe - High (Lonesome) Art.......2000-06-15
Listen to Mr. Monroe attack the vocal as the band comes out of the first instrumental break on "Footprints In The Snow" - the clarity, the energy, the staggering mastery and the resulting sense of joyous freedom, and you'll wonder for a brief second how anyone else would dare call themselves a singer of songs. This collection is where the old wierd America (to paraphrase Greil Marcus) meets the last exhalations of the Jazz Age. A rare synthesis of post WWII bouancy and hard scrabble life in green, remote hills. Amazing.

Weighing in at a mere 12 tracks, this is a slight, yet still quite sizzling budget-line introduction to one of the greatest bluegrass acts of all time. If you just want to get your feet wet, then this sampling of their mid-'50s work on the Mercury label is a fine place to start.

Too short, but still pretty good........2002-07-26
A quick glance at the huge back catalog of fab bluegrass owned by the Universal corporation (which includes MCA-Decca, among other labels). As with many MCA-Universal reissues, this disc is a bit too short (only 12 tracks), but it's still full of good music, and could serve as an adequate introduction to the genre. The musicians range from old-schoolers Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs and the Stanley Brothers to young 'uns like Ricky Skaggs and Vince Gill. Also nice to see the Osbourne Brothers and the Stoneman family getting their propers. Good for anyone curious about this music, but a longer, more in-depth collection woudl also be nice..
